I purchased a fully kitted out RetroCastle dual ram with lots of add-ons. Never thought I'd buy a 2nd MiSTer because of how much it set me back. Now it's looking like I'll be able to replace a Retropi with this clone in a DIY arcade. VERY exciting times.

@@VideoGameEsoterica Elusive at this point, I just got a rebranded Philips CM8833-MKII (Akorn Visto), a 14" 15/24Khz Dual-Scan), a small but beautiful monitor, razor sharp scan-lines for 240p and 384p, I want to use it for the MiSTer Sharp X6800, Amiga, DOS cores, and the multi-res Arcade games, those amazing GBS-C or the GBS-8100 boards can enable a standard 240p CRT to handle 24Khz though, it just transcodes 24Khz signals to 15Khz in real time (to 240p or 288p) and it does it flawlessly without any black screen hanging et cetera, great for using something like a nice big D-Series as an arcade monitor.

He could use a different barrel connector than what is used on DE-10 builds for people who will own both. Honestly a basic part of electronics is looking at the voltage and polarity of the input DC barrel jack before you plug things in.

Well, he clarified that it will accept 5v or 12v through the DC jack so it needs to be able to fit the existing 5v PSUs. Perhaps he could get a 12v PSU with a smaller inner diameter and a jack that still fits the 5.5x2.5mm 5v PSUs with a smaller center pin.

I can see where making custom cables for the header to support weirder setups could require crimping/soldering too but he said it would include a 5v cable of some kind. That would be weird if there isn’t a place to plug it in.

Most MiSTer boards have been manufactured at a small-scale in Europe and the U.S., and the price so far reflected that. The Terasic boards they built off of were also priced up for enterprise & educational clients, so it pushed up the costs of the hardware. Taki Udon is mass-producing these in China, where parts & labor are a lot cheaper. So, it makes sense that if Terasic used to be able to produce these boards for $125, Taki could produce it for less. I’m not surprised by it going under $100 retail, but launching with that after announcing a higher price is deeply impressive.

Oh, absolutely not - I have a whole plan for using these in dedicated per-system retro setups if they’re worth buying. (Lots of the second-generation consoles, for instance, use numpad controllers which don’t translate well to modern inputs - it would be awesome to have a dedicated system just for running those under FPGA, without having to connect and configure some dedicated method.) It’s worth price-comparing this to something like Analogue’s Pocket system. It’s well-known that they take some pretty healthy margins, and they still got a dual-FPGA architecture with a 615 ppi screen & controls for $219. With that in mind, I don’t see how a single-chip board with some pin headers and an HDMI out isn’t doable for under $100, especially if you’re looking at making it as inexpensive as possible like Taki seems to be.

I bought my DE-10 nano years ago on a whim. This was pretty early on in the MiSTer's development. 128MB RAM had just been introduced. It was "only" $180 or $160 Canadian and I thought the technology was neat. Then I put it away and didn't get back to it till the end of 2022. At one point I thought I'd busted it and was balking at the their current price. Then I thought, what if I want a second? Not at current prices, that's for sure. THIS changes all that. Hell I'll buy two and give one to my brother.

I was just catching up with all this new gaming tech stuff, as i just always deal with old game consoles and a little pc stuff, but i hadnt really had time in life to even play games for awhile and so have been out of keeping up with all this new stuff going on and im thinking of even investing in this sort of thing as ive been afraid i wont even be able to find some old games anymore from what ive been reading about recent times with all the shutting down access to old games online and physical mediums being harder to find or priced ridiculously. I just bought a modded PS3 that plays ps2 and have a line on a og xbox that ive put off buying for too long. But now ive been learning that maybe i dont even need all these old consoles, or one of every console system to be able to get and play a wide range of games as i have a mishmash of different consoles i like games for and would be amazing to just pick n choose a custom collection of games on one great emulator device. It doesn't sound like its going to be priced to the heavens, which is what i was afraid of, which was the biggest deterrent for me. Im investing in one of these!

I hope Taki's consoles will have an internal Pico_Synth or at least an internal header for the MT32-Pi, ideally in the form of the 40 pin GPIO slot, but an internal I/O port for a Raspberry Pi would at least mean a nice complete MiSTer setup, imo the absolute best option for the flagship MiSTer console would be either the DIMM compute module slot, or the double header CM slots, so you can install a CM4 or CM5, imagine the functionality an 8GB CM5 would bring to a MiSTer console, from an onboard Retro-NAS drive, to a powerful audio DSP, built-in native support for MiSTerCast, support for open-source cart readers, powerful media content support, it would be a massive upgrade to the MiSTer, I can't think of a more impactful upgrade option.

@@VideoGameEsoterica True lol, but it really just boils down to a compute module header, and going from there, it would just open the MiSTer up to so much more functionality, the most potentially exciting of which is opening up the Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube and Xbox, plus the DS & 3DS, PSP and even the Wii, all on your MiSTer console, could be done a couple of ways, either through porting MiSTerCast to a Raspberry-Pi OS such as RGB-Pi, or perhaps via Racallbox and using the MiSTer as the GPU & RGB DAC, I actually already use Recallbox through my MiSTer via MiSTerCast on an Intel M5 CPU compute stick, which is a powerful SoC that can run all 6th gen and DS & 3DS (which looks stunning on a CRT, the Ocarina of Time 3DS remaster looks so damn good on a PVM), I have it installed internally inside my MiSTer case connected to the Blister module via one of the internal USB lines, the Intel PC stick is set to run on the network by sharing on USB 3.0 for MiSTerCast, it also has a 1TB USB SSD running as a RetroNAS drive, allowing me to add and edit games on any computer on the network, I also have tons of classic GOG PC games installed on it, games like Beyond Good & Evil and Silent Hill 2 Directors Cut (the PC Enhanced edition), Steamworld Heist look so good in 240p, I also have Roland Sound Canvas 3.2 with the official Roland XG & GS MIDI soundbanks, as well as a bunch of different synth plugins and DSP plugins, which enables you to really make the MiSTer sound incredible, you can add flanging, reverb, low-pass-filter, bass & treble EQ enhancement, properly tuned profiles for all the different consoles, you can use auto tune to really improve some of those not so great FM synth soundtracks made with GEMS for instance, or bit-crushing. I have loads of classic full-frame 4:3 TV shows loaded on it too like Tales of teh Crypt, Buffy, Ren & Stimpy and so on, so yeah, you can really do a lot with it, but I'd love an official native CM5 header and MiSTerCast version that's officially part of the MiSTer platform, some of the amazing MiSTer devs could really do some incredible things with it, imo, bringing together the best of Rapberry Pi Retro software like RGB-Pi and MiSTer together is where things should be moving towards, a hybrid powerful ARM & FPGA console could be really amazing, using FPGA for the GPU, video & audio DAC side of things will get rid of most if not all the percievable latency that traditional 6th gen soft emulators have, and be the next best thing to full-fat FPGA 6th gen console cores and hold us over for the next few years until its possible for full native FPGA 6th gen.
