    For the pulley/belt issue, you could use a setup similar to the Harley Davidson belt drive that uses kevlar reinforced belts (to prevent stretching) with teeth so they won;t slip on the pulleys (which are grooved to receive the teeth. Just a thought....

    Interesting project. I think you should try solid rubber wheels on the motor and track side, and then use tension springs to keep them together for traction, but have a way to pull back the tension from the spring to use for steering. This way you will have a long lift and sturdy system.

    Maybe the two belt be fine, three belts each side, with cast steel pulleys may work better. Great video and best to you Aceman307 on your track vehicle........................................................Ken

    Cool project dude, I love this sort of stuff. Normally I would say use a differential but your using what you have on hand. As for your belt problem could use timing belts for camshafts. You can pick them up for nothing and they're alot broader or grooved v belt but that would mean using different pulleys. One question, how did you sort out your wobble issue with the nuts and studding for the rear axles? Studding rarelt is ever straight and nuts are almost always never flat, but you know that by now - thansk again for posting - matt uk

    There's lots of bigger and also different-shaped belts available. I'd try Googling some transmission belt companies - if it's a big company suggest to them that they'd like to sponsor you??

    im just throwing this out there but how about using two 12 volt clutches from riding mowers that are used for the mowing deck. that way when you brake one side it disengages the clutch for that side and you dont have to use tensioners on the belts,. i may try it eventually but i was going to share that idea with you and see what you thought. very cool ride

    The best place to find the clutch's used would be on riding garden tractors for your lawn not all have them just look on the dash for that big p.t.o. button and if you like the used and needed replacement they're around 150.00 new I hope this helps your video is sure helping me.... peace

    Dude has done a very good job !!! shook the springs to clamp enough ... too loud .... so will result in the leash ... if not tighten only to slip the leash and will not be initiated !!I wait for the new video 11* to see my opinion in the move!!! subscribe....

    I think you are going to have to use some sort of a clutch on the drive wheel shafts. When you apply brakes in the direction you want to turn, the clutch on that side will disengage turning to that side. That's how mechanical bulldozers work.

    Aw man, you got it moving, soooo cooool. If you maybe get a smaller idler pulley so it will go in between the drive and trans pulley you can get more grip and will pull the belt into pulley groove harder. That's how I will try to do mine first. my theory is if there's no slippage to begin with there won't be any heat or stretch on the belt. you need about 2/3 surface area of grip though.

    ***** If I had to build it again I would position the engine about 6" more to the front giving more space in the back for larger pulleys. I think doubling up the pulleys and belts and reinforcing them should solve the problem. Have you checked out Tankman101 videos he is really clever with his fixes.

    I here yah, I'll be using 4 inch pulleys on mine but I have about 9 inches of space inbetween. I might be able to go larger on the pulleys about 1 inch maybe but I'm pretty sure I can run duel belts too. I think I thought of that. It's been a while when I did my last mockup on that part though. I need to redo my drive axles with the track sprockets anyways. But yah man You got it movin, just a minor setback. Hell when I did my frame I had to scrap the first center section. That's how we learn.

    Getting pullies was actually pretty hard. First I went to a heating supply company and their parts was pretty flimsy so I went to a small engine repair shop and I actually had to fight with the guy workin the counter just to open the book on pullies but yah I can get bigger one's from Tractor Supply. Did you use automotive belts or utility belts because they both are made differently. Auto belts have the string inside the rubber like a tire and a utility belt like for a riding mower are solid rubber with a wrapping around the outside only. Plus auto belts can handle tention of around 60lbs of pressure on them without stretching to give you an idea on belt design. I'm thinking the belts stretched because they heated up to much from slipping, not from pressure. maybe more pressure on the tentioner pulleys would help. Couldn't really hear what was going on with it.

    I think, considering your space constraints in there, you might be best off by pulling your current pulleys & replacing them with a "multi-v" belt+pulley setup (using a serpentine style belt) to give you a higher surface-area, but lower thickness (thus, lower heat generated) belt, fitting into about the same space, that's already reinforced pretty well against stretching by the fiber "backbone" that's generally attached to multigrooved belts.

  • @Aceman307

    Robherc H Thats a good idea I was looking at some serpentine pulleys at the junkyard. I would have to figure out how to route the belts. I am not sure they make a belt that small.

  • @MichianaFisherman

    Aceman307 The serp belts will fail faster than a v-belt if allowed to slip. If you let a serp get hot from slipping it's gone.

    Aceman307 I don't know your exact measurements, but if you check on vbeltsupply.com, I just found a 5-rib, automotive style serp. belt they sell at 20" pitch length, 20.75" outside length that I'm thinking would likely even be too small to use on your 4" pulleys ;) www.vbeltsupply.com/k-series-poly/k-series-poly?p=1 As for routing; looking at your pic of how you have your current V-belt routed, there would be no problem with routing a serp. belt the exact same way. Idler tensioner pulleys are almost always pressing against the smooth backs of serp belts & both of your drive/driven pulleys are directly adjacent to each other, so no problems there.

    MichianaFisherman I would tend to disagree some here, based on seeing several old cars squeaking their serp. belts without blowing them after having an alternator or water pump fail. However, I realize that there are exceptions to every case, so out of millions of cars, the 5-10 I've seen do that could just be the rare exceptions where a serp. belt stood up to that kind of abuse.

    Try snowmobile or utv/atv drive belts and pulleys. The parts should be simple on line to find as many junkyards for snow sleds belts are readily available in many stores and catalog/online stores. They are actually mad to slip on the centrifugal clutch. Nice and wide and nice and thick

    You need a 2in banded belt and pullys man and get a tensioner pully for a truck the douboe pully thing is a mistake bc one will get more tension always and the other will slip and the u get meat wad thats how i fixed my stump grinder no slip at all with tensioner engaged

    Bolting chain to the belt is almost certain to fail. Why not go to industrial chain altogether, with an idler roller. You can easily research chain and sprockets in the online machine supply catalogs.

  • @Aceman307

    @Aceman307

    Kevin Hornbuckle If you go with chain how will you allow it to slip for steering? If you check out Tankman101 he has a video on building a transmission from scratch for his tracked vehicle its for his 2/5 scale Sherman tank.

  • @kevinhornbuckle

    @kevinhornbuckle

    I wondered if that was the case. Perhaps there is a hydraulic hub that a sprocket can mount onto. Probably too complicated for this build. Wider belts like for a motorcycle belt drive. Or how about an idler roller that releases belt tension when you pull the brake handle.

    Kevin Hornbuckle In this video near the end I show the idler pulley that is able to release tension when you turn the steering left or right. I have to beef up the cables because the spring I am using for tension is very strong.
