Minimalist Photography | In the Field w/ Nikon Z7II
In this landscape photography video I practice minimalist photography. I use my Nikon Z7II and encounter beautiful photography conditions at the coast. I made a mistake with my first composition and the next 2 were average, however the final image is the keeper of the morning. 10% off your first Squarespace website or domain: www.squarespace.com/heaton.

Ahhhh, that drone shot of the sunrise happening above the clouds contrasted against the world you were shooting below was brilliant. Great idea!

I normally LOATHE drone shot because they are a photography youtube cliché, but even I thought that this was clearly the best part of the whole video
It must be really hard to come up with ideas for videos especially when you try to do one every week. I have to say that I admire that even if you didn’t feel like the weather was good enough for photography, you went out there and at least tried! I would enjoy a video with your thought process on the filming part because I know how hard it is to film yourself and try to get nice images on the photography side of things. I know you get this a lot Thomas, but thanks for the inspiration you gave me!🙏 I’m having the time of my life trying to mimic (looking up on you) what you do in my own style. Thanks for that!🙂
It is good that there is someone out there making videos like this. Thanks, Thomas

I bought a pair of fishing waders for my water based shoots - best bit of kit ever!
Got a new word (2) for my vocabulary! Sea Fret. Thanks as always.
I’ve found that the times I’ve thought, “I should go back home,” are the days I’ve had surprising success with my photography. Perhaps it’s because my expectations aren’t preconceived and I am more open to whatever I discover. Nice work!
4:57 - Damn, that was awesome!
A Video about maximizing minimalism! A truely philosophical approach to landscape photography.
Ouuhff!!! the last one!
As soon as I saw beach and minimalism I was half expecting the Hasselblad to come out. Beautiful images that have a lovely quiet feel to them.

Cool video, loved that you used our drone to go find the sun! I saw you put your backpack on the wet sand and said to myself, you are a better man than I, there is now way I would lay my backpack on wet sand. Cheers!
i'm loving your new yellow bag!!!
The drone shot!
Final image is sublime. The muted colours, leading line of the retreating waves, and the subtleness of the mist shrouded buildings, gives the image atmosphere. An excellent image.
Love the videos, love this video, but the audio seemed to be really strange in some places. Most notably after 7:30, where it gets almost ridiculously loud and is definitely clipping.

Came here to say the same thing, brilliant vid content-wise but the sound balance is off
That last shot was indeed the point. Nice pastel colors and lovely feel.
to help stop the tripod from sinking I used old CD's to widen the foot print from a point to a flatter larger surface and it helps. everybody has old CD's laying around. I carry three in my bag.
The last shot at 11:00 was the most pleasing one in my opinion. Beautiful leading line from waterline receding into the hazy edge of town. Like the opening scene from Chariots of Fire.
Love your videos man! The godfather of youtube photographers 😁
Your videos are amazing, you have a great passion for photography and watching your videos I can learn a lot because I am in Vietnam in Asia my approach to photography is quite new. You have inspired me. Thank you!
Great video, I've seen many sunrises down there working for the council.
That drone shot was such a good look at the other side of the things.
Calming photos!! Beautiful!!!
Love Whitley bay in this vid. And a lovely set of images.
The shot with the solitary rock away from the line of rocks is my fav. Really speaks to being alone or wanting to be included.
I have to disagree with your comment about how sometimes there is such a thing as too minimalist, I thought the pic you were referring to was utterly beautiful. Best one in the vid.
great video! I love sunrise photography for all the reasons you addressed here as well. Thanks for sharing!
That drone shot of of the sunrise was very satisfing to watch
I'm not really a photographer but I LOVE taking photos in fog! Great Video!
Always come back to your channel - such beautiful videos. Thanks for sharing your passion and talent!
Thanks Thomas for the video, the 2nd stone one is my favourite
Love the last image, minimal pastel calm 😎
You made the best of an unfavorable morning. Glad you pushed through! 🙂
Beautiful photos, the second one especially
Lovely drone shot.
The final image is superb!
I agree about the serenity of getting out on your own. Sometimes you want scream to the world look what I just did. Well you did it. Love this video!
Excelent Thomas Heaton.
Hi Thomas, beautiful video, it said it all. My wife and I live in Sheffield, about as far as you can get from the coast, but we both have a thing about the sea. Our last visit to the coast was to Great Yarmouth and to Cromer last March. I thought I wasn't going to get anything, but standing still for a while and just slowly looking round and the images almost formed themselves. It was quiet at both places and that's how I liked it. The weather was cold and a band of hale swept down the coast at Great Yarmouth and that raised the atmosphere still more. Photography was challenging because the light kept changing, but some of the shots would have looked so different on another day. It was beautiful.
As always, therapeutic to watch...
Not very often you get what you are expecting, the ability to adapt to conditions can make or break a shoot. Lovely images Thomas, especially the view back to town 👌
Last one is lovely.
Another very enjoyable outing cheers.
Am I the only one distracted by the back on the sand? Lol I’d be so paranoid about getting sand on my kit. Though I know it’s tough to photograph and video for KZread so hats off to you . Omg lol you keep putting the bag on the wet sand! Am I OCD? Is this video about photography on that lovely bag on the sand . Love your channel btw.
That drone shot.... I'm speechless.
This is a really beautiful video. Superb shots in challenging conditions.
Sorry I am commenting early in the video but this intro is just so beautiful Thomas! Looking forward to see today's shots!
I finally used your Squarespace code last week, nice to give you a (small) tip for all the vids I've watched over the years, cheers Tom!
Beautiful photos! I too arrive early to avoid the tourists walking the beach. I love the pristine sand and yes, I'll ask people to avoid walking through my composition. Many comply with no grumbling while a few complain and walk around me. I disappoint the dogs running the beach because I don't carry treats. However, still something magical about arriving before sunup watching the light dance across the waves.
Sometimes simple is the best! 🎉❤
Arrh your right you just can’t beat them minimal shots! Last shot was beautiful bud
Thomas, I love your effort to get a non white picture walking in the fog. :) Love your images.
Really fantastic video, great to see the thought process behind the images. The last shot is really lovely indeed 😊
Nice images all, but that last is fantastic. It's so important to sometimes "relinquish control" and take what comes. Also love the drone shot, unexpected and beautiful.
that last photo was so dang lovely. well done!
Very nice last shot! I quite fancy the second square one, with the pool of stones, even if the light is not as great, I find the mood and composition more pleasant (and I am honest, I love the square format). Cheers!
Nice video. We know it’s hard to come up with something new every week, but you seem to do a good job doing that.
Nice video Tomas, more and more I am turning away from the grand view and taking and enjoying a more minimalist style. I just got back from a very enjoyable trip to the Badlands National Park.
Interesting color for the backpack. At first, and just for a second, I thought you were wearing a life jacket on your back.
I do love the Bay Thomas, been down a few times at sunrise, with slightly better sunrise than you had
Lovely work yet again Thomas, I actually quite liked the 3rd photograph just really nice and simple and hard to hate. That first photograph it felt like I wanted to look off to the right hand side of the frame, not because of the empty space but the rocks in the foreground feel like an arrow in a sense. I hope your boots aren't too wet and smelly now.
Magnetic filters..good choice.
Liked your "too" minimalist shot - would be interesting to see a B&W conversion, too. I think I must have been down the coast on Roker beach the same day - certainly the same conditions - but came away with some lovely images all the same.
Really nice and valid episode, so helpful. The background music was occasionally a bit harsh for my Bluetooth hearing-aids.... almost distorted

