Lyrics:
Moon, a hole of light
Through the big top tent up high
Here before and after me
Shining down on me
Moon, tell me if I could
Send up my heart to you
So when I die, which I must do
Could it shine down here with you
’Cause my love is mine all mine
I love, my my mine
Nothing in the world belongs to me
But my love, mine all mine all mine
My baby here on earth
Showed me what my heart was worth
So when it comes to be my turn
Could you shine it down here for her
’Cause my love is mine all mine
I love, my my mine
Nothing in the world belongs to me
But my love, mine all mine
Nothing in the world is mine for free
But my love, mine all mine all mine

the way the song is put together... the way the beat rolls in, the background everyone notices but doesnt pay much attention to, the occasional piano keys and the repetitive words. they just blend so nicely together and yet have this contrast. its just engineered in a way everyone feels a mild elation and are about to sob at the same time and the way it stops just before you might actually start sobbing. its the perfect masterpiece.

I had the same thought when I listened to it first time. And it hits different when you have always been a giver kind of person but in return you got nothing. So you tell yourself, to stop your heart from get corrupt that Your love is yours, whatever you gave to others don't regret it cuz that's what you are. What other people do with it doesn't matter.

thank you mitski. you’ve unknowingly saved my life when i was twelve in 2020. i was extremely suicidal at the time because of my abusive upbringing (along with the whole pandemic situation) and one of your older songs started suddenly playing in a shuffle of ‘goodbye music’ i put together that summer, since i was planning to commit beforehand. i don’t think there was much else to ease me out of it either now that i reminisce on that period of my childhood. i was at a peak where i couldn’t even talk myself out of doing something permanent and that fact terrified me looking back on it. i haven’t ever cried my eyes out the way i did listening to your music for the first time. i wish i was able to verbalize the amount of ‘it’ll be okay’ energy that it just radiated altogether, how much i felt like i was actually alright, as if five minutes ago i wasn’t just considering ending my life. i ended up deleting that playlist i planned out of course, learned to take care of myself more and eventually i started listening to her own songs as a form of comfort whenever i do reach that mental point. i’m turning sixteen this december though, doing far better in terms of my mental health and i undoubtedly fell in love with her music all over again w this album. for those reading i hope mitski’s songs help u throughout what ur going thru as much as it’s helping me - it will get better. trust me. ^_^

I'm forcing my body not to scream. I used to have a pet lamb, he was my baby and the first animal I took care of. I loved him so much and I've spent my day sobbing my heart out with this exact song stuck in my head like a nail in a plank. He's not dead, either, we just don't know the location of the farm he lives on. I miss him so much, and the fact I'm having a depressive episode while he's calmly sleeping on grass with other sheep- I just wish I could hug my poor baby. He probably doesn't even remember me, which breaks my heart the most. I wish he loved me the way I love him. My baby. ❤

God I love this song so much. I adore how everyone has their own special connection and meaning for it. I interpret it as mitski’s saying that although life and the world at large is out of her control, she is grounded by her capacity to love both others and herself. It is such a sweet and wise message, and the way she is able to convey layered emotions like that in such a short amount of time is genuinely awe inspiring. Not to mention the beauty of the music itself. She is one of the best songwriters ever

This deeper velvety register of her voice in the chorus + the slow dreamy pace of this song is gorgeous…. That first part of the first verse “moon, a hole of light // through the big top tent, up high // here before and after me // shining down on me” I’ve never ever thought of the moon as a hole of light poked through the sky that is a tent I’ve never heard it be described in that way before. I can’t wait to carry this song with me through this winter and spring and to look at the moon where I am to picture it as it’s been written in this song

This song encapsulates the duality of being completely self loving/respectful and loving someone or something more than yourself-A parent to their child, an older sibling to their younger sibling, a friend to their friend, a person to their pets, a stranger to another stranger (ok, that's more of compassion but you know what I mean); relationships of all kinds with the mandatory 3: love/compassion, trust and accountability The world is so cruel but it's also so wonderfully filled with beings to love and be loved by. And it warms my heart to find songs that puts these feelings into something palpable for others to sit on or discover **yes, you have to be self loving and/or self respectful to have the capacity to fully love someone else. Not doing so leads to projection of or accepting unacceptable behavior. Hurt people will hurt people if they don't find a way to address their hurt.

