Snaps down. I actually have one of these hats. I live in Georgia and I work outdoors. I chose this hat for the wide brim to keep my ears from getting sun burned.

I think the snaps are there for the sole purpose of dressing up as Jesse Ventura for Halloween. In all honesty though, I live in Arizona and our most humid days are still more dry than most places so I really appreciate this review.

I’d wear it down for max sun protection but if in the shade seems like sides up might be cool

You will likely get more sun protection with the flap down which I suspect is why you would wear the hat, especially one that is rated SPF 50.

I order both the ball cap and the bucket hat. One for me and my dad for when we are doing yard work. hopefully it works like it says it does.

how is the sizing on this? I have a fairly large dome (7.5). Does it seem tight\stretchable?

I like the way you did the review with comparisons with regular hats. That extra comparison was very helpful.

Think the snaps down will help protect better.

Just a random thought but I feel like if you had gotten the grey mission ball cap color instead maybe it would of stayed cooler longer since black draws in more more heat. That’s the main reason I got the gray color.

Very “Aussie” slightly British snapped up and more urban chic down as a bucket hat. Depends on who you want to be and what you want to protect. Either way a nice looking hat

Here is my question Sir- looking at “Boone” hats online, they show a blue band on the inside of the hats. Yet I have physically looked at the same hat(booney) at like Acadmey/Home Depot and there is no blue band. So, is there a difference that I don’t know?

What is the purpose of the 2 loops near the snaps on one side of the wide brimmed hat? Sunglasses holder?

They now state to wet, wring, wave in air to cool it and repeat when it dries. It’s just the material, water and how it breaths that keeps it cooler. I just bought the gray one yesterday. Black draws too much heat, so I got the lighter color. I always wear light colored clothes in the sun and heat. I have a white fishing shirt that is unreal cool. I wear boonies unsnapped.

I like both flaps up and flaps down!

These hats are great when its not too humid, because they operate by evaporation. Mission uses a thin material for the crown that allows water to be easily wicked up from the brim (which is designed to hold water until needed by the crown material). On dry days I would dunk the hat in the pool, wring it out (having water more sparse in the material promotes quicker evaporation, and thus cooling). The last step is to swing the hat back and force through the air, which really thins out the moisture at the top and sides of the crown, starting the turbo evaporative mode. On a dry day, the hat will generally retain water for an hour, and the whole time the hat isn't dry it's providing relief. Now the humid days. Ugghh .. as great as these are in dry climates, they reverse in the damp. There is very little evaporation when the atmosphere is already packed with water. No evap = no cooling. Even worse, that Mission hat which is designed to easily part with moisture on dry days, becomes a moisture magnet on humid days. Put it on dry, and it will get wet because it will start wicking water from the air around you. Before long the hat will be heavy and wet, dripping from the brim as if it a rainstorm. Miserable. Overall, I doubt (at 61 yrs old) I would have survived working outdoors this last Texas summer without it. Thank you Mission :)

I agree with your wife. Plus, you eliminate the shade a risk burning your ears with the hat snapped.

That's more or less exactly what I was going to say. I think it looks a bit goofy snapped up on the sides too. Just my opinion though.

With the sides snapped it won't do much for your ears. I think the snaps are more for rainy days to allow tha water drain to the back of hat.

@@Jeffreviews4u - You are welcome! I get sunburn easy so that's where my thoughts usually take me first these days when it comes to hats. Skin cancer is becoming an issue. My doctor freeze these pre-cancer skin problems on my arms and Bald head. Lol so long sleeve shirts so my skin doesn't dry out in sun and wind and wide brim hats so my neck and ears don't get anymore sunburn.

Snaps down for sure! Protect you ears neck and face from the sun! But I do like it with the snaps up! Nice videos!

Should use light colors, not dark. I believe the baseball cap has a front panel where a logo go of the special cooling material. I hate that side up look, totally unfunctional, doesn't keep sun off face. Bending one side was an Australian thing in the military because during drilling the rifle barrel hit the hat.

I wear mine snaps up unless I'm in the sun. Then I keep them down

Flaps up when wearing ear muffs for hearing protection. Flaps down to keep sun off of you. Up or down, depends on the situation. If the sun is not beating down flaps up.

Snapped up has a Rhodesian vibe.

Like usually hats are too small for me and I need adjustable ones, never tried a bucket hat before tho

If I wear a wide brim hat, like the bucket hat, I keep the brim unsnapped

Snaps down simply keeps your ears from burning therefore cooler.

I would suggest snaps down to cover the ears. I’ve seen too many men recently having surgery on their ears due to cancer from sun exposure.

The Arctic wide rim is so much more stable and less floppy. It’s the better choice for the hot son. I can’t stand the floppiness of the mission style . It looks stupid too.

Snaps down. Looks too small for your head with snaps up. BTW, all of these fabric "cooling products" (towels, hats, headbands) work based on the concept of evaporative cooling. None of them will work very well in a humid environment, because humidity inhibits evaporation.