Had the same on my bluetooth headphones.
I think I know what day that was. I was also going to go to that same beach at the same time, but decided to head inland to the woods near Morpeth. You made the better call because the mist didn't reach very far inland and there was none at all by the time I got there at sunrise. At least I didn't put you off your filming though 😁
Common Thomas! Never, ever, put your back to the sea! Don't want to see you washed away mate!
First "like" and than I watch 😉
Was the drone shot through the clouds to reveal the sun taken by you Thomas or stock.....classic movie shot, a la Superman !!! Great video as ever, great photography.
damn thomas, that thumbnail is so good!
I’m not sure I agree with the comments on first image, I liked the empty space but and thought you were going to say that the problems was the lines in the foreground having a different angle to those in the middle. Feels like they’re pulling me off to the left when the rest are taking me down the centre. Easy to be an armchair critic though, I wouldn’t have taken anything nearly as good 😂
Intro looks like Death Stranding!
First light is almost always the best time to be up and about. It's chicken soup for the soul.
Thomas carrying the BananaBag...
The best landscape photographer of our generation . period . Love from India!
Lovley video. Have you ever thought about taking photos with the drone? I have a 9 shot pano printed wall size and the quality is stunning. Just thought a photograph above the mist of the sun would have been beautiful.
Great stuff, always enjoy your minimalist work. Can I ask what bag you're using? Noticed it in the video before last and don't remember seeing it before
Loving hearing your thoughts as you are creating magic with your camera! Would be great if you'd share the make and model of your camera rucksack. Sublime, to me , images, thanks for sharing them.

Hi Thomas great Video. Quick question about your tripod make and model and what ball head you use Thank you

Great video Tom , what is the new yellow bag you are using ? Have done a video on it ? Thanks . Chris

Great video. One question (gear related, sorry). What backpack is that?
You need a sandbag my friend. Lock down those sticks.
When is shimoda going to officially release this colour backpack? I've already noticed few of you with it. Not even hiding it 😂
Who made the music that you used in the intro? Btw, the first b roll image is awsomme!
is shimoda coming out with a new color of backpack? I hope so, that color is amazing.

It is the new Shimoda action X V2. It hasn´t been announced yet, but should be on June 1st. It will be available in 4 colours - green, black and new ones yellow and teal. I´m curious, what will be different from the first one🤔
Sometimes I use stack photo technique and masking to remove people from my landscape photos.
Last time I sent my drone up in fog, it refused to come back down! I think the visual sensors saw it as "ground". Eventually found that flying in circles with the stick on full descent made it come down (very slowly) 😂
I hear if you put CD’s down under your tripod feet it helps keep the sand from moving your tripod. 😊
I care a Little bit about the More weight and size of the Z8 in comparison to Z7 II. But Z7 II with L Bracket is nearly as Heavy and big as Z8. I do Not Need L Bracket. So on the other Hand it should´ Not be worse to take the Z8 😊
Cool video Tom as always but the music is clipping brutal on my end. Just letting you know.
Sunrise is definitely the best time to get out and shoot. And I'm an antisocial photographer... I own it haha. I actually the like the first image most, unbalanced and all.
Poland ! im first ;D
I like the "too minimal" shot the most, but the last one has a special vibe, so a very close second place for me. The music was far too loud in some places, or the voice too low overall (but it seemed fine when looking at my speaker settings).
