Mistakes to Avoid in an AFL Rebuild
Спорт
Rebuilding can be a tricky task for any AFL club. In this video, Kristian Barron aka The Ruck Rover takes a look at how the Fremantle Dockers got it wrong in 2018 and warns the rest of competition of the mistakes they should avoid ahead of the 2021 AFL National Draft.

Excited that we just took Amiss and Erasmus. Local boys, proven good talent, seems like there’s a spot for them to earn and make their own. Please let them be good, especially after our announcement of a flag by 2024

The best example of rebuilding in recent times is Richmond, by far. They've had great success in the rookie list area & identifying mature age talent.
A part of me thinks those decisions to trade big for Lob, Hogan, McCarthy etc. was Lyon and Rosich clutching their straws and desperately trying to climb back up again sooner than later when we should of just stuck to the draft. Nice to see our board more focused on the draft now Garlick, Bell and Longmuir are on board
As a Port fan I am very happy with how 2018's draft went :p
I never knew you were a dockers fan. Love this channel even more
I don't remember too many people at the time complaining about bringing in Hogan and Lobb. In hindsight obviously we wouldn't have done it, but what can you do though, they were pretty good players at the time so of you course make the trades.
@BasedMothman

At that point in time anybody would've traded for Hogan, had kicked 152 goals in his first 71 games until then. As he's shown when he played in 2021, when he's mentally and physically healthy he's a 2+ goal a game forward who will take a bunch of marks. Freo just got really unlucky with Hogan, hopefully for his sake his career and health stay on track because his talent is obvious.

Yeah everyone is an expert in hindsight. But he is right. You have to go full into the draft when you're at the bottom of the ladder and Freo went half arsed.

Wow....the AFL Tifo! Awesome content.
2022/23 will tell the story, but I think North are doing it right. After being mid range team we delisted the old wood, we bottomed out, and we are rebuilding from the midfield out. A good coaching appointment is pivotal. 2021 was a development year - 4 wins and a draw. We have secured a tall makring ruck/forward in Coleman-Jones, a workhorse midfielder in Hugh Greenwood, and we got our first ever number 1 in Horne-Francis who looks like a very good number one talent. In the 2020 draft North had pick 3. We bypassed the key forward options and went for Will Philips. After missing 2020 season, 2021 was a development year for Will. And I expect good things from him in 2022. He has good hands in close, and is an excellent kick to the inside 50 - priceless. North now has a group of talented youngsters who can grow together. Very important to get that cluster of talent, around the same age, to form a core. The last time this happened was the group that came through in the early nineties that enjoyed success as youngsters under Pagan, and went on to dominate in the later half of that decade.
Great after the fact video. That is simply regurgitating what happened as opposed to a real solution. Dockers will always be battlers.
Sturt is my favourite Youngster at Freo, just needs to stay healthy. So good seeing him running around this pre season 😪 Freo are on the up, last few drafts have got us set for the future 📈
great video, i love the dockers to
Hopefully this is good news for North Melbourne after we all but forced ourselves into a fresh rebuild last year... But the team is looking good, with some experience will be great. Would love to see us achieve the same as Melbourne and Footscray have in recent years.
So glad my Roos are on the right track this time. ☺️
Brilliant video, love the humour. Would love to have one of the blue abroad peoples do something similar to describe the wonky rebuild of my beloved Carlton FC. Keep up the good work!

Spot on..
The true statement that summarises everything wrong with building a team from scratch is "don't lust after players to fit a narrative". It will always lead to disappointment. Freo botched it with Pav's successor, GC and Carlton were fixated on Gary Ablett and Paddy Cripps to build their respective sides and it didn't pan out. GC have moved on (mostly, although they love Rowelly) but Carlton are doing it again with Sam Walsh being the sole prodigy to save them from mediocrity. Will wait and see with Carlton in 2022, but all three of these clubs I listed have been stagnant for a long time trying to fulfil a dream.

