► “There is a mountain in the distant West that, sun-defying, in its deep ravines displays a cross of snow upon its side.” - Henry Wadsworth.
Mount of the Holy Cross peaked the interest of masses when it was first photographed in 1873 by W.H. Jackson. The mountain attracted those wishing to pray from all over the United States and it gained so much visitation that in 1929 it was declared a national monument. These days though, it is mostly climbers and hikers who visit the site, and because the number of visitors dwindled over the years, the mountain lost its monument status in 1950.
This mountain has also become somewhat famous for the disappearances that have taken place on it, which we’re going to get into in this video. This mountain is actually surrounded by a lot of folklore too and at the center of that are disappearances and people passing away unexpectedly. Specifically, the folklore references those who would go to the site in groups and one of the individuals would split up from the group to go pray alone. When the person didn’t return the others would go to retrieve them only to find that they are no longer with them. Of course, I can’t speak on the validity of folklore, but it is interesting nonetheless.

Hey all! I hope that you're doing well. There's some unusual ones in here so do share your thoughts on them, Michelle's disappearance especially I think felt very off given that she was never found. The next video should be ready for next week hopefully. It might be a bit different to normal because there's a disappearance that I want to cover and I'm not sure the best way of going about it yet given that it was very recent.

Michelle's dissaperance is odd. Kathleen's story is so strange too. Any ideas on why people are so confused when they are found? Everytime there is a survivor I get excited to hear their story but it's pretty much never been more than a mundane story and faulty memory.

Attempted to climb this in February 2019. I started the hike at 1am to have enough time to make the summit and get back before the sunset when bad weather and extreme colds kick in. I made it about 3 miles into the trail when I had a gutwrenching feeling I was being watched. Mind you it's 3am and and there is no fresh tracks in front of me or another car parked at the TH indicating someone else attempting the summit. I suspected it was just my body telling me to go back to the warmth and stop hiking so I pushed on and put on a podcast I downloaded to drown out the noise of nature around me. I stopped at a turn maybe a mile later to take off my snowshoes and pee when I heard a whistling noise off in the distance., I paused my podcast and listened close while I peed and 30 seconds later I heard a distinct whistling but extremely close and the feeling from earlier suddenly returned in that moment.. my only instinct was to run. I left my snow shoes and took off back to the car looking behind me every 10 seconds. I thought I was going to pass out by the time I got back to the trail head from exhaustion and fear. I sat in my car and really questioned myself. I haven't been night hiking since. There is something out there is the mountains I'm certain of it.

Bear with me because the memory is bit foggy but I was told that it's a evil spirit or a little person trying to lure you away with whispers or whistling. I was told to never follow the sound and immediately head back to safety. You will be taken away and never seen again.

I think the watch hanging in a tree is easily explained, as if you find lost property when walking you usually hang it in plain sight for anyone who comes back looking for what they dropped - for example hanging a scarf or glove on a fence/gate/tree. You see it all the time when dog walking.

Bad weather can really mess a person up, especially one unfamiliar with a mountain. I once “found” a 15 year old boy crashing and stumbling through the woods about halfway down Mt. Monadnock in NH. A thunder burst had suddenly popped up, really soaking the rocks and leaves. Being very familiar with the mountain, I took shelter under a ledge for maybe 15 minutes, before returning to the trail. After a half hour is when I located the teen. He’d been “lost” he told me, for several hours, wandering downhill after he’d gotten tired of the “boring” trail. His intention was go to the summit without a trail! To make a long story short, I gently scolded him for his folly, and we hiked back to my campsite. I gave him a pb&j sandwich, some iced tea, and we hiked the three miles out to my truck, where I took him to the State Park Ranger Station on the other side of mountain. The ranger was relieved to see him, and radioed to the search teams who’d been out for an hour to return. It seems he’d left his parents and brothers campsite in the state campground for a walk, decided to go a ways on the main trail, then got the notion to make his own way to the top. Instead, he’d probably gone more around than up when I found him. (This was in the 1970s, well before gps or cellphones.).

So just like with the question of why does the weather change, why do people go missing when the moon is at either total or 0 illumination?