I used to listen to this song a lot with my cousin when it first came out. Me and her are very close, we grew up like sisters, but these past few weeks have been hard for our family because she had to be in the ICU because she was critical due to some medical issues she has. Even though she is ok now, she still has a long road to recovery ahead of her, but I know she'll be able to get through it. Love you Ava ❤❤❤❤

This song always makes me sob. The first verse talking about dying and shining with the moon hurts because my friend committed suicide in April this year and since then, I keep looking at the stars trying to find them for some reason. There's always a star that seems really bright next to the moon and while I know its just a planet, in my head I want to believe it's my friend.

This is strangely comforting and calming, what I love about mitski songs is that the lyrics aren’t clear yet not difficult to understand, the way different people relate to it in different situations yet they’re all feeling the same let’t just take this song for example, at first glance it looks its written by a person who genuinely loves their partner then you listen to it again it’s like a mother singing a lullaby for her kids then listening to it again its like a sister or brother caring for their siblings and then listening to it again it seems like a best friend who wants the best for their best friend and at the end they’re all caring, I love your songs so much

  • @Felahliir

    @Felahliir

there's nothing weird about this song being calming, it's about how she's so full of love and willing to give that love away that she wants it to be her legacy, the line about shining down her love with the move is symbolic for how she wants people to still be loved by her and comfort them even after her death

One day when my boyfriend and I went out we were listening to music together all day. We went to a parking lot together and played this Mitsky song. I was wrapped in his arms and the tears were flowing down my face into a river as he hugged me tighter and tighter as if to protect me. I was afraid that he might not love me anymore at any moment and I thought it because of my old love stories, but he spoke to me with his eyes telling me that he will never leave me. It was that day that we said "I love you" for the first time and all this with this song in the background. I love him so much, I will always love him.

At first, hearing the chorus I thought she was singing about a lover or object of affection, but hearing it in full and watching the video i'm realizing she's talking about herself. "nothing in the world belong to me" - she's used to feeling lonely even surrounded by people. lovers, friends and even family come and go and don't really stay in her life forever. she also mentions mortality and dying in the first verse, maybe realizing her mortality after a family member has passed or because of a breakup. "but my love is mine all mine" - in the aftermath of loss she realizes she only has herself and the love and self-fulfillment she gets from living truly as herself, and that’s what keeps her living another day. it's such a beautiful song for self-love and independence. In the music video she's building chairs to get to the top and in the end it's presumed to get a better view of the moon. Perhaps the character thinks by getting closer to the moon she'll obtain what she wants (love that never ends, companionship, never having to be alone) but she's kept the chairs together held by a fragile egg at the bottom. I think the egg could mean a fragile relationship with a lover, or an overdependence on other people in general. It's the first time I'm hearing this song outside of social media, and hearing the lyrics I'm blown away. I posted this in the music video comments but thought I’d share it here too.

I think it's so gorgeous how instead of this album coming out in the winter, it came out at the end of summer, right before autumn leaves. Because listening to this melancholic music, looking up to the sky, and seeing the sunshine, it's given me hope. It's because of this music that I'm able to see how beautiful life is. It reminds me that even if I feel at my lowest, I still have love and the sun will keep shining. We all have love in us, remember that.

This song conveys Mitski’s message so damn well, both in music and message. It sounds so sad, and yet, so warm and comforting at the same time. It feels like a soft-spoken plea for her love to be shared or known in anyway before she goes. Just listening to it reminds me of my humanity and mortality, but not in a bad way. This song is definitely my fav, but the entire album is phenomenal. ❤

It’s like a love song to the moon. I love the moon, the nights I spent staring into it, smiling and wishing for things, resting my arms on my window still, touching the cold glass as I stare at it.

To all who exist... I love you. My belief in love has pulled me through so much pain, and after finding him... Im happy to be proven that this kind of love exists too. Soulmates exist. And theres love everywhere. All kinds of love. Good night everyone and sweet dreams. ❤😊 Edit: it makes my day knowing someone sees my message and knows someone out there loves them no matter what. Every time I see this post and the people who have responded and liked, it fills me with happiness. Hope you all have a wonderful day. And if it isn't, I hope so for every day after will be better.

i love the black and orange and the soothingness of this song it reminds me of a cozy and cold October night drinking something pumpkin spice-related and being all bundled up in your blankets just looking at the moon😍😍😍🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡🖤

Troppo bella questa canzone... anche prima di capirne il significato leggendo la traduzione e vedendo l'intervista a Mitski... davvero una canzone magica.

Mitski's voice sounds like a mother's lullaby, comforting her child from a nightmare. It's beautifully breathy and sweet. ❤️💞

I can't begin to explain how much these themes she's talking about in this new album speak to me now. It's so true Mitski; as long as our love is ours, we have everything we need. No matter how much it could hurt, you make me hope i'll be okay soon❤❤
