Miss Grenada, Jennifer Hosten. Miss World 1970, she's one of my favorite Miss World winner. She is a class of her own. Being a flight attendant, gave her an edge over other competitors.

Well apparently the first prime minister of Grenada was a member of judging panel, and he persuaded the other judges to vote for Jennifer! I don't BELIEVE that for a second! You can tell me to vote one way, but you can't vote FOR THEM! And I'm STILL confused as to why Bob Hope crowned her when Miss World 1969 was in attendance

Great image and show, those were the days Miss WORLD was so elegant and no like the modern version of the contest today , by the way Miss WORLD 1969 never crowned Miss WORLD 1970 on the show. I think the crown is spectacular I wonder what happened to it, most of crowns used from the 60s till today are great, but I like the golden one the most , I wonder who owns it and what was it made of.

That was due to a racist hate crime that prevailed for 43 years. Its name? Apartheid. As for the protests, I'm not against the likes of Miss World at all. Nobody was (or is) ever forced to participate in anything of the kind.

@@andresclark1983 Así es, esto empezó porque en el 69, Penny Plummer no pudo entregar la corona por actividades laborales, entonces se le pido a Omar Sharif coronar a Eva Rueber-Staier. Pero en 1970 Eva si se encontraba esa noche, pero para no perder esa tradición se le invito a Bob Hope para coronar a Miss Mundo.

Grenada participated 3x at Miss World. After winning the title, they never join again until 1996 (Unplaced). The last time they competed was 2007 (Top 16).

Miss Africa South is from South Africa, but was created is miss in the contest to allow black contestants from South Africa to participate for the Apartheid regime!

Yes, Jennifer Josephine Hosten is the first black Miss World. And South Africa is white while Africa South is black, both South Africans.

I think non-whites were not allowed to enter the original white-only promoted pageant, so they chose a Miss Africa South. In the early or late Eighties, non-whites were chosen as finalists for the main contest, but the first POC won in 1992.

seriously. This crown used to be known as fool's crown because of its design.

I really liked Miss the United Kingdom She was so beautiful. Unfortunately she missed the crowd that year.

There was also some controversy surrounding this: from Bob being heckled, to Miss Sweden being "cheated" out of the title

Well, this method has been used since the first years of the creation of the Miss World, and was last used in 1988, since in 1989 all the finalists and the continental queens they remained on stage

At that time, South Africa was experiencing one of its most tense moments, Apartheid, where whites were granted more rights than people of color, then Morley (creator of the contest) had an idea, to send from South Africa a white candidate, and a person of color (Miss Africa South) But this was not much to the liking of the people, because as of Miss World 1978, no candidate from South Africa would be admitted, for Apartheid itself. In 1976 some candidates tried to boycott the competition, as there was no Miss Black from the United States or from any other country.

There was a huge controversy in Miss Grenada winning, as many people charged that Eric Morley, in response to the criticism of letting in two contestants from South Africa, manipulated the rules as they went along to make Grenada the winner. It was revealed that 4 of the 9 judges gave Miss Sweden #1 ranking but yet she ended up in fourth place. I have always thought the Morleys had too much of a say and influence in the selection of the winner ( the overwhelming number of European and former territory winners for example). At Miss Universe, there would be no dispute as the contestant with the lowest rank score wins. Great that a black winner was crowned but in the end, unlike Janelle Commissiong at Miss Universe, it was a victory manipulated to appease the loudest people.

You can tell the body ideal was much different back then from what it is now. Nowadays these ladies would have been skinnier and showing toned muscles following a demanding workout routine including pilates, weight lifting, ballet, boxing and so forth. Back in the good old days a bit of dancing was considered sufficient to get into shape.

At that time it was very common that the winner had to be crowned by a celebrity, as is Bob Hope Just 50 Years ago, in 1970 ... The cases of 1966 or 1972 should not be confused, since in 1966, Lesley Langley did not want to crown her successor, due to problems with Morley, and in 1972, Lúcia Petterle did not crown her successor because her arm was injured and she had been plastered! The 1960s and 1970s were the most beautiful of the Contest! ♥
