There really is no absolute correct way when it comes to making art. It's all subjective and styles vary. As long as it looks awesome to almost everyone and you're having fun while making it, then that's all that matters.

He did make the nails much sorter and rounder, so that affects the look a lot. You may wanna play around with different nail shapes (you can find specific charts online) in a more anatomically accurate way, if you still don't like the look you can switch back to the stylized option. You can also combine these ways or make up your own. I love art so much.

My nails are flat though. It really differs from person to person how your nails look.

It's not a "mistake", it's a simplification. you can draw flat nails, you can even draw less phalanges in fingers than there really are (gasp!) for ease of rendition. If you're drawing comics, animation, or anything where you have to crank out multiple images fast - it's an option. And using the same style for a standalone piece doesn't invalidate said piece just because it's not a part of a serialized production.

I think this depends on the type of fingers too. The transition from my skin to my nails is flat so I usually draw it that way, with just the nail curve 😅.

Now that you pointed that out I realize how fucked up my nails are. Flat, 1-2 divots, no step where the nail meets the skin. Each finger having a combonation of any of these.

It’s not that uncommon actually. The step he draws in the drawing is quite a bit more dramatic than on most people. I don’t have any step at all, and if you look at pictures online, it’s the same for a lot of people. Don’t worry, your nails aren’t weird.

Thanks for that man, it's a small detail but a great addition. No wonder it felt a bit missing, I will keep this in mind whenever I draw hands up close.

this is why learning anatomy is so important. i always draw from real ppl so learning stuff about bodies is very interesting

This is what i love about sailor moon's animations(or at least the original stuff)! When there is any close up of a non-gloved hand (like during transformations or a character doing homework) they actually show this technique off very well!

usually I use my own hands as a reference, and I have flat nails, so i don't draw them that way 😅

I think it really depends what style you are drawing; for example, if you are doing an anime type sketch, it would be more simple and flat. For a realistic one, you would have to follow the anatomy more.

The transformations in the original Sailor Moon show this off very well. Simplified yet still better than flat

honestly i think the upwards curve while drawing is so much prettier despite being much more unrealistic 😅 ill keep this in mind for more realistic drawings though ❤

For most people its anatomically correct, but for some people, their fingers nails are flat. I crush my fingers alot when I was young so my fingersdon'thave the dip before the nail. I guess it just deepens on what/who you're drawing.

also some people have different styles and draw for example "fused nails" (nails fused to the flesh even more than normal), sharp fingers, with the nails also completely fused with the finger and the square fingers (which are some more realistic), etc, Etc, ETC, *E.T.C.* ....

honestly the first drawing looks like a somewhat correct way of drawing acrylic nails! or at least a gel set, since they raise the nail slightly above the skin

Although I draw in pretty simple artstyle, but I think it's useful!!!

Honestly I always used to draw nails convex since it is how real nails are and I just referenced myself always, but I thought it looked so clunky and ugly. It just interrupts the flow. I personally like the look so much better when learning to stylise the nails

The perk is that you don't need to worry to draw nails because you can't draw the limbs in the first place

Genuinely drawing the angles the nails would be at helps make the entire hand look like it’s at the correct angle with minimal effort. A thumb that’s just a wonky blob becomes dynamic id the nail is foreshortened and angled correctly. Shit’s wild

The reason why artist do this is to make the fingers appear sharper, which is sometimes an attractive trait on women.

I think what lots of ppl say in here is not that it just looks pretty, the way you show it’s anatomically correct, but drawing the nails more flatten gets a better esthetic look, even tho the anatomical way it’s more naturally pretty, for lots of artists, drawing the nails flat its more pretty bc of its elegance esthetics. (Just an opinion, sorry if there’s bad grammar.)

Now you're making me realizing there might be people that are into nails 💀 BTW it's depends, if you're drawing full body then there is no need to draw detailed nails but if it's a close up portrait that contain hands in it, then it could be done with details

I prefer drawing them flat for simpler drawings. When you need anatomical images then of course do it right but it disrupts the line to add them in unnecessarily

That curve is called the apex here to sprinkle tiny nuggets of info to tge internet as a ✨️nail tech/artist✨️

Yes different styles completely disregard this, yes nails can be more flat, he’s just saying this is a mistake sometimes done when going for is style

Flat nails are a more stylized way to draw them the slight curve is anatomically correct but either works it honestly depends on your style and what your trying to draw for if you want a more realistic approach then this is probably how you should draw them but if your just drawing anime or another type of cartoon style then either way works
