MiSTer FPGA in 2022: A Primer Guide to Retro Gaming's Hardware Emulator / MY LIFE IN GAMING

Ойындар

Coury and Try go over what it's like to get started with the MiSTer FPGA project in 2022 - the parts you need, the processes required to set it up, what you need to do to get great audio and video, and what kinds of fun things you can do with the many console, computer, handheld, and arcade cores! You might just see that it isn't nearly as hard as you thought it was!

Also a heads up for everyone looking to buy/make one. Don't buy from a scalper unless you absolutely need one now. The DE-10 Nano is always being made and coming back in stock. Patience will save you a ton of money

[Try4ce] I bought a second DE-10 Nano directly from Terasic just a few weeks ago. They ship fast, but it was $40 shipping. But given that the cost of everything is going up these days, I'm not so sure you'd save money waiting to buy it from somewhere else.

Wherever demand outpaces supply, you get scalpers. Videos like this are awesome, but exacerbate the issue by increasing awareness. Plus the chip shortage isn’t helping, too.

@@agentmith for sure. MLIG will definitely bring more eyes on the product but I still think the supply issues won't be a huge problem in the long run. There's been plenty of opportunities to buy them during quarantine at fair prices and I think it'll continue that way. It's definitely not a product like the analogue pocket

I bought one direct too. Got it much faster than the site said. They shipped same day even though the de10 said back ordered until mid April. Yes the $40 international shipping was hefty, and a bit of a bummer since they shipped it from here in the states… but I got my mister pretty much in 3 days. Also, the folks that offer the Ultimate Mister Kit are great. 👍

I'm in the EXACT same boat. At times, my atari, nes and genesis were the only friends I had but my games and systems were lost during moves or sold behind my back for my mom and sister's addictions. I watch in awe at all these KZreadrs who got to keep all their games and systems from their childhood and can't help but wish I had too but emulation gives me that door to my childhood memories. Memories I completely forgot come flooding back when playing certain games.

I bought a mister last year and it changed my life in so many ways. I honestly didn't even understand what a CRT television did but I bought the full mister kit with analog board just the same. Realizing I had paid extra for the mister with analog output inspired me to actually get a CRT tv to "try it out," and now I'm all the way down the rabbit hole. Fast forward to today and I now own a 27" JVC D Series CRT television, rotatable LCD screens for tate games, and even a home built arcade cabinet to plug the mister into. I have retired my PSP dock and PSP TV now thanks to the core updates. I have even gotten into collecting classic controllers such as the SNES mouse, light guns, a negGcon, and more. This has been an adventure and it's still going. I could keep telling stories for pages and new stories are still being made.

Funny experience I had with MiSTer (as a someone who is fairly non-technically inclined) is that I had tried rpi before and couldn’t get my head around how to utilize it well… all these different images available etc, I never really got it going. But when I grabbed my first MiSTer a couple years ago it clicked right away. I’ve found it really straightforward to use and the community has been so awesome with any questions or issues I ran up against.

1:32:20 This single NES audio comparison is what I love about watching MLiG! Perfect snippet to compare -- familiar song, and a part that lends itself well to looping. The timing of the changes is so right, it's as if it was a real nine second repetitive NES loop heh. And the attention to detail of using the four characters for the four samples.. 👍

I own most retro consoles but I love the mister and its versatility. Just the amount it does in such a small footprint along with having the ability to scale when using a monitor that supports 480p is awesome. Built some controller boards for old joysticks and pads for minimal lag and the experience is no different from the real thing and in many cases the pixel clarity, through RGB, looks better to me. The fact too that it has such a large dev community makes it incredibly exciting as new implementations come out. I'd say its my device of the decade.

Thank you for mentioning something about sound. While everyone just lets 48kHz ride, people either forget or are too young to know that the majority of consumer Arcade and TV speakers were straight garbage. More fidelity does not equal better in this case. Actually, the longer waveforms in lower frequency sounds produced by low quality drivers were perfect for noisy environments since they have the power to resonate through the noise (think about bass in music). Back when emulation was new, I started to set NES game audio to mono, 8-bit (22 kHz) and older arcade games to mono, 4-bit (11 kHz) and they’d sound perfect on regular headphones. 1:29:47 I see what you did there. Thanks for the MiSTer deep dive MLiG! This will definitely open some minds!

