Filling a request from a viewer today with the excellent Pac-Man Collection XM homebrew hack that just released in 2020, and has seen several updates since. The stand-out feature of this hack is the support of the never-released XM module, which allows for Yamaha (YM2151) sound. MiSTer's Atari 7800 core has this module fully integrated, so you can experience the game in full. This includes high-score saving support as well via the integrated XM module.
This collection includes more versions of Pac-Man than I knew existed, and they all have several options to modify gameplay, including stage randomization and my favorite- speedup!
Had a blast trying the different modifiers and the odd versions of the game that have varied effects when you pick up power pellets and odd stage layouts. Check the timestamps to skip to a particular version. I tried 4 of them with speedup, and then finished by playing the original Pac-Man at normal speed. Probably should have started with that one because it is extremely hard to go directly from the speedup versions to the original slower speed. It's reminiscent of playing Street Fighter II Turbo/Hyper Fighting and then going back to the original version. Makes it feel extra-slow.
Our new Atari 7800 core came out of the gate with extreme accuracy thanks to Kitrinx. She is a dedicated MiSTer dev who has been a constant advocate for proper preservation. I've never met a person so excited about making old hardware obsolete, and we are lucky to have someone with this talent and drive working with the project so closely.
