Misplaced and Dangling Modifiers

Misplaced and dangling modifiers can cause confusion to the reader. A misplaced modifier is in the wrong position in the sentence and needs to be moved. A dangling modifier does not connect to anything in the sentence. There are three things that you can do to fix both of these problems.

    Asking the student questions to spot the mistakes in the sentences causes learning to take place at a deeper and foundational level by creating space for one's own realisation. Thank you!

    how do i differentiate between the two of them. i have an exam tomorrow and i dont know how to know whether a sentence is dangling or misplaced.

  • @WritingBetter

    @WritingBetter

    Both are modifiers that are connected to the wrong thing in a sentence. A misplaced modifier is too far away from the thing it's supposed to modify, while a dangling modifier's intended subject is missing from the sentence altogether. Look for the word/subject that it should modify, and see if it is in the wrong place or if there is nothing that it is modifying in the sentence.

    How do you know where is the modifier

  • @WritingBetter

    @WritingBetter

    5 ай бұрын

    A modifier is a word or phrase, such as adjectives and adverbs, that describes another word or phrase and makes it more specific. Usually, you will find a modifier next to the word or phrase it describes. The big cat (big is the modifier, it modifies/describes cat) The cat quickly ran away. (quickly is the modifier, it modifies/describes how the cat ran) I hope this helps.

    The teacher from France gave us a very difficult exam. (the teacher is from France) The teacher gave us a very different exam from France. (the exam is from France) From France, the teacher gave us a very difficult exam. (the teacher is in France) You can see that if you move the modifier words to different parts of the sentence it changes the meaning. The modifier gives more information about the word or phrase that it is describing.
