The messages from both Nadine and Leila are very true and reflective of the sentiment in most Asian countries. The world needs more of these kind of people to bring awareness on negative perceptions and thinkings that are brought about by social class.

Indonesian women (and men) are really diverse in skin color. From dark brown skin to porcelain skin. Most Dayakese and Minahasan have light skin. Many people of Sumatera and Sundanese have light yellow skin. Javanese, Balinese, Bugis, Sasak, ect mostly have medium yellow to light brown skin. Papuan, East Nusa Tenggara and Moluccas have dark brown skin. I don't generalize, I'm Javanese and many people in here has really light skin although not majority. I myself has medium yellow skin.

no idea why Nadine didnt make it to top 15. probably at that time she was lacking of confidence being amongst all international queens. she was one of huge favorites. pretty, tan skin, good public speaking, good English. if Nadine competed in Miss Universe under IMG like nowadays, she surely would placed. im sure.

@misskiya being Indonesian I know what Nadine is trying to say. Here in our country you are put down if you have dark skin, and you're right, it is "undereducated" to hold on to such ideals but that's something we're trying to change here and Leila is a big part of the process. When people saw Leila come to Indonesia, a lot said "Miss Universe is black?" they have their own set of ideals but we're a developing country. Nadine tried to break those boundaries by wearing a tan to miss universe.

Leila is a beautiful black woman and she is making an amazing representation, and truth be told, she is not using her title as expected. Like to be honest she is not being that memorable like Xieman or Stefania, She is just so beautiful that I wish she could see that and get confidence and use her reign and prove that she is the best!

I am so lost. Just because I have light skin means I am successful? Since when? Don't get me wrong, I love Miss Universe! I am so happy she won the crown but I am disapointed with this video. All women should have the right to win Miss Universe whether you are white, black, asian, hispanic. It shouldn't matter. I am so pale and I want to win Miss Universe, but just because I'm white doesn't mean that I have a better chance to win.

Indonesia have beautiful women but I think they should stop choosing mixed (eurasian) over local girls as their Misses because that just supports the idea that light skin girls have more chance of winning/are more beautiful. Miss Indonesia only needs to be a bit tall, have a nice natural charisma, have a great smile, have good communication skills (in indonesian and english)... Btw Japan won in 2007 so yes the competition becomes more open now.
