This took a lot of courage Kraig. I can highly relate to your search for the ideal “filtered” life. Through divorce, parenting, new relationships, and owning/running a business I’d like to think I’ve made a really intentional go at life. And now this is coming full circle and it feels like I have an inability to connect with people that aren’t aligned with beliefs of my own in turn. This has all been really enlightening and I’ll just leave you with this. Keep up your pursuit. Keep pressing into these introspective and honest thoughts. And it’s ok to cut yourself some slack sometimes.

SSaini Rescuing a grandma from a house fire is courageous. Opening up to other people, in person or on KZread, is courageous as well. Most people, most males especially, are afraid to open up and feel vulnerable and talk about feelings. Talking about feelings and rescuing grandmas are clearly completely different actions, they both frighten people, therefore, they’re both courageous.

Well said, and I’d add: keep the introspection, but ultimately, if you realize you’ve lost the ability to connect, then what you need is to add some “extrospection” i.e., direct your energy outward. Reinvest in new relationships, put yourself in situations that require you to compromise for the sake of harmony with others. That is the antidote to a perfectionistic isolationist life.

Hey Kraig, watched you for a number of years and I think despite everything and all your different ideas you’ve shared over the years, the biggest thing I admire and really like (don’t get too much validation here... haha). is your authenticity. So even in the times going through the extreme sell offs and things you’ve navigated to do with minimalism and self awareness, you were still being authentic about yourself and your journey. And so I realise after watching this and sensing some of the loneliness and the struggle you’ve been through to get to where you are now, where the grass is that tiny bit greener, is that I like your endearing personality and your truthfully optimistic outlook through each part of your journey! Keep on brother! That search for greener grass is not in vein and to understand that relationships are a key aspect of one’s overall well-being, well that’s an incredible realisation and something to pursue!

Thanks for this, Kraig. Yeah, my story has a lot of similarities, from the aeropress --> espresso machine --> aeropress --> espresso machine routine to full-time travel only to realize that it wasn't filling the void and moving back home (where I now have something like two dozen houseplants and way, way more stuff than I could ever travel with). Realizing that it was time to just pick a place and put down roots took way too long for me, but I'm definitely in a better place for having done so. Sounds like NYC probably isn't that place for you (I realized the same pretty quickly during my two years there before moving out west), so I hope you find a home that feels right. Nowhere will be perfect. Thanks for sharing such a personal story and not glossing over the raw and uncomfortable bits.

I think I put down roots before I grew out of my childhood. yeah, I'm that type.....never saw the need to fill any voids.....I guess I've always treated life as "boy am I glad I'm alive and not in a concentration camp" and I usually go about my day being fine with myself. I do have a manual espresso machine, however, and I grind my own beans. I just enjoy the art itself for its own sake. Could never live in NYC myself. I think my general reaction to the place was a series of "wtf," "really?" "oh, so that's a thing" and "people talk like that in real life." But the things you can't enjoy, you tolerate, and put out of mind. That's minimalist living. Clearing the mind. Nowhere is perfect, which means everywhere is perfect.

I hope to meet you one day and go on a hike adventure with you.

Hey Kraig, been following you for a few years and I just wanted say that your hiking videos are by far the best work you’ve put out. I’m sure it’s difficult being so vulnerable publicly, but being able to admit past mistakes and be so reflective and self-aware is one of things so many people here admire about you. So much of what I see on here is so shallow and self-indulgent - so it’s refreshing to hear someone saying what the rest of us are all actually thinking! All I can suggest is that you continue doing what makes you happy and brings you creative fulfilment. And if you ever decide to come to the UK, I’ll have to buy you a beer!

Also I should say, I understand his trepidation about his impulse to over-share. I also share this tendency, and yes it’s probably related to narcissism. That said, I do think there is a great value to people being this open. Hearing Craig reflect like this encourages my own reflection. Our minds are constantly playing tricks on ourselves. We constantly seek fulfillment and happiness in all the wrong ways, and hearing him talk about this is valuable.

  • @NatalieRutherford
    @NatalieRutherford4 жыл бұрын

We love a self reflecting influencer! When you said "narcissism" I was like "THANK GOD he realized it!" :) . From a fellow perfectionist minimalist I've had to develop some mindfullness around when I'm obsessively decluttering in order to avoid something I'm overwhelmed by. Say I'm behind at work or something - because I'm a perfectionist I don't think anything less than perfect is going to cut it so if I think something looks too daunting to do perfectly I just avoid it. I've been trying to be KINDER to myself - just TRY. 80% is fine - GOOD even. I concur with other commenters. Don't be too hard on yourself. Anyway when I realize I'm urgently decluttering (or any of my other coping mechanisms), try to pause and figure out what you're actually stressed about. Another tip is to not do anything in the heat of the moment (be it buying something or throwing something away). Whatever it is can wait a week! Good luck Kraig!

