My favorite Miss Universe has always been Miss Universe 1979! So very beautiful! The Miss Universe pageant was sooo much better back in the 1970's and 1980's! So was Miss U.S.A.!

This was a special Miss Universe year and edition, because the top 2 were the best of the best for 1979 pageantry. Miss Venezuela won Miss Universe, while Miss Bermuda won Miss World!!! These two beautiful women dominated the 1979 pageant year.

In 1974, Miss Universe was won by Miss Spain, first runner-was Miss Wales, Helen Morgan. November of that year Miss Wales won Miss World. After 4 days, she was forced to resign because the media discovered she had an 18-month old son. Ironically, Miss Universe 1974, Amparo Muñoz resigned after just 6 months of her reign. She refused to travel to Japan for an official engagement. So there both the biggest winners of 1974 beauty pageants, Miss Universe and Miss World were forced to resign.

The prettiest women that year were, in alphabetical order, Belgium, Bermuda, Canada, Chile, England, Greece, Singapore, Sweden, and Venezuela. The winner, Miss Venezuela, was born on the same day I was, but she is three years older. I remember watching these pageants when I was growing up and could never figure out how the judges made their selections and whether there were politics or "fixes" involved, but this particular year, I remember thinking that the winner, Miss Venezuela, was just stunning. Based on beauty alone, my top 5 would have been Venezuela, England, Bermuda, Sweden and Greece.

I thought that Bermuda was prettier than Venezuela, but Venezuela's gown is the most beautiful I have ever seen. Bermuda later on that year became Miss World.

One of the best groups of semifinalists ever. Miss Bermuda was so clever and charming, one of the best MU interviews I've ever seen. Miss Germany was endearing, so honest and funny despite her lack of an interpreter, she was quite brave to try it in English. Miss Brazil was so exotic looking and girlishly cute, but Miss Venezuela stole the show with her regal, Jackie Kennedy-like bearing, and quick-wjtted sense of humor. I'm 53, and still think Maritza Sayalero is the best Miss Universe of all time! Such a shame that the pageant has degenerated into a tacky "Victoria's Secret" fashion shoot now, with all the girls looking the same...(skinny body, long straight dark hair, clownish makeup, and the requisite hand on the hip stance); Miss Holland is Indian, Miss Germany is Turk/Croatian, Miss Sweden is black African, Miss Phillipines is an L.A. valley gal. They all look the same, oh well, hail diversity!

The stage may have been beautiful but it wasn’t very strong. It collapsed under the weight of so many reporters, sending various contestants to the hospital.

Venezuela was past her time! She was so beautiful and gown was breathtaking!

One my career highlights, being chosen to voice the Miss Universe, world telecast. Got to work with great television talent. I still remember my heart racing as New York City counted in the start of the show. It was all live at about 8am Perth time.

It seems that you are really young and dont have much information, MARTIZA SAYALERO had plastic surgery (nose job) months before the Miss Venezuela Competition, she HAS ALWAYS RECOGNIZED this in many tv interviews. And that was nothing compared to the surgeries the girls were getting later after her in the next 40 years, in 1979 when she said she had a nose job, some countries started to get surgeries to their potential contestants

Miss Universe 1979, Maritza Sayalero from Venezuela is pretty, smart and witty but Froken Sverige (Miss Sweden) gave a good fight. Binibining Pilipinas (Miss Philippines) 1979, Criselda Cecilio, is a stunner too.

It very difficult for the judges to determine the best contestant for Miss Universe when each of them are given different questions; some of which are difficult and the others are rather easy. If they all are to be judged from the same standpoint, shouldn't they be asked the same question and then scored based on the best answer?

If this were the case, future contestants would try to model their answers on the high scores of previous years. If the question were the same across the board, it would be quite easy to figure out what the judges are looking for.

One of the best presentations ever. I hope Miss Universe will do something to make it as grand as in the 70's and 80's. The past 15 years or so was just so so, I mean not as grand as in the 70', 80's and 90's

+Miryam Wagner Argentina debe haber tenido una gran entrevista con el jurado y muy buen puntaje en traje de gala durante las preliminares para haber logrado clasificar entre las 12 despues de haber tenido un puntaje tan bajo en traje de baño preliminar... saco menor puntuacion que Colombia y muy por debajo de Uruguay y Peru y ninguna de las 3 logro clasificar entre las semifinalistas!...

Yes, it would be great to see Bermuda return to compete, as well as be represented at all of the major pageants. Bermuda is a country (yes, it is one no matter what) with beautiful women, people with a special charm.

Usted dice eso porque ella ganó, pero si no fuera otra, porque había candidatas con potenciales para ganar, lo que veo en ella es que es muy sencilla y simpática no sólo es belleza, y que ahora las mis no son asi, hulmide, censilla, simpatica,ahora son falsas, nada mas es belleza que tienen

En cuanto a Miss Venezuela ella era una mujer sencilla desenvuelta en sus respuestas y sobretodo tenia elegancia y mucha humildad merecía la corona de Miss Univers

Irony is that, miss universe from Venezuela is only a runner up but defeated miss Bermuda. Miss Bermuda joined miss world and won against the winner of miss Venezuela 😁😁😁

Those are 2 different pairs of shoes. At the Miss Venezuela, they choose 3 girls: one goes to Miss Universe, one to Miss World, and one to Miss International, so the one who defeated Bermudas at MU is NOT the same one, whom Bermudas defeated at MW. You can see that clearly in the year 1981: Irene Sáez, Vzla., won MU, and Pilín León, also Vzla., won MW. As you can see, Bermudas 1979 DID NOT defeat the Vzlan MU, but another Vzlan, who represented Vzla at MW.
