I find that Cyperus alternifolia nana (the variegated one) is quite drought hardy and makes for a nice groundcover in situations in and around water features where the soil doesn't have to be kept moist permanently.

I haven't seen variegated before, but it sounds cool! I do grow a lot of marginals outside the pond, like canna, and it does great!

Thank you very much. It was helpful. Not sure how much water it needs. Living in SoCal I'm trying to be conscious of the toll on the water supply.

Hi Gail. I'm here in Visalia & I have a compact papyrus& I have it in a pot in my pond, the question is that it's growing outside to pot ( almost like its base of the plant is hanging over). Can I get the parts hanging out & replant them in another pot or how can I split it to make more plants? I just bought the plant this April & it just took off. Please let me know. Thanks

Ok, Spring has sprung North Florida! I've never had a mini papyrus but a 1 gallon pot was only three dollars at lows, now it's time to cut the dead off and start new, is it going to hurt it just to chop it off? Help, tell me what to do with this thing! Do you have an email address?