I've noticed over the past years or two that you have been putting out less content and was genuinely concerned but I saw it as you finding yourself when you put out hiking videos that were like 40 minutes long. It's unsettling as a content creator trying to be financially stable especially during this pandemic and I'm so happy to see that you are thriving and I support you 100%. I think what people like is authenticity and that's what i see in every one of your videos. Kraig, I think everyone - in the first world at least, goes through phases like you did in your younger adulthood. I know I did. There is a focus on materialism that is so compelling for us in modern society, that it's almost impossible not to succumb at some point in everyone's lives. I am of the belief that only purpose can rid a person of materialism. Purpose can be a child or a singlemindedness around your work, or a regular donation of your time and expertise to do good for others. Purpose to me can be anything really, as long as it a) does no harm, and b) directs your attention outward towards others rather than inward. I love the fact that you've been so upfront about your thoughts on where you were and what you've learned from it. It looks to me that you've found purpose and that is what has driven and will continue to drive your success from here. As always love the content and look forward to the next video.

The blunt force trauma in this video!!!! Dude, i feel it and im loving the honesty. My pivotal moment was when i took up hiking. Because from there, I worked out as a result to how fit I was getting from hiking in NY/NJ. Which transformed my body, so I started eating healthy, and now i feel really good about myself. That's bled into my work life. I actually create videos now, have a schedule, client calls, and man... I wish there were more hours in a day and that certain things didn't take so long. But... here we are. Minimalist, hiking filmmakers. Maybe that's a stereotype, but I truly believe I'm as happy as I've ever been.

I discovered your channel a few days ago and I already love the kind of content you put out there. Knowing that this difference compared to the usual travel videos could come from something that does not make you fell well is saddening. Already it is obvious how the journeys you show us are way more complicated than what it is filtered to the viewer, due to the amount of physical and mental job behind. Like, you are not on vacation and only have to enjoy the view. But in a sense, this minimalism did something contrary to what you say: you give us at least as we give you as followers through appreciation. I am in a phase of my life also when I am trying to find my balance. I can just say, stay strong, we love what you do, don't just watch the views and likes, it remains special and a gem on KZread, and focus on what is not going as it should also.

"Minimalism" is a uniquely 1st world pursuit. So is "finding yourself". In most parts of the world, it's a way of life cos people don't have sh*t. That's why they are happy. Every thing that you "own", not matter how big or small, requires maintenance (adds costs) and protection (from theft). In stark contrast, "Hoarding" is also a uniquely 1st world phenomena.

Actually, hoarding is not only a first world problem. People who struggle to make ends meet will also accumulate mountains of stuff over time (like half used cans of paint, old clothes, broken items and so on) hoping that one day they can reuse something and save a little bit of money this way. The quality and value of the items differ, but the problem is quite similar.

I discovered your video on Picos de Europa a few months ago and it's haunted me with its beauty ever since then. It is an absolute masterpiece and made my boyfriend and I go hike in Picos this summer for the first time (we live only a few hours away from it, in Spain). You've touched people's minds and hearts, Kraig. You might feel alone but you are not. I felt that way a couple years ago and it's taken me so long to understand that I need to embrace the marvellous person I am, and so do you. When you accept yourself as the amazing and imperfect human being you are, everybody else starts seeing it as well. Thanks so much for your work and honesty.

We always think we’re alone, we’re the only ones going through some sort of something. I love when people share personal things going on in their lives. It’s always eye opening when you sit back and think “I’m not alone in this, someone else is definitely experiencing this”. Thanks for being real.

This was such a great video! It really makes you reevaluate what is actually important in your life. Also Kraig, if you feel that you burned a lot of bridges in your last couple of years, go rebuild them. People change, perspectives change, and there’s no harm in trying to rekindle relationships. Thanks for the great video!

Great thoughts and words, Kraig. You're doing some (simple to you, I'm sure, but not to most people) things that will ultimately prove to have created a more fulfilling life when you look back on it. One, and most important: reflecting in a total, open, honest way. That's the only thing that will allow you to change, or improve, or grow, or whatever you choose to call it. And two: seeing the entire world, every corner, every trail, every height and depth. And even though you film and share the parts that are spent alone, you still interact with people at every step, from airports and planes to rental car counters to hotels to shuttles to people you meet at a hot spring. You're making your own life, with active and purpose and intention, and you are examining it as you do so. I'd say you're doing it right.

