Looking for Part 1? • Mirror Frame Pt. 1: D...
We recently had a little work done in our bathroom and in the process we removed the large wall-spanning mirrors. Being the superhero husband I am I immediately promised Nicole that I would replace them with a couple of nice framed mirrors. A record-setting six months later (which is at least a year ahead of schedule by my clock), here we are building the frames.
This is the first in a two-part series covering the design and construction of a simple mirror frame.

Man, I can't believe how great of information you give in each sentence. Love your work, thanks so much for sharing what you know! Beautiful frame!
I'm amazed at how much detail you put into a seemingly simple project. It really sets your work apart. There is so much knowledge and experience packed into this 2 part series, THANK YOU for sharing!!
I just counted, I subscribe to over 30 woodworking channels on YT. I won't use names here but many of these are what I consider to be regular contributors to their channels - like once every week or so. Unfortunately at that pace they end up turning out, to put in nicely, less than inspiring work. This two part series from you is EXACTLY what I am looking for...how I want to spend my time learning and being inspired to get in my shop. I'm an AZ guy that is very appreciative of what you are doing. PLEASE keep it up!
Man I missed this kind of video. Great work Marc and please keep them coming, we all appreciate it.
I really like how you use hand tools to compliment your power tools. I never really used my chisels (a crime I know) until I saw how to use them in your videos.
The project was cool, and more content on your free site is always appreciated. The star of the show, I feel, is the finish technique. Although I'm sure relatively few of us spray, the information concerning how glaze, stain, and especially lacquer works is invaluable. Listening to the old episodes of Wood Talk, you cover the different finishes fairly extensively, but it is nice to see it in action with the information at the same time. It's as valuable as an afternoon class at Woodcraft. I especially like the walkthrough process of the whole project, and especially the tips concerning planing across the grain, and creating the v-groove. Even though I may know these things because I've watched other shows, read magazine articles, or have actual experience in the matter, I watch your show on my living room television, and whatever poor sod is in the living room with me ends up watching it, too, and they begin to ask me questions about the techniques covered, and begin to understand that wood products aren't just formed from the ether, and appreciate the craft more. My kid has even started to show interest, mostly because of shows like yours that make woodworking seem cool. (The cool shirts, background props and the like definitely help) Fantastic offering, as always.
well done Marc - it turned out beautifully
Marc, this was a great two part series with an absolutely out standing finished product.
A lot of really great tips and tricks in this video, and the final product looks great. Thanks for sharing.
The mirror frame looks elegant. Good job!!!
great videos, I was recently given a large mirror and 2 smaller ones. I was trying to come up with a plan for them and you gave me great ideas. thanks
Awesome mirror and great information about the finish and spraying in general. Thanks Marc.
Just plain beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful Mark!!!
Marc, your mirror is fantastic. Great job.
I don't know why it took me a few months to subscribe to your channel, but I'm here now. Great job! Maple looks beautiful and I like the way you describe everything you do! Great videos man!
Great job Marc! As always, very useful and informative video! Thanks.
stunning peace as all away mark
love how this turned out! its only a frame for a mirror but the way u made it is beautifully done! ..im sure ur bathroom appreciates it.;) its amazing how much dust/ flakes the router kicks out even w/ d/c hooked up! i love those counter sinks.just picked up the 9pc from rockler store thats in my area. definitely worth the buck$ they cost.
Great mirror, looks great in the space!
Pretty darn sweet! Nice job!
Looks great! I really learned a lot with the detailed videos on this project, so thank you for that!

Great video! I love the tips about finishing. That is by far my worst skill in the shop and it scares me every time.
Very nice job. Certainly learned something new.
keep on trucking !
Marc, have you ever used alcohol to raise the grain. It dries much faster the water, and raises the grain as well. Nice job on the mirror finish.
thank you Mark
Hey Marc, just found your channel. We're new youtubers. Your mirror turned out great and I love those little clips - so cute. Look forward to seeing other videos.
Really nice and great video!
So much useful information. Thank you!
Very nice, Marc!
Very nice. Great job.
I think I will give this a try. Thanks mark good instructions
As always +1. Thank you.
You're an artist, man.
Nice work.
Very nice Mark Good looking for any home.
Woodworking with The Wood Whisperer woodwhisperer Love the Mirror and Finish. I've been really Busy with Demolishing a House beside of us, so I've not been around in awhile because of that. I've not even been out in the Workshop because of it either. I need to get back in the Chat with you guys. I also need to try and get this Scrollsaw Piece out to you, money been a little tight last few years.
Great! I'm gonna remember that finish recipe!
Love it. Vary nice Mirror an craftsmanship. Time for me to get busy :)
Oh, man... so much information... so amazing! =)
Very nice
Awesome as always Mark, the only problem with 2 parters is waiting the week in between.
Great job, I get inspired every time I watch one of your videos. Quick question did u not include the machining of the V-grooves or did I miss it?
Thank you for sharing your expertise. I learn so much from your videos. How about a project using only hand tools?
Looks like it's just about time to replace the drawer fronts so they match the mirror exactly!
congratulations.
Don't know if i can post image links here.. but the "remember to use the router in the right direction.." has a trick for people to rembember.. point your right hand thumb in the direction of the wood, and your index finger now points in the right direction.. Great project Marc Spagnuolo ! www.kregtool.com/files/newsletters/kregplus/Images/january14/rout-right-direction-img1-large.jpg