Guys, this is an absolutely outstanding video. You have probably outdone yourselves, and that is already a high bar you've set for yourselves. People will be referring to this as a moment in time for game preservation, and I'm sure subsequent follow-ups to this will be equally as informative. Really appreciate how you've clearly broken down not just the steps of how to prepare and customize the MiSTer, but how you wisely interspersed in-game video and sound between the more technical jargon pieces. It really helped the video remain engaging in what easily could easily have been confusing due to all the features and capabilities of the cores, audio/video tweaks, etc. Bravo, MLIG!

I thankfully got my DE-10 right before they sold out just before christmas last year. I was super interested when the NeoGeo was being developed, and knew I had to jump in once the CPS-2 was live. Looking forward to more of Jotego's arcade cores that he's got lined up to work on. Recently the PolyGame Master that Video Game Esoterica has been going though reviewing has been on my watchlist, and I think Jotego has that lined up to work on soon, which makes me quite excited.

Videos like this are a testament to why you are THE best retro gaming channel on all of KZread and quite possibly....one of the best overall channels on all of KZread as well. By the way....any chance for "Analogue Frontiers part 4"? Lol.

lots of people in the community have been clamoring for a portable form factor for this reason exactly. It's tricky, because obviously someone has to make this stuff, and the consumer has to buy it, usually not for cheap. this specific use case is probably one where Analogue has the leg up on MiSTer (with their Pocket line)

Forced scandoubler on a VGA CRT monitor is a great option, thanks for highlighting it. I use a little scanline generator dongle and it gives really great results. If you ever do a follow up video to this it might be good to flag up the physical jumpers on the analog IO board, these are important if you are using an RGB scart cable on a consumer set or a scaler or other device that behaves like a consumer set. This is how the relevant lines are set on the scart cable to identify the signal as RGB. This is most relevant to users in Europe and similar areas who have access to RGB scart consumer sets so it’s completely understandable that it won’t have come up in your exposure to this stuff so far. I can’t say I’ve used it but to my understanding SNAC typically only supports 1 controller when used with the console cores, so that is one catch that people might need to bear in mind. A good USB controller with decent levels of lag according to the misteraddons test document is generally a much better option where possible for vast majority of users given all the caveats that come up with SNAC. Great video as always. Thanks!

This is so solid, I can't believe how long it is, while still being well-paced. I love the more conversational style of Audi's segment. Euro Micros are still so foreign and odd to me, even with a little tinkering on MiSTer's Amiga. Dear God, do I need an MT32-Pi now? I've resisted the allures of pi for so long because I don't exactly need more technical rabbit holes in my life, but if I used it ONLY as an external MIDI synth, we might be in business.

I've been someone that mostly just emulates consoles on other consoles in ways that are "good enough". My main classic games from the 3rd and 4th gens are on my Wii and Wii U, my OG Xbox runs Arcade games, and I use my Vita for PS1 and PSP stuff. I've also been more interested in picking up handheld hardware alongside flash carts, since those provide the more unique experience to invest in with how high retro game prices are these days. But I'll admit, this video is at least making me interested in potentially picking up a MiSTer with how detailed and well done it is. Probably won't be for a while since I'm focusing on getting some other hardware mods done on my current stuff and picking up the handhelds I want before they become unobtainable, it's something I'm interested in keeping an eye on for future reference. I'd personally like to wait for a composite output option since I'm very much a composite snob, but then again I still don't have a CRT and have been looking for one for a while. Here's hoping I can find one soon before those get impossible to find too... But really, anything that benefits game preservation is A-OK in my book. Glad to see this project be as good as it is and am excited to see how PS1, Saturn and 3DO works out! I thankfully have an N64 with a flash cart already, but those other consoles I have to emulate on my PC which isn't very fun for me personally. I prefer playing console games in my room on my bed. If those work out properly, I'll probably get one then. Till then I'll stick with my Wii and Xbox, but I suspect I'll join the MiSTer family earlier then I expect.

Not directly related to the mister, but just wanted to say how impressed I've always been with this channel. Such incredible editing and production values for what is essentially extremely niche applications of a niche hobby. You wouldn't expect videos about optimizing the output of old game consoles or the small FPGA emulation scene to have such quality. Though I guess these days more and more these things aren't as niche as before, which is awesome, I'm excited to see the scene growing.
