MinuteEarth Explains: Size

Ғылым және технология

In this collection of classic MinuteEarth videos, we tackle the science of size.
We originally created the videos in the “MinuteEarth Explains” series for another project. But we know that lots of people right now are looking for really good online educational content - and something to take their mind off current events - so we decided to release them here as well. We’d love to know what you think, so leave us a comment below!

@My Name Kevin Have you seen the monster under my couch? My dog sheds like it is his ultimate goal, all of that hair opened a portal to a colossal field with a massive cavern underneath. I have crept into the portal, having rolled around in hair to be like them, just in case if they are hostile. There were a lot of them carrying all sorts of things, I saw portals that lead elsewhere. I crept into a hole and saw a massive dog in the middle, just chilling, the thing was at least 1 Gogol times the size of a leviathan, and had normal proportions, if they decide to attack humanity then we are doomed. They are practically an ant colony, and we are one of their resources. The ball of wax on my desk is pretty massive, it may not be the biggest thing but it is quite the chonk. And do not get me started on the Space Worms!

Like a good novel, these best clips share the quality of information layering. The delivery of ideas is so dense that the viewer is intrigued and compelled see it more than once, to pick up more detail. And by delivering teaching at more than one level, you reach a broader audience, even those with a background in the field. That's not easy, bravo!

Great idea! I'd seen most of these before, but it had been long enough to make this a nice refresher. And a lot of us have a good amount of time to watch a TenMinuteEarth video given all the social isolation (which I'm sure affects you all too), so the timing is ripe. Also, it's always nice to see the faces in front of the brains behind the Minute series.

Interesting bit on fisheries. About 10 years ago, Ontario, Canada changed their freshwater fisheries regulations. For several years prior many fish harvested had a minimum size requirement, but then they changed the regulations to a slot size for most species. For some species, only fish within the slot size range may be kept, but for certain species of fish an angler may keep ONE trophy sized fish above the slot and all others must be within the legal size limit. The Ministry even studied fish sizes based on geographic location, so slot sizes change depending on which body of water you're fishing in.

My guess is that somewhere between 100 C and -273.15 C there has to be a temperature, where water vapour just cannot exist anymore, and has to collapse into droplets. I mean... I highly doubt that quantum fluctuations would be strong enough to prevent the forming of droplets, right?
