    I saw this in the theatre, and to be honest, I hated it because it gave an F U to the fans of the show. The show was all about the team. This movie made Jim Phelps the bad guy and killed off his team. I didn't watch another MI movie until MI4.

    Cruise is just a phenomenal action actor. His willingness to go that extra mile to get some impossible shots, it's really admirable. On top of that, you don't really have anyone who is as consistently good in everything he does, be it comedy or drama or whatever.

    The reason I've always heard for the sequels being more action-oriented (and thus so different from this one) was that a lot of people complained that the story in the first movie was too complicated to follow. But just like Chris says, what's wrong with that? Not overly complicated by any means, just more complex than the average movie-goer wants to deal with, I guess. You can tell MI2 made a concerted effort to keep things super simple.

    Having Emilio Estevez in the beginning of the movie was a really smart move, at the time Emilio was a pretty big star and had his own following, so as the audience saw him they think, Oh this is an Emilio Estevez movie, then he dies suddenly and unceremoniously, it sets up the movie very well, it makes you feel that you don't know what to expect.....Kathryn Bigelow did the same thing casting Guy Pierce for the opening scene in the Hurt Locker..

    This is still not only my favorite Mission Impossible film, but one of my favorite spy films, and one of my favorite action films. While the other MI movies are solid (except MI2) they have started to become a bit more typical summer blockbuster action in tone (although very well done), while this movie feels more espionage focused and smart. It's also the one movie of the franchise where Ethan isn't heralded like some kind of legend super spy by his peers. He's just another asset among other IMF team members, and not so seemingly invulnerable. Not to mention the movie is filmed spectacularly.

  • @nikocross7673

    @nikocross7673

    9 жыл бұрын

    lasthavoc Yeah the first Mission Impossible is a pretty good espionage spy movie. It actually kind of reminds of the movie Enemy of the State with the tension, suspense and the protagonist on the run. MI1 is the best one in the series but I like the other ones except for the 2nd one. I hope that Rogue Nation will bring some of that suspense back with notably a better threat and villain, as the trailers, it seems like there's more at stake this time. Ghost Protocol was fun but it had a bland villain and I didn't get a true sense that things were at stake and true to it's title the Missions didn't feel like they were near to impossible for Ethan and company to do.

  • @lasthavoc

    @lasthavoc

    9 жыл бұрын

    Yea, don't get me wrong, I like MI3 and Ghost Protocol. But while they're very well done summer blockbusters, they've become more about cool set pieces, and action, rather than than smart espionage thrillers supplemented by action. The entire first act of the original MI when they're in Prague, and being set up is one of the most riveting and perfect spy scenarios I've seen in a film. When Hunt asks Kittredge about the other IMF team and realized it was a mole hunt, I immediately wanted to watch that entire scene again to spot the other agents and see figure out what actually happened. It's a thinking audience's action film. But the sequels still great movies regardless.

    It's been nearly 20 years since Mission:Impossible was first released, and it's still my favourite one (so far) The film is a great espionage thriller that has utilizes traditional cold war spy thriller aesthetics and tries to update them to the post cold war world of confusion, betrayel, and loss. The set pieces are brilliant, with the stand out being in the breaking into the CIA vault, which pays homage to the quiet, suspence filled heist scenes of French crime thrillers such as Jules Dassin's Rififi and Jean Pierre Melville's The Red Circle. Rhames was born to play Luther, just like Cruise was born to play Hunt. With that exception the film's other characters get little to do as shown in the beginning of the film, Emilio Estevez and Kristin Scott Thomas being killed off so earlier on, whilst Jean Reno (then fresh from his starring role in Leon) just smirks, grins and behaves like a Frenchman. Overall an exciting spy yarn that came out just at the right time (The film was released a few months after Goldeneye, which kind of brought back a re-interest in 007 and the spy genre in general) The film is fantastic, however despite being based on the TV series, I actually found it to be far removed from the show. The plan and the mission are sorted out in twenty odd minutes, and we are instead left with the aftermath. In fact the film that really tries to follow the structure of the tv show was Inception. Just look at that film, the mission/offer, the recruiting of a team, the planning, the doubt, the mission, things not going according to plan. Sure Mission Impossible never used dream sharing, but the structure of the tv show really shows in Inception.

