Yes it works well to start them off with a mated queen. Once there is comb and brood they won’t abscond. Then you can put a queen cell in

Hi Benny, I’d love to see a video on how to start a mini nuc with a cell. How can you not get bees into the feeder when dropping them in? How many bees do you need? Only 2 of 10 worked for me using skewers. Do I need comb?

G’day. It definitely if you have a piece of comb you can attach to a skewer to begin with or at least a piece of wax foundation. Or dip the skewer in melted wax to give them a guide to build along. I use about 300ml to start off a mini nuc but more is better. It’s winter here now so I won’t be making any videos about starting minis off for a few months. I did give examples of how I do it in some of my other videos. “5 New Queens for the Backyard” I think is one video where I started off some new ones. If you’re starting with no comb and only a queen cell the bees will be likely to abscond. You can keep them closed in with window screen until the queen emerges from the cell. That gives them a reason to stay

I used such nuclei for a few years and gave them up in favor of full nuclei. They have a big problem: the bees leave in swarms in the second half of the season.

@@bennybeekeeper Believe me, it's worth it. I have made my own nuclei from the same material as yours using a regular construction knife and glue. I made them to fit a standard Ruth 230mm frame.
