Miter Saw Dust Collection

In this video we are going to try to solve miter saw dust collection by increasing our air flow from the dust collector as well as try to gather the dust closer to the actual cut.
*This is designed to only work with 90° cuts.

I've used other (10" saws) previously and was pretty surprised with the speed and cutting ability of this Dewalt saw.I have bolted mine to a table to minimize movement which I highly recommend. This is a Great saw kzread.infoUgkxPeGkHOMe05FySypTOvYumxMn-xi39oRe with a light to see your cutting line (not a laser line).I'd recommend this saw fro anyone looking to upgrade from a 10" miter saw.

after watching your miter saw dust collector tool a couple times, I decided to make one for my miter saw. After I made it following your instructions it capture's about 95% of the dust when cutting. I had my miter saw on wheels stuffed back in the corner of the shop because it made a big mess all over. With your help now I'll be using it more. Thanks again for your video and ideas !!!

I believe that making an initial non-through cut from back to front is preferred as it allows the sawdust a channel to escape through when making your final cut, this should also help with directing the sawdust.

Just subscribed. Great presentation of your designs and changes. The miter saw has been my biggest frustration when it comes to dust collection. I've watched many videos of different ideas, but most were big and bulky to accomodate the compound angle cuts. But like you, most of my cuts are straight. I have a different saw but your idea will work for me perfectly. Thanks

Of all the many videos on this topic. your solution is by far the best. I think that you have a new Makita mitre saw which has far superior dust collection helps a lot. I am developing a similar "Sawdust Trap" for my older Makita as the current products pricing makes the switch a poor trade. Also your use of bruh strips was both innovative and very helpful!

Good Job!!! Nice results. I would think, by now, manufacturers could do a better job with their availabe money and CAD drawings to R&D this issue. Of coarse they would have to even care about it to begin with, which obviously this does not appear to be a priority. The few manufacturers that attempt to tackle the problem seem to always fall short. We can put a person into outer space , but we cannot design built in dust collection created by a chop saw at the product manufacture level. You are takeing an engineering approach, that not many do, to the age old problem. Thank you for your effort and willingness to share with the rest of us the results.

The challenge is for a "chop saw" the dust collection hurdle isn't nearly as high as for a compound sliding miter saw that has to do left and right angles and compound bevels. If you open up the face of any dust collection system enough that it allows all of those angles, it isn't nearly as efficient.

Thanks! I wanted to keep a top on since the some can fling up and out when it wasn’t there. Also on this saw the port and shoe that come down needed a place to clear so I had to make that opening larger than I wanted, so I used the brush cover that while it could still pass through. Not perfect, and I’m sure I’ll keep wanting to find an even better way at some point.

Did the same (similar) thing on my Dewalt a year ago. Works amazing. I did eliminate the Kreg fence though as I got tired of the deflection.

EXCELLENT VIDEO. WHAT YOU NEED IS TO BUILD FLEXIBILITY INTO YOUR MITRE SAW DUST BOX FOR ANGLED SAW CUTTING. THAT COULD BE ACCOMPLISHED BY SEPARATING THE PIECES OF WOOD WITH CANVAS: MAKE THE WOOD SIDES, TOP AND BOTTOM SMALLER AND BRIDGE THE GAPS BETWEEN THE PIECES WITH DUST-TIGHT CANVAS SO THE DUST CATCHER IS FLEXIBLE AND DEFORMABLE, ALLOWING EXTREME ANGLED CUTS WITH THE MITRE SAW. I BET YOU COULD PATENT A DESIGN AND CREATE A SMALL BUSINESS MAKING SUCH A DUST COLLECTION DEVICE THAT WOULD FIT MOST ANGLED SLIDING MITRE SAWS! THINK ABOUT IT. WHERE THERE IS A WILL, THERE IS A WAY!

Your design is pure genius. I made a similar one to fit my DeWalt and I bet it catches 95% of the dust. Now I'm using that as a template to make one to fit when my saw is at 45 degrees. I'll send you pics when I'm done. The adhesive brushes are one of the secrets to the great design. It works way better than a giant box around the whole saw and i'm selling my big Rousseau 5000 dust shroud, I never like it much. Anyway, thanks for the video.

great job, trying to control dust on a miter saw is the hardest thing to do, if it were easy it would have been done long ago. Thanks for sharing your great effort, I wouldn't have thought of changing the hose size. Well done,

Thank you, I really appreciate that. You’re right, I hate saw dust because it gets all over everything in the garage. I also just find it fascinating as it seems like there still aren’t a lot of good solves for some of it, and I’m just stubborn enough to try things until I find something that works. Haha.
