It's called luxury beliefs. The richer you become, the more you can afford to side with the establishment. Right now, it's fashionable to have the exact same stance as the progressive left, because that is the history of progressivism and the left. They have always been the elite of society. They have never actually been blue collar, the working middle class, or even close to the rest of us. I don't see al being someone who can hold down a job, grow crops, or build a canal. He can afford to have beliefs that do not actually affect his life. But start putting illegal migrants in his house, and he would be the first person to complain. Also, the media industry is run by a certain group of people. And these people make the rules of what you can and cannot talk about.
