While you’re verbally paying tribute to the Miranda, listing all its accomplishments and all it’s survived, it’s against a backdrop montage of Mirandas getting their asses kicked lol 😂

Miranda class was the "If we can't kill it no one can" ship of the late 23rd century. it was supposed to be the mobile weapon platform, then Starfleet got lazy because of their peace deal with the Klingons. They thought "Peace has been achieved. We no longer need weapons of war. Instead we can now devout all our resources to study of art and science." which eventually lead to the stagnation of their weapon and shield designs let alone hulls. While the shape of the ships got smoother, their defensive systems in the mid pre Borg 24th century were not much better then the late 23rd. When the Borg attacked it was the kick in the dick the Federation needed to realize there are some races out there that the only way to make peace with them is to turn them into a footnote in the history books. When they encountered the Dominion the Miranda had the firepower with the new weapons installed. It would of done well if Dominion weapons didn't render their shields useless.

Starfleet rectified the shield issue in fairly short order. The edge the Dominion had was a massive sensor array(mentioned in the episode "Behind The Lines" I think) that allowed them to detect enemy movements up to 5 sectors away. Thus if they saw 100 ships coming at them, they could outflank them with 300 of their own ships. That's what really made the Dominion so formidable.

In the movie era the Miranda was a powerful battleship. After TNG it became cannon fodder, especially during the dominion war era.

In WWI the USS Texas a powerful battleship. In WWII it was relegated to shore bombardment and convoy escort duties. As a class the Miranda started off with amazing technical specifications only to be limited by the overall design as technology changed and progressed. Happens with military equipment IRL.

@@thegman1985 You got a good point. Honestly it fits more in well with the idea that Star Trek protrays the ships like sailing vessels. HMS Victory wasnt a new or top of the line vessel at the time when she was commanded by Nelson for example. But take for example, a sailor from 1500 to 1800 nothing major would have changed really. Maybe a week or less and that sailor would be good to go. Take a sailor from 1800 to 1900 and he would be completely lost. Same goes from 1900 to 2000.

And yet when the last Miranda goes to the boneyard, the crew will still be flown back in a B-52.

Don't forget the oberth class had explodium also.

It's the Federation T-72. Derived from an older, superior but more experimental and unreliable chassy (Connie, T-64), it combines all the lessons learned and discards the less cost-effective design features, becoming a mass produceable, sturdier and almost as good workhorse to equip most of the military, reserving the original breakthrough design for elite formations. I'm surprised we never saw any being operated by Federation allies, having been lent, sold or gifted.

It would make sense for the private sector to buy up a bunch of them after they became obsolete. I know Picard has claimed the federation doesn't use money, but that's bs. It's modular design would make it a prime contender for aftermarket suppliers to produce upgraded subsystems for the vessel in the private sector as well.

I think something like the B-52 or the A-10 may be better examples. Why get rid of something if the airframe is reliable, fairly easily retrofitted, & there's all manner of expertise, knowledge & parts. The US Air Force has been flying B52's since like 1955. (I doubt any are actually that old). There's like 60 in service, and 10-15 in long term storage. With 70 years of knowledge, expertise & tools; if really needed they could get those ready to fly fairly quick (prob. months, but still quicker than starting from scratch)

I think of the Miranda class as being like the sci-fi equivalent to the C-130 Hercules, A-10 Thunderbolt II, or B-52 Stratofortress. It's a design that is efficient, versatile, & able to slowly updated over time. It's not the most glamorous ship but it's basic design is so good even newer designs meant to replace it are unable to do so.

I could agree with that if not fof the fact that the Miranda class should have been surpassed by newer classes. If you look at the examples you provided, they were not replaced because nothing has been put around to replace them. There is no effective anti tank tank plane in the sky like the A-10 nor a plane that can do better than the B-52 in laying down sheer amount of bombs. I think Starfleet just built so many of them over the course of their long life that not only replacing them, but also increasing the size of the fleet was a very big factor in keeping them. Also didn't help that the TNG Era kinda played into that Starfleet could handle anything.