I feel like additional to this video, you should create another one explaining how essendon was able to change their fate quickly through a rapid rebuild which is the dead opposite of freos rebuild
@FootyA2Z
2 жыл бұрын
Just started researching exactly this 👀
West Coast might say they're not rebuilding but they just took 5 picks in the national draft and picked up a second round pick for 2022. They've had a lot of turnover and they know they've got more coming.
Don't forget the 2001 trade deal involving Freo where they paid overs. Received : McPharlin, Trent Croad . Gave up: Pick 1, 20 and 36 (Luke Hodge, Elstone and Sam Mitchell). There was one clear winner in that deal- Hawks.
Remember the Tigers gave up pick three for Fiiora. And Pavlich walked to Freo. One of my biggest regrets in tigerland recruiting
@sentimentalbloke185

More than made up for in recent years.
The Draft only works when Clubs recruit what they need.. (There's no use recruiting five young defenders, if your team is already full of good defenders). This causes an oversupply, with the young players not getting games, getting dis-illusioned and usually leaving the club. Thanks to the 'stupid' best available policy my own team have failed to fill a full forward position shortage for over 5 years only recently have they wizened up and rejected this policy and things are looking up.
The dadadadadadada starts playing at the start
I like the comedy Kristian brings. Good vid.

North look scary good.
Cant agree more with the “dont trade for need, get best available” rule. Essendon have fallen in that trap so often the last twenty years and have a very checkered draft history as a result, which in turn can be directly linked to the much maligned lack of a single finals win in so long. Getting Hobbs in 2021 hopefully bucks that trend.
Wait, my memory was screwed on Matera, I thought we delisted him for his years of poor effort, I didn't know Freo gave up a third rounder for that spud. Regarding the Harley Bennell trade, it was a disaster but I still would have taken it I were Freo for the slim possibility that he fulfilled his Brownlow -caliber potential.
Easy to say in hindsight. I mean Ben Kings injury?? Steven May's first season?? Does scouting actually work? Look at St kilda year after year of draft bust???
Collingwood trading Beams turned into De Goey, Crisp AND Levi Greenwood
Hope finals is around the corner for us we need to be better this year or else it’s a fail

Well aye my team actually won its first round!
Carlton should watch this
It's in Freo's DNA to throw picks at established players since inception... Most of which become duds. Eagles get ex-first round Petrevski-Seton for next to nothing in 2021, but we show desperation for trades. Finally we have a core group of early draft picks to build around.

Carlton right now: "Write that down! write that down!"
Yeah, and West Coast selling the farm for Tim Kelly who has not performed as well as he did in Geelong was a mistake on our part. We could have given the Cats Jarrod Brander like they wanted, as part of the deal, but we handed over 2 first and 2 second round picks instead, which meant we went into the 2020 draft virtually empty-handed... and now we've just let Jarrod Brander walk for free. Muppets.

The WA & SA clubs seem to have an obsession with luring back local talent that has been drafted to another state rather than making more objective assessments of the actual players concerned.

West Coast thought their premiership window was still open after their remarkable success in 2018. On paper this was true but they have not been able to get any consistency and are probably going to have to go through a rebuild soon too.
Still can't 100% work out who at Freo thought Hogan was worth pick 6...

That's why Freo knocked Back Neale this year. He had to go back to the Lions with his tail between his legs. He will end up at freo next year anyway for a far less pick.
Don't worry mate my club Carlton has had a few doozies since the Salary cap breaches in 2001 the only hard decision was to let go of JJ Kennedy for a Chris Judd in 2005
Fremantle have finally found the successor to Matthew Pavlich in Jye Amiss
Unofficial rule of drafting: If there is a kid from Castlemaine, draft him; Dustin Martin & Jack Ginnivan are prolific Castlemaine exports
Ben King was never staying in Perth. Hogan is from Perth. It was the right call at the time.
They didn’t screw it up congratulations Fremantle.
Is this the same Bloke who narrated economics explained??
Jack Anthony, Colin Sylvia, Harley Bennell, Cam McCarthy, Hogan - all crabs Freo paid overs for.
Eagles and Geelong are going to be in the exact same situation.
100% the most important thing to know for the AFL is are you contending, building or rebuilding. Contenders should be willing to forget about the future to give themselves the best chance of a premiership, building teams are trying to get better while keeping their young assests, and rebuilding teams need to accept the possibility of sucking to be as good as possible in a few years. If you are none of these things, you are irrelevant and need to figure something out