RoboCNC Frees- & Graveerwerk Thats a clever trick.
Your videos are great. How important is the 1/4" plywood backer? Mirrors from frame shops often have cardboard backers.
I notice it was exactly centered on the wall - is that intentional/ correct? But it’s beautiful - love the wood clips too
Awesome series with incredible detail and very useful tips. I have one small question (maybe I missed it in the video), but did you do a finish on the backer board? I image that, with it being in a 'wet' environment, without a finish, it might swell up or otherwise cause trouble. Or did you use some sort of marine-grade plywood? I hope you keep doing these videos from time to time for those of us who have not (yet) subscribed to the guild.

Robert Echten I actually didn't bother with finish on the backer. It's just plywood and isn't likely to move very much. And while there might be some humidity in the bathroom, it really isn't substantial and it's only temporary. So at least in my situation, I don't anticipate any major issues.
This is really great. The wife and I are going to attempt something like this. Side question, where about are you in AZ? I'm in the west valley :). Happy woodworking!
Awesome job on a simple yet elegant design. Like to ask you, what is your HVLP and what nozzle/needle combo did you use to spray the lacquer? I have been spraying cabinet grade lacquer finishes here and there...and cannot seam to get that smooth flat, dimple-less finish with my Apollo-5. I even have a high solids cap as well. I'm close though. I'm not sure if I'm pushing too much pressure, not big enough needle, thinning out too much or not enough (usually 15~20% thinner)? Did you spray straight lacquer from the can? I also never tried the 80/20 thinning/finish step. Perhaps that might be all that I'm missing? Thanks again for doing these videos....keep up the great work!
Turned out beautiful! Will that trick using lacquer thinner work on a polyurethane finish?
Cool frame Marc ;-) Curious why you chose lacquer rather than a water based finish?

BoatworksToday I like lacquer better. :)
It was weird seeing myself in a wood whisperer video!
Question about the eagle clips: If someone were to bump into whatever you hang from the side, would it slip off of the clips? Not something you would have to worry about for your mirror of course.
@woodwhisperer
9 жыл бұрын
dafickler Yes. The clips lock into one another really well so depending on the application, it may or may not be an issue.
what about, making top clasps thiner, and screwing them down with those hangers?
Fantastic job. Curious though. Why use the wood tabs instead of using a point driver to keep in the mirror and backing ?

Alexander Padron Personal preference. I find this solution to be more elegant.
When cleaning the mirror in the future, how do you keep the mirror from moving on the hanging clips? They look like they would slide. Love the look. Thanks
@woodwhisperer
9 жыл бұрын
Charles Reicks With 1/4" glass, it's pretty heavy. So you'd have to be pretty aggressive in your wiping to cause it to slip off the cleats.
I will be make it this
Looks great! One concern - On the Eagle Clips, do they have some lateral movement stoppage? Like grooves? Otherwise, I feel like when you're cleaning the mirror, you could slide it right off of the clips with a heavy sideways wipe.

James Walston If you can slide that much weight just by cleaning the glass, you might be cleaning a little too hard. :)

Nice job. Could have eliminated the top two wood clips, two wood spacers, and two eagle clips, with 1 French cleat made from your scraps.
What did you spray on the wood before you applied the backing plates for the mirror mounts

Just out of curiosity what would you charge a customer if they came in and asked you to build one of these?
hi how did you get those space free joints?
What countersink bit and collar are you using at 3:37?
@woodwhisperer

AdmiralBumblebee That's a set from Rockler. Unfortunately, the collar clogs with dust all the time so they can be annoying. But they do cut cleanly. www.rockler.com/rockler-3-piece-tapered-countersink-bit-set-with-case?sid=AFN86

Woodworking with The Wood Whisperer Thanks for the reply. I have a set that also clogs in a similar way and I was somewhat hoping you found something that worked better in that regard. Countersink bits are such a pain :(
what pencil is that you are using?
I can make mine so good
depositing... crap, right into the finish

This is casual English. Using can’t in that manner is accepted and understood. Like many things in the English language it doesn’t strictly make perfect sense but implies a degree of additional challenge in the task. I’m certainly not the only one that uses the phrase. Another example “Can’t you comment on something other than my grammar?” That’s an acceptable and understood phrase that implies a certain amount of challenge or frustration about the task in question. 😉

@@woodwhisperer Very intectual answer, But not a Good Eye Deer.
Sure, there aren't many airborne bugs in Arizona, but it must be really annoying to sand through all of the scorpions and lizards that end up in the finish while it dries. How come you never show that step?
shame on you. Why is a plastic chest in your garden? should not be made of wood ??? ;-D aaaahhhmmm nice mirror frame
Very nice
