Miscellaneous BBC Schools and Daytime continuity - 1970s

A compilation of BBC1 schools and colleges and other daytime continuity from the mid to late 70s (in no particular order) and featuring both version of the BBC Schools Diamond, the later slides and dots presentation, and various other clocks, slides and captions. Few junctions are in full.
Programme credits and brief clips include Scene, Going to Work, A Good Read, and the end credits of The Electric Company, a 70s American series produced by the Children's Television Workshop - kind of a Sesame Street for slightly older children. I had no idea that it had been shown at some point by the BBC!
Thanks to the late Simon Luxton who provided me with this footage.

takes me back to simpler times this. all i need now is to show it on a 50 inch tv in a wooden cabinet and a MASSIVE video recorder. they had to roll the tv/video combo set into the school rooms it was so big.

From this Wikipedia article - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sesame_Street_in_the_UK: "In 1974, the BBC broadcast 13 episodes of The Electric Company, another CTW show, for an eight-week run.[8] Their rationale to air it was that the show was a part of a school curriculum, accompanied by back-up resources such as books. An independent assessment was conducted afterwards. With the BBC's refusal to air Sesame Street, the debate over its place on British TV passed to ITV." The BBC's opposition to airing these shows is not really surprising. Brits have always been fearful of 'Americanisation', and children's TV is a sacred cow. ABC in Australia have aired Sesame Street (and many other shows originating from PBS) for as long as I can remember. I do recall as a kid having the teacher correct me when I said 'zee' instead of 'zed', but long term it didn't really seem to do anything to me.

  • @ChristopherSobieniak

@@mubd1234 Well good to know Australia didn't mind the program at all. In Canada, CBC aired Sesame Street roughly the same as the US but opted to create their own segments that were edited into the US episodes (and often a year or two behind what was airing in the states).

Does anyone know if the BBC1 diamond animation was transmitted off film each time it went out? Presumably it was colourised "live" like the globe and clock. The music seems to happen so consistently with the animation that I can't imagine it was played in separately. Or did they really have a kaleidoscope of mirrors in their Noddy room?
