Minn Kota Ulterra, Automatic Stow/Deploy and So Much More!

The Minn Kota Ulterra has been around for many years. It never ceases to amaze me how people walking through show aisles will literally stop and watch in amazement as the trolling motor automatically stows or deploys! Many people are new to angling, boats, and trolling motors so it’s well worth the look to do a more recent review. In this video from the 2023 Toronto Boat Show, we will demonstrate the operating systems for the Ulterra using the remote, a networked Humminbird unit, and the foot pedal. The Ulterra comes with a remote and foot pedal included. The Minn Kota Ulterra is worth its weight in gold for anglers fishing in rough water. You won’t have to battle a bouncing front end as you try to adjust, stow, or deploy your trolling motor. People who are less mobile and not as young as they used to be will truly appreciate the benefits of the Minn Kota Ulterra!

Great as usual Steve. Love my ulterra. I keep up on the maintenance and shaft lube and never had a problem. I did add the micro remote and use that a lot or give to another person in my boat. Sure saves thumb fatigue and so much lighter around my neck. Also have the phone app. I like they have so many options of operation.

Thanks Cowboy Jack, I always appreciate your wisdom and kind words. I had a gentleman at the show order a micro remote for similar reasons at the show.

Another well done informative video Steve. I've had an Ulterra 80 lb. thrust since they first came out. Only thing I can not run unit unless I have the foot pedal hooked up to the unit. There's times I wish I could run without. being up in age was my main reason for this direction on my trolling motor not wanting to go for a dip in chilly water. I can fish at the back of the boat and control the trolling motor. Thanks Minn Kota!

Thanks Brian, the Ulterra is very popular for a lot of reasons! I wish my brother had one on his boat when we fish walleye on Lake Erie.

I run a 2021 Terrova I-Pilot Link. I've added the micro remote and I also down loaded the I-Pilot Blue Tooth App to my I-Phone. Having multiple options for controlling my Terrova is a comfort. The Helix, the touch screen remote, the micro and my phone, redundancy. The best option for Minnkota and Humminbird units are Steve Chiasson youtube videos.

Thanks Duke, your wisdom and kind words are always very much appreciated! The micro remote definitely seems to be a popular option as well as the phone app. I am working on a Terrova video as well. Thanks again for your kind words about my channel, what a great way to start my day!

Love this motor. Have a 18.5' Lund Fisherman - should have gone with the 72" but would have needed to add a battery, to add a battery I would have needed to find the space, upgrade wiring, swap out charger to a 4 bank..... The tradeoff is a wash. This motor tied into my HB Helixes makes life a lot easier. Follow the contour and jog are great features to have. FYI this motor can't support a 360 or live transducer attached to it - it will damage it as its only strong enough to retract the motor/transducer, the tolerances are too tight.

That’s awesome you are enjoying your Ulterra, it’s a great trolling motor. I had to do a lot of rearranging to get 5 31 series batteries in my boat but it was definitely something I wanted to do. I was going to put a section in about universal mounts for M360 and/or MegaLive but opted to keep the video shorter. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and wisdom with the Ulterra. Every little tip helps people who view the channel videos.

It sure would be nice if a 12V version for smaller boats was available. I always feel funny about asking the front person in my boat to raise and lower my motor...if they physically can. My wife just can't do it, so I always have to climb around her to do it myself. It's such a pain when you're moving around a lot on the lake.

Steve, just a little bit of constructive criticism, Your voice keeps going loud, then soft. Do you use a small wearable microphone? I think the reason for up and down in voice is caused by your proximity to video equipment and the voice pickup. A wearable microphone with bluetooth will eliminate this, as I have seen in other videos.

I appreciate your suggestion Brian, at the shows there is always a hum in the background. I had to do a few voiceovers and that also caused voice fluctuations. I appreciate the suggestion, someone else almost commented on my voice fluctuations too.

I have a 18.5' fibeglass Boston Whaler with a bow rail. Is it possible to tilt the motor to clear the bow rail prior to raising it? I only have 17" of clearance between the top of the sliding mount to the underside of the bow rail. I need to tilt the motor so the control head will clear the bow rail prior to vertically raising the motor. If this isn't feasible with the Ulterra, is it possible to do this on the Terrova with the manual assist to tilt (approximately 10 degrees) and clear the bow rail prior to moving the shaft vertically?

Hi C M, hard to say for sure, your best bet is to take your boat to a Minn Kota dealer and have them look at it. Where the motor is mounted will factor into the angles that the motor stows and deploys.

High Steve, can you tell me why all Ulteras make a super load noise turning to the right? This has got to be a problem with all of them. I have a love, hate relationship with mine. WISH I DID NOT BUY IT.

I was trying to give an overview of what the remote can do with the Ulterra. There is a remote for the IPilot Link version and a different one for the I Pilot. I am not clear what you meant by the wrong one?

One of the worse trolling motors in the world. I bought one the first day on the water deployed it an fished all day but it wouldn't stow. U have to take it apart when its a mechanical failure like that. Had some people help me took it back. Down sized to spot lock. No stow an deploy haven't had a problem since.

Many people will disagree with you on this one. Like anything else nothing is perfect and there may be an occasional issue. The uniqueness of the automatic stow and deploy features make the Ulterra an attractive option. The new Quest Ulterra has been redesigned and improved for better performance.
