Miniature Chicken Tractor (Justin Rhodes Chickshaw Mini Me Modified Design)

This is a video showing the build of our miniature chicken tractor. We got the plans from Justin Rhodes, Abundance Plus. Justin calls this the Chickshaw mini me.
About Us.
Follow us on our journey as we buy raw land in western North Carolina to start a farm. We are passionate about becoming more sustainable and self sufficient by growing our own food and building our homestead from the resources on our farm by milling our own lumber, using solar energy and spring water on our property. We want to accomplish this by organic gardening, permaculture practices, and using reclaimed and eco friendly materials as much as possible. We hope to inspire others as we share our knowledge about growing nutrient dense food, cooking delicious meals, and building a farm from the land, as we learn together as a family.

    Love the chick shaw! A pitched roof is a great upgrade. How many chickens realistically can be housed in this? The plans say up to 16 but that sounds like a lot. This would be my only coop and I'd be adding a large enclosed run to it

  • @GreenhavenFarmandHomestead

    Hi Juli! We have 9 chickens and they have plenty of room. We move it every day and move the electric fence around it so the girls are only inside the coop when they sleep and when they lay eggs. The only time they are all in there together is at night when they sleep on the roost. We have large heritage breed chickens, and I would put another 2 - 3 chicken in there before I felt it would start getting too crowded. If you had smaller chickens, you could probably do 16. As you may know they prefer to cuddle up tight anyway when they sleep.

    Thank you for watching. The plans called for 26" wheels but at the time of our build I could only find 24" wheels. I bought the wheels from Amazon, but I'm not really happy with the quality. The wheels have warped a little so I need to find a strong wheel that can handle the weight and my abuse. I provided the link to the wheels I purchased but I recommend trying to find a heaver duty wheel. Good Luck. Dan 24 Inch Wheels for Chicken Tractor

    I'm wondering do you put the warer and food inside? I was thinking of adding something to the side or under for food and water. The only issue with under would be droppings

  • @GreenhavenFarmandHomestead

    @GreenhavenFarmandHomestead

    2 жыл бұрын

    Great question! We started with a small open feeder inside but the hens were roosting in it and it got very dirty, so now we put their food on the ground each morning to encourage scratching. We hang a bucket of water on the outside of the tractor (that has nipples underneath) and that works the best. We move them every day.

    It’s hard to say because we used a lot of left over materials. But wheels were about $60, bolts for axles, set of hinges, wire and roof panels from Lowes about $300.

    Are the laying boxes open to the outside? I didn't see a protective cover and I'm wondering if they would be at risk of predators.

  • @GreenhavenFarmandHomestead

    @GreenhavenFarmandHomestead

    They are open to the outside but the boxes are locked in so a predator wouldn’t be able to pull out the boxes. But it’s easy for us to get the eggs. Thank you for watching.

    I would love to give you some advice on this, but it probably wouldn't be the best ;/ We just moved to our homestead in North Carolina from Florida, so we never had to insulate our chicken tractors before. Justin Rhodes live only about 15 minutes from us and I know he puts his chickens in a high tunnel for the winter. I think we will do the same. We just don't have one yet, but planning to build one before it gets too cold. Good luck! We love our tractor and it's still going strong!

    The 26" wheels are available at Northern Tool. You can order them online and they will ship them to you. I just built the ChickShaw 2.0 and that is where I got my wheels. If you want to build the bigger ChickShaw the link is available on YT. To get access to the build video you need to share the link with someone else and they you can have the video.