@@gregorymcavoy758 The B-1 was intended to replace the B-52, and the F-35 was supposed to replace the A-10. Both technically surpass the older models. It's the older planes' survivability, efficiency, flexibility, and massive existing support infrastructure that keeps them around - in the B-52's case, likely longer than its nominal replacement. The Miranda seems to fit that description perfectly. (Another example: the SR-71 vs. the U-2.)

Absolutely based take. The Miranda-class is my favorite starship class, even managing to beat out the sovereign. You've done this class a great justice in this video, bravo sir.

Ngl the Miranda is one of my favorite ships along with the Excelsior and Sovereign. The refit constitution aesthetic is just top notch and it just looks like a useful and utilitarian ship. Love your channel btw. Thanks!

I love the Miranda class and it’s replacement the Sabre class. Workhorses that weren’t the darlings of the fleet. One thing perhaps you can look into however is the original specs of the ship (which you touched in with the phaser banks), such as the crew compliment and how ships have changed with time. The Lantree had, I want to say 12 crew? But it was a cargo runner, a Dominion war variant would certainly not have 220 crew given the automation upgrades and wartime crew shortages. Many stats us Trek fans use, such as the TNG tech manual would bare little resemblance to ships 20-120 years in the future during the dominion war. It would be interesting to see a video series breaking those differences down.

The Miranda is the only ship class Starfleet felt that could finally replace the B-52 class. It was a sad day to see the U.S.S. Buff off for the last time.

It does look pretty good, but only from the specific angles it's shown in the movie.

the guys at Spacedock went over the size difference between the Connie and Miranda. In their estimation, the Miranda actually had more interior room than that of the seemingly larger Constitution. The large raised section abaft the bridge was just as big if not more so than the secondary hull of the taller ship. It was all in the packaging. The miranda has a thicker and longer saucer than the Constitution and that equals a lot of crew space.

EC Henry made a video proving the Miranda was actually LARGER than the Constitution, from an internal space standpoint, and most likely even stronger protected because it had fewer obvious weakpoints like the "neck" that connects the saucer section to the engineering hull. Basically it was more compact yet had more inside room while requiring less armor to protect it.

I’ve always liked the stout ship designs.

One of my Favorite Starship Classes of all time! Even when I was playing STO I used it for so long before I took something better.

the segue into the advert was so smooth as to be unnoticeable. And I never thought anything about your weight, just your voice.

Probably my favorite class. I love how it avoids the standard form factor. That said, I would love to see it’s layout in a newer design language, ideally late 24th century.

The Nubula Class took basically the Miranda form and updated it to the TNG era. It even kept the idea of an interchangeable workhorse.

I thought the Reliant was Soyuz-class, like the Bozeman that came through the temporal rift in TNG (forgot the name of the episode, the one with Kelsey Grammer). I thought that ship looked exactly the same by Worf called in Soyuz-class. I thought the Soyuz was the original class and then it got upgraded to the Miranda-class, or something like that. Anyway, I could be totally wrong.

I'm pretty sure you are correct, read the book Ship Of The Line about the Bozeman and what happened, if I believe what I read the Bozeman was compared to a old cutter class Navy warship, could do a lot of towing but also be strong enough to do border control. I don't think the Bozeman had the weapons bar like Reliant but I think the bar was used with something else

The Soyuz-class should have been mentioned in this video. I think it stood out enough for at least an honorable mention. In TNG "Cause and Effect" was the first introduction to the Soyuz-class by name. Obviously, the Miranda-class ships like the Reliant go back a bit further, but keep in mind the Bozeman was brought forward from the past. When comparing the two vessels, the Miranda-class appears to have combat in mind within its design. During the time of its construction, tensions were high with the Klingon Empire and other aggressive species in the galaxy. During the time of TNG, we see a reduction in Starfleet's role as a military organization. Possibly leading up to the TNG era of time, some of the Miranda-class ships were retrofitted to Soyuz-class as we see an extended section between the two shuttle bays and a potentially extended sensor array. This would support Starfleet's beginning of redirection back towards exploration, but it does not seem that all ships of the class received this treatment as shown during conflicts with the Borg. Still, there is a lot of lore and cannon to wade through for a more precise review of the class. Thoughts?

