"Post shave balm is just another word for a fancy moisturizer." So true.

I have been using Mitchell’s for years. I use it in the Mitchell’s ceramic bowl. Place the puck in the bowl and keep it moist and it will then expand and fill the bowl. Do this over night before you intend to use it. When using it, wet it well and load a damp brush for about a minute, damp not wet. Then face lather while adding water to get it to its consistency. Always keep the puck moist in its bowl otherwise it will shrink and crack. It’s a hard soap so a bristle brush will be better than a badger brush although it’s still doable with a badger brush.

I've used Mitchell's for years and have nothing but praise for it. I've never had to soak it but I do live in Yorkshire and we have soft water. Around is also a nice shave soap and very cheap indeed. Thanks for the review of a great Yorkshire product.

Wise words Ash, when it comes to getting the soap blooming 🧼🪒👌🏼 I use Mitchell’s, we have hard water too. I really believe it’s all about the blooming 👍🏼 Mitchell’s is good for the skin 👌🏼

I have been using Mitchell's soap for a few months now and think it is pretty good. The china soap dish is very nice. It doesn't really have a strong smell but leaves your skin feeling good. I use it with a straight razor. Other very good brands worth trying include Phoenix and Beau and the Wickham soap company.

Great video Ash. Looked like a very good lather. I've been using Thayer's Witch hazel as an astringent, which you suggested in a prior video. It's Winter still here and I've been using Burberry London as my seasonal fragrance of choice. It's spicy and has won lots of positive comments. Cheers! Phil

Interesting technique. I always pre soak my brush and have no problems whatsoever with my Barba soap but this one seems nice as well.

GOOD job mate. Like this brand already.

Good video. Tried Mitchell's a few years ago.... I found it worked well enough but I do love a nice big smell. I've been using Taylors of OBS Cedar and as with all ToOBS, the shave is superb. They've just brought out an Oud flavour... and I do love Oud.

I ordered the new TOBS oud on Tuesday, hoping it will arrive tomorrow. A video will follow in due course if it's any good.

I’ve used many shaving soaps. My favourite is the Lather & Wood Barbershop tallow shaving soap. The fragrance is so good that I wash my hands with the damn soap and keep smelling them.

I am very fond of MWF. I use that every day it's excellent for my skin but I've never used the non tallow version. How does that work?

As an alternative to Aqua Velva, give Clubman Pinaud aftershave a try for that classic scent of the barbershop you visited as a lad.

Hi Ash, as a fellow shaved head chap, I’d appreciate a video on how you shave your head. I use a pit bull electric shaver, but I’m not to fond of the closeness of the shave.

Apparently Kent shaving soap is actually Mitchells wool fat,but slightly cheaper!

The lower price may be due to the lighter weight of Kent soap. Perhaps 5 grams is not much, but it gives you the opportunity to compete on price. Plus, compare packaging. Kent doesn't package his soap in a box. These are small things, but the customer pays for it.

Hi Ash I have been a big fan of MWF for some time. I live in a hard water area and have never had a problem lathering it even without blooming it. Can I ask if that was the proper woolfat as they haven’t made it for a while it has been replaced with a vegan version. Looking at your lather suggested to me it is vegan as the proper one is tallow based and you get a thick luxurious lather. I feel very sad that 2 of my favourite soaps MWF and Tabac have been ruined with the new vegan bases. The Rockwell razors are very good and I do like Nacet blades. Enjoyed the video. No doubt Mitchell's a good soap indeed. Some people can not handle it on skin due to lanolin allergy but most of us are gratefull for it.

After watching your videos, I have bought a King C. Gillette DE Safety Razor, and while it has been giving me a fantastic shave compared to the old cartridge razors, I've been running into some recurring problems. First off, my facial hair is dark and coarse enough, I've been doing two passes, both against the grain, because getting any less than a baby-bottom smooth face makes it look like I've got a 5 o'clock shadow already. Secondly, two parts of my face are just impossible to get a shave in without bleeding. My mustache comes in even coarser than the rest of my face, and even shaving diagonally I still usually nick myself somewhere. Directly under the nose is most difficult. Once I gave myself a cut on my upper-lip so bad, people were asking if I'd been in a fight (though I credit that to being the eighth shave on the same razor, I've still yet to determine the appropriate number of shaves before switching it out). The other part is my cleft chin. How does anyone shave with a cleft chin? I've tried to contort my face to stretch it taut, or to pull my skin the same way you do with your cheekbones, but nothing seems to stop getting some kind of blood running. Frankly, I'm wondering if I should go with a facial hair pattern based exclusively on where is a pain to shave. I am curious, does the pre-shave seem to protect your face moreso than going without it? I've been alternating between Tailor of Old Bond Street Peppermint, and Barbasol 1919 (a rub on like the Reuzel you've demonstrated). Would a pre-shave like Proraso, or indeed this Mitchell's Wool Fat shave soap, save me from having to buy an alum block?

You might try a Feather blade paired with an aggressive razor such as the Muhle R41 or an adjustable on its highest setting. As for the preshave, try washing your face with your favorite hair conditioner before the shave, or simply using that same conditioner for the shave itself. What works for others might also work for you. Hope this helps.

