@@electrictroy2010incorrect. The Engineer is a mixed race. He's actually written as a French-Vietnamese character. In fact, his casting was one of Miss Saigon's controversies during its starting run. He also wore some prosthetics and makeup to make him "look more Asian".
great quality
There is only ONE Jonathan Pryce, what a talent! And oh that singular voice...!

The Engineer reminds me of the Mask.
Who's the actor doing the introduction? I can't think of his name but know I should know who that is.

@@electrictroy2010 The character is supposed to be Half-Vietnamese. Originally the only reason Pryce played the role was because AEA revoked their decision when Cameron Mackintosh would rather cancel the show than Pryce not be cast. He's even said in recent years he regrets his actions

A Caucasian in the role of an Asian is definitely by no means the best for the role. Especially since they had to force said Caucasian from wearing prosthetic eye makeup when it transferred to Broadway. Truly tone-deaf and tasteless casting.

@@GalaxyNexus1 it's not an Asian role. The original production booklet calls the Engineer 'Eurasian' not Vietnamese. Strictly speaking he's meant to be half white so an Asian actor is no more authentic than a white actor.
Jon Jon Briones is miles better , ig they were just giving out Tonies to anybody back then ☠️

Give me these 80s musicals over the post-2000s "Movie: the Musical" any day.
It's not just the whitewashing that's problematic - I still don't understand why this show spends so much time with this character - he's loathsome, and he doesn't deserve this much attention. He just proves that even though the show's writers are claiming to be against sleaze, raunch and exploitation, they need it to sell their show. The Engineer should have been treated as a minor character all along.

He’s the only comic character of the show, and he’s highly subversive of American imperial mindset. The engineer (his name is a clue) has the Marty McFly function in the narrative:a static lead who is uniquely positioned to work out the logistical factors between the shows more dramatically compelling leads, while working towards his own agenda. The show almost makes a parody of his transparency as a plot device. That said, it’s strange that he has more lines than the lead. Jonathan Price taking the role is probably a factor there.

@@avercado4132 right race? Engineer is mixed French-Vietnamese, if you want authenticity you specifically need to cast a white-Vietnamese mixed actor.