Probably covered somewhere else in commentary, but the Yoyodyne Division was a designer in joke used to tip a hat to Buckaroo Banzai. In the 80s the (possibly beta canon) explanation of the difference between the three main tiers of vessels was as follows: Federation cruisers/battle cruisers/battleships had heavy armament, standard two-nacelle configuration, and both a primary and secondary hull; frigates (which the Avenger class was originally said to be) had a primary hull (saucer) but an extended hull to house shuttles/assault shuttles and/or troop barracks (look at the FASA Chandley, Northampton, Locknar classes to expand the idea); escorts/destroyers would have 1-2 nacelles and a basic primary hull structure. Once we get past the 1-2nd season of TNG, this starts to fall down, as production designers were actually starting to add to the visual starship catalogue, but with little initial rhyme or reason.

One of my favorite Federation starship designs, in the top five.

Why are there no other ships designated with an A, B, C or bloody D? Saratoga mentioned in this video and even the Defiant should plus probably so many more.

Enterprise was a special case we all guess. Obviously in Discovery, Voyager got its A, B, C etc. Though no one questioned it, so there might be a NCC-211 USS Mayfield that is up to NCC-211-G in the 24th century for all we know. Assuming you want to make Discovery part of the Prime universe.

My thought is that if a ship does an amazing enough job over its life, it gets placed on a list of ship names to be kept in service. If a subsequent ship of the name manages to to even better over its life than the original, then its registry is added to the list. Given a suitably high standard to make it onto the list one time and a requirement that the second time be visibly even better a record, it would probably be a very small number of ships that make the list twice. We could say that NX-01 Enterprise was added to the list at Federation Starfleet's founding in honor of its role in forming the Federation (among its various actions), and then NCC-1701 re-earned the spot.

Aside from the Constellation class, the Miranda class is my favorite ship design. It looks balanced, practical and more maneuverable than the Constellation, Excelsior, Ambassador or Galaxy class ships. The designers tried to copy it with the Soyuz class, but it doesn't have the same feel as the Miranda does. The Miranda looks like a ship that can be produced quickly and at a much lower cost than other Starfleet ships and is powerful enough to hold it's own in a fight. In someways the Miranda is kind of like Starfleet's version of the B'rel class Bird of Prey, a low class destroyer/light cruiser type of ship that is the mainstay of the fleet.

I luvs the Miranda. Fantastic design! My #1 of the ST universe.

The Miranda class is my favorite Trek ship, and probably the most practical Starfleet ship design within the confines of Trek canon. Visually, it has a very distinct profile from nearly any angle even compared to other Starfleet designs (a big plus for any visual effect), it's compact, capable and what you'd expect a workhorse ship to look like compared to the sleeker contemporary ships it would serve alongside over its long service history (Constitution, Excelsior, Ambassador, Galaxy, and of course, its bigger, young brother the Nebula and deadly distant cousin, the Akira class). Now, the real world practical reason it kept showing up for well over a century in canon is because the Miranda model was one of the last ship models from the Industrial Light & Magic sets produced during the motion picture era that Paramount still had plenty of spares of. Because of this, it was affordable to make/break them for special effects purposes, and later, provided a great figure to scan into a full 3D CGI model. This is why we see so many of them get blown away like dandelions doing banzai charges along side Excelsiors and Galaxy class ships during the Dominion War and, well, basically everywhere else. After the stigma of being the iconic antagonistic ship in Wrath of Khan, it became the designated "ship of doom" pretty much everywhere they showed up thereafter. (Star Trek IV, several episodes of TNG, etc) All that said, I can believe the Miranda class served as a workhorse for that long because it's a very practical looking ship with a more outwardly modular design for its function.

I don't know what it was about the original movies, but I love the designs. My favorite Starfleet designs are the refit Constitution, Excelsior, and Miranda in that order. Was super happy when STO had a Miranda as a starting class.

