Being one of Harryhausen's greatest creations the Minaton is criminally underused in this film. We really should have had more action from him.

One thing you don't notice right away is how well lit the stop motion figure is to make it fit in with the night scene.

Minaton was one of Harryhausens most underrated stop motion creatures. Wish we could have seen more of him.

I was thinking the same thing. When I saw it as a kid I was highly disappointed that it didn't fight them.

Yooo this movie was from my childhood and though it didn't cause long lasting trauma some scenes did scare the crap out of me

The animation and effects are absolutely amazing. It beats the mind-numbing CGI we get today.

While CGI is obviously superior in terms of realism and what you can actually do with it. I do personally prefer high-quality stop-frame animation, it captures my imagination a lot more and I love the craft and appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into it much more

@@blindtruth4614 POTENTIALLY superior, yes, definitely. You can do anything with CGI. But its freedom is often its downfall. While there is plenty of bad stop motion, it also FORCES good practice in some areas: you have to use correct gravity (or they fall over!), perfect lighting and textures (as it's real), very deliberate positioning (as it takes so long), better model acting (as it's hard to move the facial features: the story must all be in the body) and real experts (as only a few people can make it look convincing). For me, this enforced solidity is what makes Talos the greatest SFX shot ever. You can feel the massive weight of that giant in every slow and deliberate move.

@@Pythagoras_was_right I think the only superior CG is from Jurassic Park because they used a painstaking process of making the CG look real. Besides the fact that it always looks flat and 'liquidy' to me, the movement is still a huge problem. Gollum in LOTR had good movements because they used an actual actor for the movements of Gollum. Without this sort of technique, CG movement looks far too smooth.

Minotaur vs Werewolf

Man that compositing is insanely good.

The screams in the old films are always more dramatic

I really wish that Minaton did get a fight in the film. Would have loved to see him not get destroyed (and maybe stand guard outside of the temple after he moved that stone). Then you can have Trog face off against him, while Sinbad and his crew go inside to cure the prince. That way Trog could get a win and be a bit winded, and his loss to the Sabertooth would not seem as unfair as it was in the end of the movie.

When I first saw this movie, I thought that the minotaur was going to fight the troglodyte.

I remember watching this 20+ years ago. I didn't remember the name until I found a clip of the movie where Troglodyte (if I'm spelling it correctly) fights the Sabretooth. I still remember how I got sad seeing the Minotaur die here. Not because I felt bad for it, but because I badly wanted to see it fight the Troglodyte.

Minaton's last feat of strength, in pulling out that pyramid block and being crushed by it! Wow! minus the cruelty, the superhuman - strength and imposing appearance is desirable.

At least Stop Motion Animation is still used today on the internet. The Lego stop animation my made by amateurs, but it is still Stop Motion.

Remember watching this in the cinema as a kid and I loved the Minotaur but I got really upset when it got stuck under the block and they just left it to die/rust? I also recall that in the end credits you had a pair of eyes pop up in a kind of end credit scene which was the first time I can recall such a thing happening during the credits

I remember watching this in 7th grade and thought the minotaur was cool! It was really sad when he got stuck under the block and was just left there.

I had fear about the creatures but in the same time i like both movies from the 70s.

I wish the Minotaur battled the Toglodyte in stead of the Smilodon.

That's nostalgia talking. I grew up with Ray Harryhausen special effects, and for their time they were awesome...but there was a lot of awful stop-motion, too. People who whine about bad CGI conveniently leave out the good stuff. Besides, CGI is stop-motion, too, just using 3D images rather than physical models. I love when the best CGI and practical effects are mixed together. Watching Aslan in The Narnia movies is some of the top-notch CGI modern animators offer.

Harryhausen, great as he was, took some shortcuts with the animation here that he might not have taken earlier in his career, such as having the Minotaur turn without shifting his weight but simply swiveling as if he is on a Lazy Susan at 0:42

@@vicmason25 And Chewbacca was voiced by spliced-together bear sounds. Basically Mayhew's entire career was sustained on successfully walking around in a bear suit; not as simple as it sounds. Watch the clip :"Cloud City Betrayal" around 2.17. He staggers down that corridor like a sailor on shore-leave

Minoton was under used. Ray harryhausen said it that they should have gone for minoton v trog fight. To be honest i rather the smilodon. Ray harryhausen liked the arsinoitherium and it was suppose to fight trog as a introduction to trog. Minoton v arsinoitherium could of been good fight.

What I *just* learned blows my mind even more than when I originally saw this. The Minoton was ACTUALLY played by a living person...one Peter Mayhew! (Chewbacca) So instead of this being a notable piece of stop motion cinematography, it is instead an even more impressive piece of live action being portrayed as stop motion! Mayhew was uncredited for the part in the movie, but with Peter Mayhew's massive size, it makes sense that he would fit the part.

Minoton was a mixture of stop motion and live action. You are correct in saying Peter mayhew did the live action scenes, but they were mostly close ups with little movement. The bulk of it was stop motion.