Myself current puck offer Fat is very difficult to lather. I've use its all over the country. But no joy. But, I can happily shave on the slickness. Obtaining an lather isn't really their problem. Dissipation is!

Hi Jim, I've been using the Mitchell's for a few weeks now and I have found it fairly easy to lather with some blooming, although I'm not too bothered to have a huge soapy shave, I am more interested in the quality of the shave experience on the chin, which is pretty damn good with the Wool Fat Soap. I've just ordered the new TOBS Oud shave cream, so looking forward to that experience - I have yet to find a better shave than TOBS at their price point!

Have heard some of the ingredients in Mitchell's wool fat will be prohibited in EU come December '23 and possibly GB in near future. Wonder if it will change its uniqueness if they change the recipe.

The secret is to not press too hard. A cartridge razor allows you to do this and you have become a habit. This should not be done when shaving with a bare blade. It's better to do three passes (shaving) than fast and to hard.

Is it available in Canada? I like that it is a block, not an aerosol can. You can also get shampoo and conditioner bars.

Hi Ash referring back to your video on MWF soap. As I have already said I love MWF tallow version. I would like to suggest a couple of soaps that give a top notch shave both made in this country that don't cost a fortune. DR Harris and Phoenix and Beau. Please don't think I am being clever I am purely trying to be helpful and hope you take this in the way its intended. Keep well and keep safe.

I have been a user if DR Harris for a long time, in fact, I shaved with No29 this morning. Whilst I like Harris, I do not think it surpasses TOBS or Trumper products in any way, however, they charge £10 more for their shave cream (same size). With that in mind I cannot recommend DR Harris opposed to their neighbours in the St James area of London. I am unfamiliar with the Phoenix & Beau brand, I will look them up.

@@TheChapsGuide Ash 29 is a cream I was referring to their hard soaps which retail for approx £13. MWF tallow soap I would give 10 out of 10 but I'm not keen on the vegan versions a lot of soap makers are changing to. Just my personal opinion I find you don't get the luxurious lather and comfort with the shave. Keep up the good work.

Your lather looks dense and wet but not of great volume. I wonder what you would find if you use soft water.

$120 per bottle of Bleu...... or $20 for the BLUE on amazon..... wonder how they compare

Hi Ash, I’ve been eyeing up ‘ the fat’ for quite a time so I may have to force open my wallet, remove all the moths and dust and buy a puck ! Did you get a bit of a menthol hit of the pre shave ?

In these Inflationary Times. HERE IS AN EASY WAY TO DO IT MY FRIENDs Use any hard Bar Soap, Tallow or Glycerin based Soaps out there? To fit in any Mugs or Cups? Like" (Mitchells' Wool Fat or Arko Sticks. Just to name a few of them?) You can mix and match your old Soaps? Cut up the soap on a paper plate, pour your soap chunks with the shavings from the Paper Plate into a Mug, cover the soap with a small amount of water, and microwave your soap. For about a minute or so? Place a paper plate under your mug in case it bubbles out of your cup? If it foams up, STOP. The water keeps it from burning itself up. (DON'T OVER WATER YOUR SOAP??) Easy, does it? Let cool don't want to Crack the Mugs or Cups you're using? (You just want it to Congeal in your Mug or Cup') it is very hot and watery'''''. let it cool in PLACE'. after it cools, put it in a Sunny Window, until the Soap hardens? When using your soaps, use Dry Brush Less Water. It thickens the soap, making it easier to use on your face. Save your Money, spend it on your wife, don't listen to the shave Mafia. Hello Ash, I'm Wojtek (read Voytek). You have an honest face, so you get a thumb up from me. There are several ways to make nice lather this soap, but you not have created very well. The start was good. Then, after load to the brush, the soap needs water. Water it turns dense, dry and unstable foam into a stringy foam. It is best to do it in a crucible or in a bowl and only then apply the ready foam to your face. "Pre Shave" is cheating. Take some prepared soap and rub it in the same way and you will see that it will work the same way. The foam of this soap is wonderfully slippery. Any other specifics are an insult to this soap. This is just my opinion. There is another and simpler way to create lather from this soap. I didn't figure it out but I also tried shaving this metod. Pour warm, but not hot, water over the soap and wait a few minutes. Then, do not pour out the water, but cover the container tightly and shake it vigorously until you no longer hear the water inside. After opening you will receive ready-made shaving foam. It's a little trick. I encourage you to try both tips. Best regards and I wish you health very much. Wojtek 🤓

A wise man for not shaving against the grain. So may you tubers do so but I have yet to see a dermatologist or barber who suggests it.

Looks like Ash is definitely going against the grain on some parts though. Around the chin and below the nose especially.

My girlfriend when she does her legs will get really bad bumps if she goes against the grain. Everyone is different and different skins Han shaving differently.

Everyone's beard is different and grows in different directions. Most barbers use cutthroat razors, which are very difficult to handle in different directions, especially if you are doing it yourself and how many dermatologists have you asked??