I would like to share a few thoughts about search dogs and the missing in general but first let me say I really enjoy your videos probably my fav out of the many youtubers reporting on the subject. OK I think the parks could do some education maybe in the form of signs at trail heads and even educate the rangers on some simple things to share with hikers in general conversation if not in a formal class. Search dogs go off of your scent so if you become lost and you insist on trying to self rescue instead of staying put then I would recommend constantly breaking large branches and rubbing items in the woods on your bare skin to leave as strong of a scent trail for the dogs as you can, breaking branches not only leaves markers for yourself to indicate you are walking in circles or to lead yourself back the way you came but it leaves visuals for human trackers and it puts your scent on the branches for the dogs to track, keep in mind to do this to lower branches as dogs are likely to be low to the ground, also if you become lost and feel you cant stay put and prepare for an overnight stay which is what you should do and you have walked over an hour you should face the facts that you are most likely walking away from safety and now stop and prepare for the wait, preparing for a stay accomplishes two things it increases your chance of survival and it helps pass the time, it is almost unbearable to sit and wait on rescue if you dont have something to keep your mind off of your dire situation this is just a couple of things that will make the searchers jobs easier. I know there has to be a lot more easy to do things to make a rescue more likely one last opinion I have is on the problem highly intellectual as well as highly skilled people have is their ability to realize soon enough that they are in a situation that is more than they can handle. One common thing I notice is when bodies are found they are miles from where the searchers are searching or they are found in already searched areas firstly never underestimate how far a person can travel or how rugged of a terrain can be traversed when they are fighting for survival secondly when they are found in already searched areas it tells me that the lost are walking in circles maybe very large circles but still circles. FYI I got myself lost when I was a teenager hiking NF in NC with friends we went off trail to hike to a large rock on the side of the mountain we could see from the trail probably a mile we made it there fine and when we decided to go back to the trail we made a race of it, I now know this whole thing was stupid but I was 16 and indestructible after realizing I was lost I kept looking for the trail even climbing trees trying to get my bearings to no avail when my friends realized I wasn't coming back they came back from the car to look for me and I heard them yelling at that point I was only about a hundred feet from the trail and totally lost.

Regarding being struck by lightning, when I was 8 years old there was a boy about my age who was playing left field in a little league baseball game. During the game, something strange occurred in that even though it was an overcast day, there was no rain or thunder until a bolt of lightning came out of the blue struck this boy. This is according to the spectators watching the game as reported by the local newspaper. People rushed to him and a paramedic was on scene very shorty (there was a hospital less than 3 miles away). He survived but here are some interesting points about what happened to him: the lightning struck him on the crown of his head - we know this because his baseball cap had about a 4" diameter scorched hole on top. All the metal on his clothing such as zipper, buttons, belt buckle, ring and metal cleats (many brands of baseball shoe have these) were melted. The metal chain necklace he wore with old WW2 US Army style "dog tags" had completely disintegrated and the dog tags melted. I know this because the news article reported where the chain necklace came in contact with his skin were burn marks and, yet, no sign of the necklace were found under his shirt. As I said, he survived and I remember reading about it in the newspaper which also had a picture of him hold the burnt baseball cap for the camera shot.

@Paul Wood 🤔 and then claimed she was a missing persons and creating an alibi by telling them that he felt off, took the wrong trail etc etc.... . That's actually not that far fetched. It would be a good way to take suspicion off yourself. It's something to think about, and could mean quite a few of these missing persons were actually murdered by the persons they went with.

I hiked the Halo Ridge route that Michelle disappeared on this past July with a couple of friends. Not a hike I would ever attempt on my own. We started hiking at 4am and finished at 6pm. The most beautiful and challenging hiking I've ever done. Very trecherous boulder and snow fields even in Mid - Summer. One slip could lead to a several hundred or thousand foot fall. I live within and very short distance of Mount of the Holy Cross and have hiked all around the wilderness it's in. One of the most stunning mountains I've ever laid my eyes on.

I am shocked that the park service can't make you open your tent up when searching for a missing person. It is also really strange to me that you wouldn't open your tent unless you had something to hide. I think I would have left some people there to wait for them to come out.

It almost seems like induced hypnosis would be called for in order to learn WTF happened in these cases where people are found but aren’t sure how they got there, etc. Assets are deployed at great cost to find these folks so for the sake of understanding or even preventing further cases it would seem like someone should be a little more interested. Or maybe they know already, ergo “can’t recall how they got to the impossible location they were found in.”

In response to what you said @8:44 If Michelle said she needed to stop for a break, it could be that once she caught her breath and rested a but, she got a second wind and tried to reach the summit or decided to slowly start back down the trail, assuming her hiking partner would catch up to her. Then something happened to her. I have stopped on a trail thinking that I couldn't go any further only to finish the hike after resting for a bit. It isn't that weird.

Information about James was far off. I was on the final search and rescue with Vail County and I knew James. He did not acclimate to the attitude. He also did not attempt Mt. Holly Cross as he was not in shape to make that kind of assent. Instead, he wen to Holy Cross city where his camp and some of his remains were found. The search did not continue the following spring or summer because of heavy snow and the mountain was closed down to hikers. It is usual for animals to feed on remains. Although James was an experienced backpacker and an Eagle scout he did not have a spot device and obviously suffered an embolism from not acclimating to the high altitude. The only mystery here is that the sheriff of Vail county showed that all camp sites had been searched in Holy Cross city. I saw the GPS waypoints. I had also indicated to SAR that he would probably be found at a camp site in Holy Cross city. I took my own people up the following year only to be turned away because the snow conditions were very heavy. RIP James Nelson