The Miranda-class is the successor to the Daedalus-class. Daedalus was a predecessor to the (poorly and confusingly named) NX-class, so it began service in the 2140s (or earlier). Was refit in the 2150s with a Warp 5 MkII engine as the mainstay of the Romulan War. Continued to serve alongside the Columbia-class in the early days of the Federation. Was still in use by the SCE in the 2260s. Sisko had a model of the class in his office. (Apparently because in the new timeline of Bad Reboot they are still in service in the 2380s).

It was the federation's hockey puck before the defiant variants came out. I can absolutely respect that.

And, beyond all these points, the Miranda class is a damn sexy bit of Star Fleet engineering. Seriously, if you got a Miranda, you could pimp out that Captain’s office like Eulogy Jones.

I always liked the Miranda's design. I is my favorite after the TOS Connie & the movie refit Connie.

The nice thing about the Miranda class is that it's immortal so long as the design is liked by Starfleet's shipyards. Keep the same basic ship but just keep upgrading it to be an effective ship for the modern era. It's a general-purpose utility vessel that is easily made into a warship when needed. If the Constitution-class was never created, a Miranda would have been modified to be a much-less-crewed Enterprise... but Scotty would not have had the surplus tech to do most of his miracle works.

The Nebula was more a large mainline science vessel. But the Miranda and Centaur ships were definitely "Hatchbacks" although I think the Miranda Class was more the 1998 Toyota Corolla of Star Fleet. There is Rust on the Frame, the Engine is ratling, the Fanbelt is screeching, the powersteering has failed and the breaks are barely working, with only one headlight working and at least one turnsignal smashed, but its always there when the Fleet needs a ship. They REALLY wanted to get their money's worth with it!

Having two ships of the same class named Saratoga isn't unheard of in Trek lore. Sisco renamed the second Defiant class ship (can't remember its original name) USS Defiant. So long as the two Saratogas didn't serve at the same time, it could be the precedent Sisco thought of for the second Defiant.

I agree it's an underappreciated vessel. I tried to count how many ships were actually destroyed on screen in combat, and it's less than ten suggesting it's not a 'cannon fodder' ship. Take the famous "Sacrifice of Angels" with the Sitak and Majestic cut to pieces- they had already flown with the Defiant through most of the Dominion formations taking hit after hit (off screen) while dishing out some hate of their own. I'd like to think that in TNG Reunification Pt1 and P2 we see the mothballed Mirandas that would later be rushed back into service for the Dominion War (someone did a good analysis to justify keeping them around). I believe that production of the vessel was always continuous but no space frame had served more than 50 years continuously. At least without a mothball snooze.

i could see it being used a lot longer for short and medium range freight hauling (passengers), it's never going to be a capital ship, but it worked, and was apparently cheap to build. i could also see it being used in the same roll the archer class was. starbase support. for times when a runabout just wouldnt cut it

Closest thing to a Pimp Hand that the Federation had before the advent of the Defiant in DS9. (Cuz it sure as hell wasn't the Connies or Excelsiors or Ambassadors or Galaxies)

Ok so the Saratoga was probably destroyed and another one was named after it. It's not uncommon to name ships after destroyed ones (IRL, Saratoga's sister was destroyed and an Essex was named after her). In universe, Defiant was destroyed so Sao Paulo took up her name.

Decided to go looking. There's actually 2-3 Miranda Saratogas. One from ST4 (NCC-1887). I would not be surprised if she was decommissioned well before TNG. Then there's two Saratogas in TNG. NCC-31640 on an okudagram, and NCC-31911 of Wolf 359. And then a new Saratoga was around by 2374. If I could, I would change the okudagram registry to be the NCC-31911 that would be lost the following year because otherwise it makes no sense.

The Phaser emitters on the rollbar were Phaser cannons like the Defiant had.

