maybe of the successful actresses of the silent era and the golden age speak highly of their mothers, including Ginger Rogers, Shirley Temple, and Angela Lansbury. Those who had stage mothers or no mothers like Judy Garland or Joan Crawford had loads of personal problems.

In the interview she said she was born 10 weeks before the century. I'm assuming she meant 1899. However she was actually born in 1893. Sadly she died just 9 months short of her hundredth birthday. Still an amazing lady who lived an amazing life.

If I need to re-think Lillian and start remembering that she was born in 1899 I think I'd collapse, I'll keep thinking it was 1893, close to Mary's 1892 ❤

The Godfather of film and movies Mr. D.W. Griffin would be 149 now. People don't realize this remarkable extraordinary women was about to turn 100 before she died that same year in 1993... Like Betty White, she came so close a few months shy from her 100th birthday in October that year...she unfortunately passed away in February of 1993 at 99.

There’s was always speculation about her true age. Most people don’t believe 1893 was her actual birth year. It’s believed her mother lied about her age to get her into acting. 1896 is most commonly believed, but others suspected 1899 even before this interview was done in 1987.

I think it was kind of a joke, the old line it isn't polite to ask a woman her age. With my own dear late mother, one of my nieces at a very young age asked her "how old are you grandma?" Her reply "old enough to know it is impolite to ask a woman her age dear". Ms. Gish I believe didn't want to mention #s but was very sweet about it.

W D (!?) Griffith was influenced by european films which were more advanced than US films. While Edison was sending his thugs out to smash cameras, Europe was making feature length films, some in color and some with sync sound. Even Australia was making features before Griffith -- 1906's "The Kelly Gang" was nearly 70 minutes long. Wouldn't rely much on this interviewer.

True.... US films became more developed than European films only after WW1. During/ after WW1, the European film industry collapsed. Many actors/ directors came to Hollywood which resulted in its stronghold.