Very true, I think that's at least a little odd. The dilemma I often have is that I want to acknowledge and talk about that, but it quickly veers off straight into massive speculation and potential accusations. The police in the end didn't suspect him and because there's no evidence present, it's difficult to really know what to say about it. I can only hope that he was questioned thoroughly, and to be fair the news reports seemed to indicate that was the case

@@MissingVoidTV Last summer, a Slovene woman dissapeared on an Adriatic island called Mljet (Croatia), a gorgeous island, very preserved, with a national park, low populated. She was an avid hiker (but 63 yrs old) and she followed a trail around a beautiful lake (part of the national park) on the island that leads up to a hill (256 m) and went ahead, leaving her husband for about (only!) 20m behind as he couldn't keep up. And simply - vanished. What followed was the largest search operation in the history of Croatia, with helicopters, 62 dogs and numerous search teams and experts. And the weather did NOT take the turn for the worst. It remained sunny and warm/hot. (We had a great vacation nearby, on the mainland, a week later, and saw helicopters hoovering above the said island.) Her family even posted a reward of 20,000 € for any info about their mom. But to the present day nothing has been found. Nothing at all. The husband mentioned a "mysterious" German man who supposedly accompanied them while travelling to the island on a commercial boat for a daily trip, and then also when they started their hike. However, that German guy disappeared as well. Weird, huh? Here's the link, it's in Slovene, but Google Translate might help. www.slovenskenovice.si/novice/slovenija/almo-iscejo-ze-leto-dni-323971

Hey Top, My favorite video of your's since the Yuba Boys video. I have asked DP a few times why doesn't he cover the Yuba City boys and he never responds. There is something eerie about this mountain. You had mentioned Jaryd Atedero when talking about James Nelson's disappearance. The only physical remains of Jaryd that were found was his skull cap also and one of his teeth. These two findings disturb me greatly. You are the first person I have noticed who also made a connection with these two cases that I have seen. To me, whatever is preying on people looks for opportunity and sometimes manipulates people and their minds to get them to say and do strange things. I think it also has something to do with brain chemistry. Think about it. Compare the "Predators" to a mosquito. A mosquito can detect an animal or human from a couple of miles away. They detect mammals by our exhalation of carbon dioxide. If a mosquito can detect us from far away, what more could or can these "Predators" do. At the end of Missing 411 the Hunted movie, there is a very interesting and disturbing encounter a woman had with an unknown entity in Lima, Ohio. Later on she seemed to be in some kind of trance, and took a very interesting picture of something with long hair hiding behind a tree. What is most interesting is that her husband is one of the world's leading experts on a certain kind of optical sciences. He said that her camera phone was re-programmed, remotely and changed to a pixel size that was impossible for her camera to take the picture of this entity. With all that being said, keep up the great work Top! Your research, dedication, performance and professionalism shows through every one of your videos. I absolutely love everyone of them. Is there any chance you may do one about Bigfoot/Sasquatch? I don't think you have done one of those yet. It would be a great one I am sure. Anyway, thanks and looking forward to your next one.

it wasn't a entity with long hair hiding behind a tree 🤣 it was a cloaked translucent entity that moved THROUGH the trees she took a photo of it. And the yuba City boys story has been done and overdone to death, there's nothing mysterious at all about that story unfortunate as it is

That guy should have listened to his 6th sense warning him to stay away. He even ignored the signs like leaving his essentials behind. They should have stayed home.

Growing up near Holy Cross and much spookier Notch Mountain, we always heard that there was a B29 that crashed into Notch Mountain, never found, and many have gone missing looking for it

So I wonder how many of these cases of people vanishing while just standing there might actually be things like sink holes or things like that. In snowstorms, often times areas off the trail get deep snow, and it may look level to the trail, but actually be much deeper. Near or be earth trees, where someone might rest, the piled snow actually creates pockets that can literally swallow a person and fold them into a position they can’t get out of almost at once, without a trace. As the snow melts, the remains are eaten and scattered. Michelle could have stepped right off the trail and leaned against a tree or rock, and just been literally swallowed

Alot of them have, and little good it's done. Most often the device goes AWOL and is never found, nothing is heard on them, no distress alert is sounded, nothing. GPS walkie talkie is not going to be deterent for what is taking these people

David Paulides recommends a personal locator beacon; like an aircraft's "black box," but for hikers and campers.

If you're on a mountain above the tree line, you could easily be hit by lightning since you'd be the tallest object and would essentially be a human lightning rod.

I believe there are creatures that live in the granite somehow but explaining that is to crazy to make sense but it's a much stranger world than we think and that's for sure.

People have been believing there are creatures in boulder fields and granite since at least the Middle Ages. And the ancient Greeks were terrified of the wilderness believing evil lived there. It's basically a long held belief by humanity that something occupies our wilderness.