I like to think the Miranda was introduced into service sometime around or slightly after TOS, essentially while the Pioneer would surve as a general workhorse and the Connie as an aged but venerable position doign mostly 5 year exploration missions and being among the most powerful ships of the time, the Miranda is introduced to e the replacement workhorse for the Pioneer, not as capable as a Connie, but prety close, meant to phase out all the older TOS ship classes and desighned to e way more upgradable and modular then the Connie, this I like to think is why the Miranda continued to see service long after the Connie was retired, it became easier to mass produce and upgrade and overall a good frigate or general purpose ship. SOmething I've come to notice is that Starfleet isn't very consistant on ship roles, you can try to classify Klingn or Romulan ships but not really Starfleet, as Starfleet pumps out a shit ton more ship veriety then other factions who develop a new class and stick to it, like the Klingons using the D7/K'tinga for so many years and eventually adding the B'rel and Vor'cha being the equivalant of a Galaxy, then the Negh'var ecomign the best ship in the KDF, each of these classes built either to fill a certain role or in reaction to enemies and allies alike upgradign their fleets. THis explains all the "odd" Starfleet desighns over the years. Starfleet just keeps pumping out new desighns, some get mass produced in large numbers like the Miranda, and others just remain small in numbers, often just 1 of a number of background desighns filling up the fleet, often with the class that becomes the latest Enterprise acting as the main premier ship.

As I recall there was a Soyuz class variant in the TNG timeline (Cause and Effect), which the Enterprise kept bumping into... Quite literialy..

Miranda is one of my favorites, I mean a lot of the secondary ships have a kitbash feel (at least pre CGI being a big thing for shows) and it and the Centaur class' look if "just strap some nacelles to the saucer" was always neat to me. It's nice that they carried this through to the Cerritos and it's class.

@@trustin.p9504 The Akira is probably a better example of an upgraded Miranda. Sabers are more focused for patrol and fleet actions. Though I will admit, if you're looking for a cheap ship for escort or vip transportation, a saber would be a least resource intensive way to go about the task.

@@trustin.p9504 You've got no arguments from me on that account. A show that features a saber as the hero ship would be a pretty neat addition to the star trek lineup imo. It would be a show that focuses on patrol routes and doing missions within federation space. Maybe it would be part of a larger task force, so every now and then you'd get some other reoccurring ships in the akira and steamrunner classes. Of course other Sabers would be prevalent as well.

I have the Hotwheels version of the USS Reliant. It sits perfectly on it’s warp nacelles. I think if a Miranda class could actually land this way, it would make an excellent troop deployment vessel.

I agree that this ship was the "workhorse" or backbone of the fleet from it's conception up until the early 24th century. i am willing to bet that the Miranda Class was probably a universal cruiser that outright replaced all of the other older early 23rd century/late 22nd Starfleet ships that Starfleet used around the time of the original Constitution class launch. Ships like the one Kirk's father was in command of and ships like we saw in the first few seasons of Discovery. I am willing to bet it replaced them all. It's probably why Starfleet wasn't in a rush to produce and engineer a brand new new heavy cruiser and decided to refit the Constitution class instead. This would give Starfleets best engineering minds the time to come up with the Excelsior class, which became the new backbone of the fleet around the time the Ambassador class was launched, and it stayed that way until the end of the Dominion war.

I just wanted to second this comment. My wife works in this field and let’s just say, it’s complicated…and diet culture tends to do more harm than good by damaging a persons metabolic rate. So be careful and remember, no rush. Be happy, that’s what matters. The most important thing is that you’re an awesome person and you should always be treated as such. If people have a problem with your appearance, then that’s a reflection of them. Not you.

EC Henry has a video about the comparative sizes of the Constitution and Miranda and the Miranda actually had larger internal volume based on the Wrath of Khan

The real world US military version of the Miranda is the Arleigh Burke class destroyer. With 70 of them built since 1988, 69 still in use, and not likely to get a real successor, this ship class will be in use for a very long time. With the way things are going, the ones currently in use will probably stay in service in excess of 100 years, being refitted and updated as technologies come and go, if the owners are able to afford it.

Never cared for the Miranda class as it seemed to lack any serious firepower, limited only to the rollbars; I thought a worthy updated class was the Nebula-class, having a compact yet very powerful design in the galaxy-class age.

Saturday Morning Cartoons, surely you mean re-runs of Star Trek? The Miranda class has the legacy of being a 'jack of all trades, master of none' Starship, which would explain why Starfleet ordered so many to be built across the Federation. I can't wait to see you cover the Excelsior class, which is another legacy vessel and every Admirals dream flagship. This is despite more larger, spacious, powerful and comfortable classes being in service (looking at you Galaxy class, damn flying Marriot convention centre).

