After owning a spyder for over 4 years i completly agree with everything you said. I actually get a kick out of telling people oh its just a toyota and the look on their faces is priceless! I went the progressive lowering spring and koni shocks route but that was still wayy too soft and rolly. I eventually got fender flares and wider wheels and i cut a coil and a half off the top of my springs and it rides soo much better now. You have to have the right kind of spring in order to cut it so do your research, also i would only recomend cutting progressive springs that are too soft otherwise your ride quality will be crap. Because it still has progressive spring rates for the bumps it has almost no body roll now and rides super smooth! The ride is actually much better than my sti with $2000 coilovers with custom spring rates. 17x9 wheels on the spyder help a lot but honestly the car was more fun with skinny tires where i didnt have to go 50 mph around small round abouts to get close to the limits of the tires. I literally dont have to brake for many turns ever, i find myself going 35-40 mph around 90 degree right hand turns.

I miss my MR2 Spyder. I had put KSport coilovers on mine too when I had it. Now I'm looking to get a Miata but every time I see a nice MR2 Spyder it makes me want to get another one.

Excuse me while I disagree with everything you just said lol 1. The one ZZ is not terrible, it may not have a lot of power, but its so reliable you can take it to 300K miles no problem if you maintain it. It's also really economical. Another upside is that when molded with a turbo kit and some accessories it can easily surpass the 2ZZ. You could reach 500HP with this engine, the 2ZZ will have problems getting past 300HP because of the special cylinder wall coating. The 1ZZ is also better on the street because of the low end torque and more usable power band compared to the 2ZZ. 2. So you mean you don't like that Toyota is not a Luxury brand? but literally who cares if some asshole has a car that costs more than 10 houses? That's like being mad about your boat because someone out there owns a yacht. This is stupid. 3. Aftermarket, both the 1ZZ and 2ZZ are well recognized engines with TONS of after market support. The 2ZZ is the Lotus engine and the 1ZZ is also used by a car you may have heard of called the Corolla. There's also coil overs, LSDs, and every brace you need. Now if you're talking about those raicer body kits, then I'm glad they're rare so MR2s can still be OEM after 20 years. 4. As for body roll, I don't know what's wrong with your car because the MR2 is almost stuck to the ground and has a very wide wheel base for its size. Some roll on the back is also good so you don't lose traction suddenly and find yourself hugging a tree. I may be biased though because I have TRD braces.

After owning my MR-S for about 6 months now, I can agree with Mitch that the aftermarket scene is horrendous for this car. This is my current biggest pet peeve with it. Not only that, the parts you can actually find... be it replica's or genuine OEM or TRD.. are all expensive as hell... importing anything from JP, USA or UK to Australia (where I'm from) requires VERY deep pockets. Most of the good parts are discontinued too so you're at the mercy of unknown used items 90% of the time. I think I've already spent a small fortune on this car already. Biggest purchase to date was for sure my hardtop. $3000+ USD isn't a meme.

100% agree with all of these reasons, I have since fixed most of these things. One other thing I don’t care for as my spyder was my reliable daily for 5 years is that it doesn’t really have a decent trunk. You can fit small things in the fronk and behind the seats but it’s a tight fit for storage. Inside there is much more space for the driver than any year Miata though so that’s a big plus because long trips are no issue.

I wonder if you had bad shocks. When I bought my car it had aftermarket cheap KYB shocks and stock springs and I get very little body roll, it's almost too stiff. I can't imagine KYB would design a one to one oem replacement part to be that much stiffer than stock. Then again I've never driven an MR-S with stock shocks. I do plan to get coilovers eventually, this is one area where you can find several aftermarket options for the Spyder so I can't seem to decide which to go with. Would like to spend between 800-1800 bux and have full adjustability.

Kybs are slightly stiffer than stock but theres no getting around the fact that the stock spyder suspension rolls like a truck.

@@plovo5958 My 2ZZ is faster but I do miss that snap you back in your seat instant torque of the long stroke 1ZZ. Should've gone with a stroker crank in the 2zz instead of a lightweight knife-edged crank which kept the square design, oversquare just gives so much at the bottom end. All I saw in my head was revs and top end HP and I didn't give torque it's fair due.
