Any of the other four finalists would’ve been a better Miss USA than Miss New Mexico. Her performance at Miss Universe was boring and uninspiring. She came off as arrogant and entitled. Not saying the others would’ve won, as Miss Sweden seemed to have it in the bag, but perhaps they could’ve made the top five.

I was stunned when New Mexico won, I thought "what are they thinking??!!"

Amazing how much has changed in 40 years at Miss USA, since 1984.

Years where beauty was everywhere! My God, how beautiful and competitive they are all 🤩

I think if Miss West Virginia had won, she would have placed higher at MU than Miss New Mexico.

The following are my TOP 5... West Virginia District of Colombia Oklahoma Oregon North Carolina

Personally would have crowned miss west Virginia. Missouri came across more of a miss America to me. You could tell yhe judges fell in love with mai in her interview. She was unstoppable after that.

West virginia was the best! She looks like a real miss universe!

they really were a league above the rest, Oregon's swimsuit score SHOCKED me, i thought they meant 9.6 right?

Ruth Zacarias's styling had matured and made her look even more glamourous for this edition. It's sad that she did not even make the semis.

The Top 5 serenade by Neil Sedaka was so beautiful! I loved West Virginia... thought Oregon should have made Top 5.

It was rigged as what happened in the 1984 MsU where SWEDEN blew the final Q&A! I don’t know … maybe the same set of STUPID judges were on both pageants⁉️

New Mexico had the best final answer. I think she won it after she delivered her answer.

I thought DC and Missouri gave the best answer. West Virginia her answer was a little shaky. New Mexico also a little shaky. Tennessee was good. Overall, I'd pick Missouri as Miss USA with WV as first runner-up.

And I think Mai won the crown after delivering her final answer. She arguably had the best answer. The judges liked her personality.

I liked Missouri best. She was great in interview. Texas in swimsuit looked very awkward and ungainly coming down the stairs.

You are absolutely right Without realizing it, the pageant, in it's quest for diversity and empowerment, has become more racist and narrow minded than ever before.

Julie should of been miss universe, Lorraine looked like a child and Julie was a woman. Lorraine was so shy. Miss universe catered to more innocent girls, that’s why usa has so many runner ups. Julie, Judi, Amanda and Deborah all should of won but lost to Miss Universe winners

Agree with Deborah (70). Amanda (73) is a tie with Margarita Moran. But Lorraine Downes (83) and Margaret Gardiner (78) did deserve to win. Especially nowadays I am grateful that Lorraine won.

Wow how time has changed! More than 50 contestants, none of them had dark skin. It's very sad. Non-white girls simply had no chance back then.

Well, yes and no. I understand what you are trying to say but don’t forget that the winner New Mexico is actually half-Asian, so she is not totally white at all. Being an Asian myself, I felt so happy and proud when I watched her win the crown that evening on TV. I suppose that she cracked the glass ceiling a little inspiring other non-white girls that they can also become Miss USA too. One year later in 1985, there were 4 non-whites Miss USA contestants and another year later, bi-racial District of Columbus Halle Berry became 1st runner-up, so things were looking up fast.

Bob Barker’s time is up in 3 years time as his contract with both Ms USA and MsU is about to end, his legendary rudeness shows and who cares if he reached the ripe old age of 99 before he keeled-over. There’s lots of capable emcees anyway with good behavior to take over his place anytime he’s not needed anymore. Good riddance to a sex pervert anyway!

I have news for you. Miss USA 1984, Mai Shanley from New Mexico is Asian American. Connecticut and Hawaii were not white. What you really wanted to say is that there were no black contestants in that year pageant.
