Minority Report: Existentialism vs Romanticism

Ойын-сауық

In 1956 Philip K. Dick wrote the short story "The Minority Report" that posed a poignant philosophical question: is the future set in stone? Can we change it? Fast forward to 2002 where Spielberg and company took the themes established by Dick and developed them into a critique of where the future is heading and how it will effect society and individuals. Aesthetically and thematically the critique centers around romanticism versus existentialism. As broad as these two arenas are, the angle that each is given in the film to support the story offers a deep cutting commentary on how society shapes us and what we’d have to do in order to overcome the negative influences that can push us into a dark, hopeless, existential hole as well as a possible answer to the question first posed by Dick 64 years ago.

Check out Lorerunner (and his Stream channel). He does ruminations on Star Wars/Trek (books, games, series, movies), movies, games, series, and general discussion. Also has his own setting (The Imperium) that he reads and talks about. It's barely advertised, but he's got a podcastgen page for MP3's of everything[?] but his streaming channel's content. Very helpful during the workweek since the way he talks doesn't distract much. Seriously, search for your favorite game/movie and add "lorerunner" after. See if you learn something new about it, especially if he did a Lorerun or Classic Run. Also, Joseph Anderson. Bruh. Straight forward, long, and without the childishness of others.

That being said, the argument that without a god anything is permissible is just plain wrong. Even without god you can empathize with the suffering of another by close consideration of what causes you suffering. In my view, suffering is the primary concern and intent is the only metric by which to measure the morality of any action. Furthermore I would argue that a belief in god is not only unnecessary for moral action and compassion, but many times detrimental to moral inclinations. In the presence of a god who is all powerful and who's word is final, any action is permissible, even the most heinous crimes against humanity, if it is in pursuit of that god's word. And to be held in check by a fear of hell does not give you the true moral measure of a man. It is in the absence of the threat of eternal damnation that moral action has any value - when you are not held at the proverbial gun point. People who argue that in the absence of god all things are permissible, conveniently forget about all of the bombings, rapes, murders, torture, burnings, and all other types of human suffering which are the direct cause of the presence of god - centuries of these actions justified by this belief. We don't need a god. We need common sense, compassion, self-awareness, and cognitive empathy. We need to understand that conscious suffering is the metric to target in our efforts to be more moral animals.

I have to ask: is there a reason films and literature revolving around technology that predicts the future always ends up predicting their own destruction? I have noticed this *trope of precognition being ultimately self destructive.* The precog’s prophecies leads to the shutting down of the system, the machine in PKD’s Paycheck also predicts its own destruction. The AI in the Hulu plus show Devs also ultimately predicts a series of events leading to its own destruction. Is this a commentary on the self defeating nature of existentialism and post modernism in favour of something more hopeful?

Very well done display of complex and difficult philosiphies. The "pandemic" we are currently dealing with is the product of existentalist crisis and the endless thirst for power by the few. The big brother Tech that "sees through walls" in the future no doubt upon us in many forms, from "smart cities" "smart grids" and "smart dust", "0 carbon"everything, autonomous traceable cars, boarder walls, "vax passports", along with pandemic forced data grabs of all manor, and perhaps most disturbing of all, a liquid concoction that they so desperately want to inject into each of our bodies. Its not a stretch to assume this "mrna" dose is trackable/traceable and likely worse. It is plain to see the master plan unfolding before us, and many simply walking obliviously into this coming downfall of humanity even chipping in and snitching on friends and neighbors as was the case in Stasi occupied East Germany during the cold war. Let's CHOOSE to say NO to this future, stand our ground, and not submit to the whims of global rulers. If you doubt any of this is upon us and they are just doing all this for "your safety", your own indoctrination is to blame.

@@broderickbunnell2115 your so called "shadow" is very narrowly defined, what about the other things you didn't consider? Lust? Desire to take revenge? Wrath? Desire to get rich? Etc, given that "the shadow is the repressed part of our being", aren't those things part of the shadow? and if so, then does embracing the shadow mean accepting that you have those things? I think the idea of "embracing" the shadow is trivial as long as "embracing" it and "acting on it" are two separate things. Because if we all embrace and act on our "shadows" then, behold, the purge.

