Minnesota's year without a winter: 1877

It’s been almost 150 years since Minnesota had a December approaching this one for warmth. Minnesota scenery is dominated by the colors brown and green late into December 2023.

A point to ponder: Three years after the "winter that wasn't" came the "Snow Winter" of 1880-81, that Laura Ingalls Wilder talks about in her book entitled "The Long Winter." One never knows...

I have seen a bunch of videos on Laura Engles books and Stores.. My Third Grand Teachers were neighbors to the Engles in MN where the Little House in the Big Woods was. They were also offered to buy stocks in Cocoa Cola , but said it tasted terrible and declined to buy any stocks.

Minnesota winters can go all over the place. When I lived there from 82 to 86 we had a normal winter in 82-83. We had an absolute record-breaking winter in 83-84, and then the next two winters were so warm refrigeration trucks had to be brought in so that St. Paul could have some ice sculptures for the carnival. Warm winners are not unusual, nor catastrophic winters. That’s the joy of living in the upper Midwest.

It was pretty warm alright, but I am looking at the data for that winter and it was not like this. This year the lowest temp for the season has been 8. By this time in 1980 we'd had 12 days with lows colder than that. The lpw on Christmas 1980 was -12. December 1980 had 3 days over 40. We've had 16 this month., 4 of those over 50. As far as not having snow goes though, that was a remarkable winter. The only time we had more than an inch on the ground was 2/1/81-2/15/81.

Hey Tex, we love the winter up here and are built to enjoy it unlike Texass. Lived there 21 years nothing is set up for the winter months and people just sit inside waiting for the February, March warmth. BTW, enjoy it when the drought takes out your reservoirs and there is no water, then enjoy your climate change.