Thank you for your transparency Kraig, and showing that being real is a process of trial and error, and evolution of effort trying to find what works and feels best for you, a real person. Your approach of just being transparent and honest about things shines as much as your beautiful cinematography.

These past few days I've been meditating to your videos, observing moment to moment, landscapes, places, sounds, footsteps, water streams, listening to the music. Truly being as I experience your work, its like magic, weather changes and transforms, you get tired and take rest, sounds appear, dogs greet you for pets . Try it out, put one of your videos and just try to see everything on it unfold by itself.

Hey Kraig, I was a subscriber to your channel a few years ago and watches your filmmaking videos all the time, and you were definitely one of my first inspirations. I stopped watching a lot of youtube over the last year or so once I got to college and lost track of your channel. Recently, I've been getting into hiking and love all your films, they are so relaxing and tell the story perfectly. It's really great to see you open up about your story with raw emotion, you've gained a tremendous amount of respect from me for that. Keep up your great work and keep your head held high!

Kraig, I began watching your videos at roughly the same time as this video - early 2017. I loved watching your lifestyle in New York and the aesthetic you presented in your videos. But over time, I slowly stopped paying attention to your content, like so many other creators similar to you. I didn't know it at the time, but I was suffocating myself with aspirational content that told me the story of the life I didn't have. But in the last few months, I have come back to your videos and I am moved by the beauty of your adventures. More than that, admire the honesty you have displayed in this video. Thank you - this video has definitely pointed out some big questions that I have to answer in regards to my own journey with minimalism and narcism.

I think it would be very hard to find another creator on KZread who is as open and honest as you. This video is quite honestly a masterpiece. Firstly the story telling of this video is wonderful I always find myself drawn through your videos and I do not even notice the time go, you truly create a wonderful story that doesn't just rely on nice shots but also great hosting and well put together clips. Secondly your honestly is powerful and refreshing in a world where social media is used to disguise you often use it as the opposite and shine a light on your vulnerabilities. Although I cannot fully relate with everything you are going through I truly emphasis and hearing you talk about your troubles with self; helps me in a strange way feel more comfortable with my own problems. Hard to describe but I think everyone on this earth has issues and the more we are open and honest about that the better we can all feel, knowing we are all just trying our best to navigate the life we were born into. Beautiful video and you are definitely my favorite creator on this platform.

Really moving, thanks for sharing your thoughts. I completely feel that need for continuous (and never ending) balance between minimalism - as a tool to be focused, creative, driven - and living a true, anchored life: full of community, surprises, mess. And all in all, requiring to let go of the control in every area of our lives, may them be material or relational. It is true that minimalism, as an obsession, can lead to narcissism, hyper-materialism and de-connection from the social, environmental and relational impacts of the decluttering processes we go through. Thanks for the beautiful, honest content as always !

Kraig, thank you for your vulnerability and honesty and it is humbling to see your personal growth happening in real time. I feel like there are many people that crave freedom and the absolute control (or illusion thereof) that the minimalist ideal ascribes too, but they often overlook the inherent difficulties like the ones you have mentioned, i.e. loneliness as a cost for freedom). The truth for me is whatever path you take (minimalism for freedom and family/relationships for support and stability), you will always have regrets not taking the other path - both having their own set of challenges and benefits. I guess the end goal for me is trying to live a balanced life with aspects of both of these paths with the realistic mindset the “grass is always greener” and the only thing we can really rely on is our experience in the present. Thanks again from a fellow adventurer,, and look forward to more videos! Cheers!

You're beautiful. You make beauty and share it. I often cuddle my daughter as she falls asleep warching your hiking videos. It's a sweet time. Thank you for that. I recently read that happiness is the feeling of the expansion of the self. Makes sense and maybe explains why creatives are often unhappy, bc we are more fine tuned in looking for expression. That's okay. It's not narcissism. Instead of happiness, seek joy which is the feeling of transcending the self. And as you have rightly deduced, this is best done in relationships. Take good care Kraig. Bless you.

Keep moving forward Kraig. You do help others by being true and honest. Being authentic is refreshing in social media. I have a KZread channel, but have not put anything out there for fear of the feedback that it was not good enough. I find joy in creating. I first found you when I was searching out drone videos. You are young and super creative. I went along for the ride on your many hiking videos. I was always blown away by the shots you captured and your editing style on your travels. Keep being true to yourself on the road to discovery. It's the journey... none of us know where it ends. Wish you all the best.