It's not really a surprise that they lasted so long as they were just a really well thought out design. Some fan worked out that it actually had more internal volume than a Constitution and with the torpedo pod it was far better armed. In every metric it was a superior design. Too bad we never saw a refit version to either Excelsior or Ambassador specs.

I have the Miranda starter ship in STO.

They should use Miranda class when Discovery jumps into the future Earth.

So were lessons learned with the Miranda applied to the Excelsior to contribute to that ship's remarkable longevity? (still constructing brand new variant Excelsiors in the 2380s)

After the Khan encounter you think the security systems would be updated as a five digit number code some that is as complex as a bicycle lock code, would be a updated.

It was mentioned in the background dialog during the battle for Earth in Star Trek: First Contact (the movie). Even sounded like Kelsey Grammer's voice added in. The Bozeman was the ships name.

The Bozeman like the Saratoga, was a Soyuz class Miranda variant.

The Miranda class is my favorite ship in all of Trek, bar none

If it was on Lower Decks then I guarantee you the USS MacDuff was named after the Lysian imposter Kieran MacDuff from "Conundrum". They like dropping tidbits like that lol...

“Best Supporting Actor” seeing as the ships are characters.

Really good ship that could have been refitted to a light escort carrier not sure why those shuttle bays could not have been converted into fighter bays easily and its power grid was built to handle some very heavy weapons (at least the reliant was) so it could probably handle heavy cannons guess the writers of ds9 needed a redshirt ship for the big fleet battles anyway great video dude!

The Miranda walked so that others could run.

Well, it's the only other physical model of a starship to exist at the time, except maybe for the Oberth. Big surprise, then, that both Miranda and the Oberth were seen in Next Gen and in other productions set in that era. Filming needed physical models in those days, and what I find shocking is that Next Gen production of the late 80's and early 90's are now closer to the production of TOS in the late 60's than they were to now. CGI models just weren't there at the time, and making new physical models was a big deal. So, we have a supposedly technically advanced Starfleet that has ship hull designs that have been around for a century. But, on the story level, what with the peace of Khitomer and so on, it's not so surprising that old ships stuck around and that maybe policies allowed the further production of ships like the Miranda and Excelsior but nothing larger and stronger for a long time. And the eras ARE different in portrayals of the Miranda. The Miranda is a cramped, no-nonsense ship in the 23rd Century, probably more massive and with more volume than the Connie, with great defensive and utilitarian applications. Honestly, I do think that it probably made the Constitutions obsolete. In the 24th C, automation makes for a smaller crew and more pretty interior, with officers allowed families even on what had become a smaller Starfleet ship. The plasma lit nacelles and various designs also speaking towards new technologies infused into old hull designs. Possibly, warp field geometry and models developed from experience with established vessels leading to interior designs over new hull configurations? But, anyway, they may have been old and aging towards obsolescence, but there ALWAYS seemed to be more Miranda variants to be seen in Starfleet even as the shows and the 24th C carried on. I have to think that the Mirandas were an ubiquitous ship within Starfleet. For decades it was probably THE ship that people thought of when thinking of Starfleet; at least in the sense that THIS is the ship that represents the workhorse, or the border patrol or so on. They must have been very successful because there were a lot of intact hulls still about during the Dominion War. I think that its then large but compact design with its dual shuttlebays and carrying capacity made it the heavy pickup truck of the 23rd Century which carried over well into the 24th Century. Yes, it became an obsolete small ship that turns out to have been overproduced, but it was still useful as the light pickup truck of the 24th Century. The heavy pickup role being taken by the Constellation, and then by newer, large ships later in the century. But it should be noted that the larger ships didn't really become commonplace until the 2350's or 2460's. Indeed, if given an inventory ship list, would the larger ships be seen as common? So, yeah, the Miranda had a long run due to its efficient utility of costs, defense and ability to carry supplies to colonies and outposts.

Apparently they should have been called the sparky blowee upee class based on the footage used.
