Mitski Miyawaki is a disruptive force in indie rock. Her guarded yet supremely forthright lyrical style is arresting; as many tracks end with question marks as those with firm declarations. Mitski takes an inventive approach to lo-fi; rather than fuzz out or tone down mistakes, she dons the slimmer production to enhance its emotion. Her album “Bury Me at Makeout Creek” is a highly impressive release from a songwriter who has just begun turning heads.

How am I just now discovering Mitski? She’s the greatest rock artist in years. Fascinating use of time signatures as tonalities. Makes me wanna cut my music career short: “Everything’s said that can be said.”
@enschwartz
Жыл бұрын
can you explain "time signatures as tonalities"? I want to learn more!
@themelodicduo7759
2 ай бұрын
@@enschwartz im not 100% what they mean but what im assuming what they mean is that 4/4 is a basic beat, most common one, but time signatures like 5/4 and 7/8 feel incomplete, because its just one more than 4 or one less than 8. they leaving a feeling of wanting or like something is missing, which is a common theme in her music of course. 6/8 and 3/4 feel waltzing or swaying and so they're usually used in a more romantic connotation. that's what I assume this commenter meant. lmk if you want me to elaborate more! :)
this performance of Pearl Diver kills me every single time. it's so powerful, the breath control is on point, and the fact she can sing so perfectly and with such emotion WHILE playing the piano is mindblowing. the talent is over the roof, the purposeful voice cracks are really well placed; they add more emotion to the song. anyways i could talk about it for hours. astonishing talent

It’s kinda weird for me to listen last words of a shooting star. It was the last song I heard when i tried to unalive myself some months ago. Im doing better now but, its like, a soft, sweet and bitter feeling. Bc its a beautiful song but the lyrics describe exactly what I felt. Everything was so dark and gray and numb and umbearably painful. I mean now Im on meds and things changed but I can’t believe that I went thru all of that and im still alive. Im still breathing. Im still here. This was one of the worst years of my life but somehow I found some kind of therapy in mitski’ songs.

mitski performing live is something so personal to me
bag of bones, last words of a shooting stars, door, francis forever, etc. are my favs. I love all of her albums!
That's so real. I have hid the fact I want to be a performing artists/actor my entire life...I am a private person. The art is what I want to share , how I want to connect. That is it. I feel her in the sense. If i saw you Mitski, I may nod , say hello but scurry away as I'd like others to do. I appreciate the realness of her/you so very much .
that bit where she talks about how she's secretly a masochist who seeks opportunities to mess up in front of people really resonates now, after working for the knife. i think any artist can relate to being torn between the draw of true artistic expression and the fear of failure.

I Don't Smoke I don't smoke Except for when I'm missing you To remember your mouth, how it Tasted true And I don't smoke Except for after I've held you, baby Being with you Makes the flame burn good So if you need to be mean Be mean to me I can take it and put it inside of me If your hands need to break More than trinkets in your room You can lean on my arm As you break my heart I'm what's left of when we Swam under the moon Now the rest of my days are just Waiting for when You come down and tell me I was meant for you, baby Being with you Makes the flame burn good If you need to be mean Be mean to me I can take it and put it inside of me If your hands need to break More than trinkets in your room You can lean on my arm As you break my heart Just don't leave me alone Wondering where you are I am stronger than you give me Credit for If your hands need to break More than trinkets in your room You can lean on my arm As you break my heart Class of 2013 Mom, I'm tired Can I sleep in your house tonight? Mom, is it alright If I stay for a year or two? Mom, I'll be quiet It would be just to sleep at night And I'll leave once I figure out How to pay for my own life too Mom, would you wash my back? This once, and then we can forget And I'll leave what I'm chasing For the other girls to pursue Mom, am I still young? Can I dream for a few months more? Last Words of a Shooting Star All of this turbulence wasn't forecasted Apologies from the intercom And I am relieved that I'd left my room tidy They'll think of me kindly When they come for my things They'll never know how I'd stared at the dark in that room With no thoughts Like a blood-sniffing shark And while my dreams made music in the night Carefully I was going to live You wouldn't leave till we loved in the morning You'd learned from movies how love ought to be And you'd say you love me and look in my eyes But I know through mine you were Looking in yours And did you know the liberty bell is a replica Silently housed in its original walls And while its dreams played music in the night Quietly It was told to believe I always wanted to die clean and pretty But I'd be too busy on working days So I am relieved that the turbulence wasn't forecasted I couldn't have changed anyways I am relieved that I'd left my room tidy Goodbye Liquid Smooth I'm beautiful, I know cause it's the season But what am I to do with all this beauty? same here. she doesn’t play them live anymore though. i mean they aren’t in the laurel hell setlist.
Sometimes I wish artists didn't have to give interviews. Like they've spent months or even years trying to create something unique and special, using just the right words, just the right sounds, and then they play it for all to experience...and then they have to answer a bunch of questions about their personal life or where their inspiration comes from or what their songs are about. Like sure it might be in a way interesting to know that, but it can in no way compare to letting the art speak for itself.

@@hurricanes17 they're right though? Mitski clearly has important things to say in these interviews INCLUDING the fact that she doesn't like her previous ones, which delved way too deep into her personal life. Basically, if you actually watched the video you would realize that she wanted to do this interview, and that she wasn't forced into it at all-- she wants to be seen as a person, not some kind of weird idol that you imagine she is.