And not just because I didn't know it was that old, but also because its very well made, very realistic. Very smart too. I understood the part about quoting the Bible too (not sure if I'm right, though) Max said that Job wasn't known to quote it in his letters. Never said anything about him not quoting it at all. He clearly did know the Bible well because... he got his name from somewhere, right?

    My dad took me to see this when it premiered, we were in San Jose, Ca where I'm from. I never watched any of the Mission Impossible series but my dad did and loved them. So this meant a lot to him. Me on the other hand, just knew it was a new action movie based on a show with Tom Cruise and it looked good. Til this day, it's one of three films that I got to experience and by the end my heart stopped. It was a complicated film for me at the time, I was 11 and knew nothing of the show but holy shit. What an amazing movie. And now one of my favorite films and series of films. Red light, green light....explosion....Ethan flies towards the train and grabs on...then the helicopter explodes and Leon The Professional is done for...Ethan sees the helicopter coming at him and that blade stops right in front of his throat....still gives me chills...I love it. Absolutely love it! I've never at the time seen anything like that on the big screen. I'm so glad I got to share that experience with my dad.

What I really like about the "Mission: Impossible" franchise is that the movies are basically getting better (except that I (like most people) think that the first film is better than the second), which is rare, especially when there are more than three films in a series. "Ghost Protocol" was really good, and I think it will be difficult for "Rogue Nation" to be better, but I'm still hoping for that.

    I have a huge problem with the movie and the whole series: The Title. Mission impossible was never about one hero, it was about the team. If you see it removed from that, it is good. But mission Impossible? Not really

    I know everyone loves Ghost Protocol but for me..... this is the best Mission Impossible film. For all of the reasons you stated and more. I grew up watching the series with my family and when this came out it BLEW ME AWAY!!!!! It had all of the nostalgia from the series and it is truly a quintessential 90's action film that still holds up to this day. As always, keep up the amazing work!

    My thoughts exactly about the train sequence and the title theme; I only wish more movies still did this. It worked in the Tim Burton Batman movies, it worked in The Lord of the Rings trilogy (the Hobbiton theme when Sam carries Frodo in shadow of Mount Doom was GLORIOUS). I think a lot of film producers forget that films are performances, artistic works and not just approximations of real life. We respond to the structure of movies in just the same way as we do the structure of songs or of a novel.

    Hey Chris! I just wanted to say: Congrats, awesome review! I love this movie... the whole series, actually (yes, even the second one) And what I loved about the series is that No movie feels like a copy of the one before. All of them have different styles and different tones And I can enjoy them each individually. For instance, what you said about this one being one of your favorite action movies... I don't consider this one a "action" movie, to me it's more of a suspense heist/spy film. But that's just me. The second one on the other hand: very much an action movie. Keep it up dude, love your work.

    As always Chris a perfect review of a lost treasure. What I mean by that is most movie goers now are, like you said, spoon fed the plot and the direction in which the movie will go. Sure this is a "franchise movie" but, few people have seen the first. I've talked to many who've said, "that movie is corny and old." I disagree. This movie holds up well just like you said! You've said all that I've wanted to say about this movie so I won't repeat your words on my same views except I will say the rope scene is a staple in this franchise! Ghost rope scene had me almost gasping and I'm not afraid of heights! Again, great review Chris!

    This movie was great in the fact that it was different than the action we've seen in the past 4 movies. It was smarter and calmer. A little too smart at times and that bad helicopter cgi at the end but being cruise's first stunt expert role and the general age of the movie, I excuse these things, more so than 90s films that aged poorly rather than well. Most people have probably seen the newer films before thinking about seeing this one and that just hurts it because nobody was expecting the franchise to go this way when the first film was the big deal. For what it is, Id say its excellent.

I got to play it again as an adult and was able to beat it on the hardest difficulty. I had a lot of fun with it and plan on playing the PS1 version in the future. Another fun M:I game was on Lego Dimentions. The train sequence was almost as intense as the original scene. It was cool to hear how you enjoyed playing the N64 version. It doesn't get talked about a lot.

    Good review points. I first saw the movie in a theater in May 1996 at age 22, with almost no prior familiarity with the original tv series or the late '80s revival. My only major complaint is that the final bullet train action finale seems incongruous with the rest of the movie, as if Paramount dictated that it needed a big closing action sequence (which the trailer could also highlight) to make it look more like a summer action blockbuster than otherwise originally intended, or as most of the movie plays.
