Mini Split AC Install in Cargo Camper Conversion

This week, we installed a Pioneer home mini split air condition in our DIY cargo camper conversion! In this video, we walk you through our install with tips and tricks on installing your own mini split
As part of our journey to turn a 7x14 foot cargo trailer into a fully customized DIY camper / tiny home, we knew we needed air conditioning and what better way to cool a camper than with a residential air conditioning.
We hope you enjoy this video and learn something along the way. For full details, helpful how-to’s, and in-depth build guides, check out our website and start your own DIY cargo trailer camper conversion!

    Finally got it up and running. The only delays we had was because we realized we needed some extra parts (I’ll list that below) kzread.infoUgkxihMYiJNXcHdbH-7ihymsLz61l7jVyb5O . So we have a loft where our current hvac just couldn’t seem to keep cool during the summer. We have been using a window unit since we bought this house over 6 years ago (all the houses in this neighborhood were built in the 80’s and majority of the houses built like ours use a window unit). I hate window units because they are just so noisy and the one we had really only cools one side of the loft. I had contemplated upgrading our current HVAC, but with all the rising prices these days, it would take years before saving up enough to do that. With the advice of my father-in-law (used to run an HVAC business), he recommended we get an inverter instead. We thought we bought everything we needed, but there were just a few other parts we didn’t anticipate needing (which is what caused most of our delay). My friend and father-in-law did all the work to get it installed and running and now we have nice cool air circulating nicely throughout the entire loft. It is very quiet and even the outside unit is much quieter than our main HVAC unit. Saved ourselves thousands getting this.

  • @diycargotrailer

    @diycargotrailer

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@geraldwilliams3898 you can Google “wire gauge chart” and see what amps for what gauge and what length. Campers have either 30 or 50 amp hookups and really no reason to put in a 50 amp. So for a 30 amp, 12 gauge is probably my recommendation at least for the wiring from the hookup to the electric box. As for the interior, I did all the “big” stuff like ac ports, the fridge, and the mini split with 12 gauge and I did everything else like lights, pumps, 12v ports with 14 gauge. 10 gauge is definitely overkill for any application I can think of, especially in a camper.

    I like the enthusiasm here, and huge props for the self-confidence to tackle something like this. I think I'd run the piping straight in at the bottom. The clearance on the tongue jack also seems sketchy. I wonder if the forces associated with braking will cause any issues with the way the external unit is mounted. Will the top want to sway forward during braking, and push pressure on the mounts? Something to keep an eye on for the first year.

You may want to put some rubber membrane between the unit and the tongue for vibration protection for the unit.

They all seem to say the indoor unit should be at least 6 feet off the floor and have at least 6 inches of free space above. The unit being about 12 inches and my trailer having a 7 foot ceiling means I can't mount it at least 6 feet off the floor. I ask cause this is on my list for my ctc. Be sure to put a "sleeve" ( piece of pvc pipe" in that hole going into the trailer so the lines dont get F"ed up. Maybe run a weld along the metal mounting brackets cause I would not trust self tappers, just my opinion

  • @diycargotrailer

    @diycargotrailer

    Really depends on pricing. When I bought mine, the pioneer was like $700 and the Mr. Cool was like $1200. The vacuum pump and manifold were like a total of $100. So it definitely saved me some money but it just depends. I just looked on Home Depot website and the 9000 BTU mini split was about what I paid for the Pioneer so maybe that's a better option right now. All depends. Regardless, all the steps are exactly the same except for the vacuum pump part which now that I've done it and understand it is super easy. I think either option is a good option. As for the self tappers, they are really big ones. There are 3 in each bar and it's VERY secure. I'll keep an eye on it and make sure it stays that way. Can always go back with a weld later if needed. I don't own a welder though...

    Tech support told me the line set had to be a min. of 10 feet for it to heat correctly.

    That thought had occurred to me. But the instructions clearly had steps for shortening lines so I don't know. It seems to work

    You cut the whole for the lines way to high. Now you have exposed lines running up the outside of the trailer.

    Maybe. But I doubt it. I spent like $120 on a pump and manifold. I don't think someone would have agreed to do it for that. Plus I got to learn something new and that's priceless.

    Now that you have your manifold and vacuum pump, you'll never have to pay to fix your car A/C. It's all so easy once you learn it and have the right tools.
