MISCONCEPTIONS NIGERIANS HAVE ABOUT KENYA/KENYANS.

    These discussions appear to be more about comparing cultural norms rather than presenting an absolute perspective. For instance, 1. Kenyan women are not family oriented or submissive. Well in contrast with Nigerian culture where the expectations are that she needs to marry early, cook and clean after the men, I even know of one who had to stop working so that she can be ''good wife'' etc. In Kenya, there is a focus on empowering women so as to enhance their desirability in marriage and foster wealth creation and quality family time, often hiring domestic workers for household tasks such as cooking and cleaning. In Kenya, submission is something that is earned rather than automatically expected. Women here will not submit to just any man. So, these are difference in what each country thinks is desirable. 2. Kenyan Women have more of a thick figure. As Ruto said you can NOT collectively term all Kenyan women having a specific figure. However, compared to the Nigerian women population, population of Kenyan women who have nyash seems to higher perhaps that's why they misconception. 3. Kenyan men are lazy. Again, compared to Nigerian men, where the norm is that the man should provide fully such as in a traditional set up. In Kenyan culture, individuality and achievements are valued for both men and women, with an ideal couple being one where both partners work and contribute financially. The expectation is not necessarily equal contributions, but that a woman should be financially independent enough to cover basic expenses, so her partner doesn't need to pay for everything, including personal items like underwear 🙂 4. Kenyans are ruled by white people. This is not true. The white population is quite a small minority. Kenya is not like South Africa. Kenya was built and is ruled by Kenyan Faces. The whole government and majority CEOs and directors are Kenyans. Again, perhaps compared to Nigerian where the main tribes are Bantus. Kenyans are diverse. It's a mix of Bantus, Nilotes, Cushites, Arabs and Indians who all Kenyan home.

    Kenyans, are really adventurers and courageous and will positively seek any opportunity to better their lives. They rarely flaunt their wealth. You could be sitting next to a millionaire in a matatu, or your uber driver could be a millionaire. Kenyan Athletes are millionaires as well, having worked their way up. Your soko, market lady selling tomatoes, could also be your landlord.

    Doesn't change the fact that Kenyans love whites. However its not just a Kenyan problem, even Nigerians, Ghanaians, Ugandans etc. I don't see a non black being considered to be from any sub Saharan country. The diversity of Kenya is there(ish) but the love for the colonialist needs to stop. We don't take the good we take the bad. The Somalis love whites even more. The most resistant of ANY African country were the Ethiopians. I lived in Diani and it was embarrassing. Even Kenyan dudes they think having a white friend is achieving something great.

    This is news to me. I thought colonizers settled in every country they colonized. Now I understand why we Kenyans lost most of our traditional cultures. We don't even have a national dress so we raid from the Masais. They are the only ones who keep their way of life. I guess being nomadic helped them evade the colonizer's influence.

    In Kenya marriages are more of a partnership. The man is the leader but the lady is also expected to contribute intellectually and financially. I don't know if it's the same in Nigeria.

    A good discussion and food for thought. Just to add, one fact about Kenyans is that they pick up things very fast, learn how they work and try apply them in a Kenyanized manner. This is the true Kenyan culture. We learn a lot from the more developed countries and come up with our own tailor made ideas and solutions.

    Why do you say it's a lie? First of all, the people of northern Nigeria, who are Muslims, a lady dare not give birth without marriage, you will be ostracized. You are even supposed to be stoned to death in some Sharia practicing states. It's the federal government that rescue such people from being stoned. We do have some baby mammas in the south but it's always comes as a mistake and many ladies will even try to hide it. Many will leave the children with their parents and others will even lie that they are widows or divorcees. Only the independent women will come out boldly that they are baby mamas. I am not saying it's good thing because the stigmatization makes lots of Nigerian women commit abortion. Abortion is very common in Nigeria because of the stigma attached to baby mammas.

    What's interesting is that Kenyans by large despite having some Western influence in their lifestyle are likely unconscious of that. Probably because they're much more liberalized (live freely to do what they want, of course legally speaking) than West Africans who are more conservative even culturally. That would explain the "whites lifestyle" stereotype

  • @lexichep9518

    @lexichep9518

    I actually thought Kenyans are more conservative in mannerism compared to Nigerians. I say this because in Kenya you won't know who is a millionaire and who is not. Whilst Nigerians it's all about show even just going to the mall or church is an opportunity to 'show off'. Kenyans also tend to be a bit laid back and reserved whereas we find Nigerians more social and presumably 'loud'. So in culture I would say Kenyans are definitely more reserved and generally mind their business. I do agree strongly that they are liberal more so with the women. On Nairobi for instance it's perfectly ok to see an unmarried woman over the age of 30 with minimal societal pressure. The girls in many instances are actually expected to even provide for their families back home. It just different cultures.