YT often shadow-bans, deletes & hides (unless I hit the "sort by" tab) most of my comments, whether short or long, on Liberal or Conservative videos, if I'm one of the first or last ppl to comment, and whether or not there are 20 comments, or over 2k. So, I write for myself. I've grown & can see how I've improved as a person. The mere fact that I'm not influenced by "likes" or replies, lets me know I'm on the right track to self-reflection, and not absorbed in the Social Media world of what others think of me. I WOULD like feedback, though. Free exchange of ideas is essential to humanity, and the censorship that the tech oligarchs impose on us is killing that & along with it a chunk of our vital sense of "self". *I have been DISAPPEARED.* My Tweets are NOT visible (and I do NOT mean they're hidden behind a "Sensitive Warning" screen~ They are just GONE). I haven't been on FB in ages, ever since they started shutting down Private Groups for things that Mark Zuckerberg simply didn't agree with (school-of-choice, Harvard denying admission to Asians, etc.), and I began an Instagram acct. but I'm just not dedicated to Social Media. My 2¢ is that Hollywood is backed by politicians whose sole purpose is power & control. Money is tool for that, so it's used often as a means to that end~ Producers & directors will take quality literature and turn it into slop that appeals to the masses by hiring mega-stars & paying them multi-million dollars for one movie, add some CGI effects, and maybe do some shots on exotic locations that cost a fortune just to hype the film even more. It's ALL a distraction~ Because heaven forbid we recall that time when we were young & faced with a simple choice of "good" OR "bad". Telling a lie, or telling the truth, even when telling the truth was going to get us into trouble... but we did it anyway, because we're basically good ppl. And that time the store clerk wasn't looking & our friend wanted us to steal that candy bar. We didn't. Because we're GOOD. We've done BAD things, too, but they want us thinking of ONLY the BAD things we've done, NEVER the GOOD. *We are ALL GOOD PEOPLE WHO DO BAD THINGS ONCE IN A WHILE, NOT bad people who do good things once in a while.* If you go looking for bad things, you will find nothing but bad things. (RDP: I just found your channel bc YT put it into my recommendations [lol... they got something right!]- THANK~YOU for a GREAT VIDEO! I can't wait to watch ALL OF THEM!)

A fascinating essay that once again impresses me with a different but compelling reminder of how film can communicate meaning that is as useful to the individual as it is to the culture that produced it. I ended up watching it and discovered it's a very different film then how it was perceived at the time in opposition to another film like Blade Runner. Your discussion of the postmodern mood and alienation seems to hinge an a different interpretation then I've seen discussed in critical theory, mostly in how they theorize it as being more than just a loss of faith in long narratives, but in the way instrumental reason leads to a totalitarianism that starts to hinder humanity. Overall I'm most interested in how your use of Jungian shadows and myths to explain the way humans need to confront their darkness in order to become whole is very different from the current trend that see's the history as having created the world that imposes injustice and needs to be confronted as a collective. I would be very interested to hear your response to a historian's explanation of Sarte and the inner struggle to be free that becomes rooted not in finding grace, but being a revolutionary. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qW2Vx82tlLisaMo.html I look forward to your thoughts.

Can somone explain this, when John's wife comes to meet lamar after John was imprisoned, ... during the conversation she says (to lamar), "you know why ***JOHN**** came to work with you???.....".... Lamar says, "SEAN?" ( John's son) ....(I can only think thar may be lamar was the one who took sean, and hence, slip off toungue (guilty conscious).....he says 'Sean') Any other explanation????

You fulfilled the review this movie needed a deep in-depth look at minority report compared to reality and compared to other film settings for instance dark city and minority report feels the same almost in my opinion

@@TimofeyMarko i remember it now. i've seen so many videos about Jacob's Ladder that forgot about their video for an hour. if you need a recommendation, i would suggest you to watch RagnarRox's Jacob's Ladder video if you haven't watched it. he covers it so well and it's a great video overall. i hope Real Dimensional Pictures uploads it again

I had thought it was pre-cogs? Like precognitives, which would mean Anderton isn't one of them. Pre-crime was the division though. That being said, it's be a LONG time since I read the story or watched the movie.

One thing, the constant *drugged ghost effect* editing with a soulless narration is a headache-inducing nightmare to sit through X_X Besides that, I truly appreciate the extensive research on the film, is one of my favorites! One of the best in Tom Cruise's career in my opinion.

I blame that one English teacher I had for making me hyperaware of mispronunciation. "Raskonilkov" should definitely not have bothered me as much as it did lol. "Kiroskiro" was only once, but the name.. I wish I didn't notice shit like that. On an unrelated note, science has shown that the makeup of Insane Clown Posse is the most effective at preventing face scanning technology from identifying you. So if you're ever really trying to prevent identification, becoming a Juggalo with sclera contacts for a day might cover your tracks.
