Mini Cooper Oil Leak Repairs (R56/N14)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

When I bought my 2007 Mini Cooper S, it’s main issue was a massive oil leak. I came to find out that the most likely cause of this leak was the oil feed line going to the turbo.
In this video I show you how to replace the oil feed line with an upgraded unit. I also show how to seal the leaks in the oil cooler housing. These repairs will go a long way to fix or prevent oil leaks on the front of the N14 engine found in the R56 Mini.
If you want to see how to remove the front end of a Mini for easier access to the engine, watch this video: • Mini Cooper S (R56) Fr...

Wonderful. It's been very helpful. I just took my mini to the dealer a few months ago, and charged me over 11 hundreds, and after a few weeks, started doing the same. Now, it has been set correctly, thanks to you.

Having worked on my own R56 myself for as long as I've owned it (5 years) I can tell you that you made the right decision pulling the whole front end off. I swapped out my downpipe without removing anything and it was damn near impossible because you have zero room. Finding all the 10mm bolts holding the head shielding on was the worst.

Dear Eric please take some time to read this,as a former PSA technician i know a few things about this engine that hopefully will save time and money to some people. 1)oil leaks came from the one you fixed but it can happen again(probably) after the same km it has now 2)valve cover and spark plugs round gaskets(this is provided as a set).valve cover gasket set fails and makes the engine dirty all around. 3)oil filter mounts to the block with 3 bolts,if you remove this there is also a set of o-rings that fails. 4)vaccum pump for the brakes is turning and creating vaccum by the camshaft.there is also an 0-ring there,BUT here is stg that i solved myself.the pump leaks oil from inside it.this causes the oil to leak on some cables underneath it and finally go to the ground.factory both mini and psa sell these as a unit, cost is about 200 euros. So if you open it carefully(three 20torx screws)you dont need to replace anything, just put sealant on the o-ring that seals the pump all around and you are done. 5)one time i saw a timing chain tensioner come loose and the oil was leaking on the water hose that goes underneath it.the oil is hot so the water hose got soft and touched the driveshaft which finally blew up and lost all the coolant.make sure the tensioner is tight. thanks for reading, hopefully these will help you

Don't forget the valve cover themselves are as disposable as the gasket set. 9/10 I have to change the valve cover because the CCV is toast as well, new valve cover is needed since the CCV is built into the cover itself.

You seem like you know ur mini's. I have a problem, my 06 mini (non S) 5 speed was running great then I let someone borrow for only 2 days and now it won't go into gear when the car is off or on. I mean I finally got it to go into 5th 4th an reverse. It's pops out of 1st an 2nd but the biggest issue is when I put it in reverse it wants to go forward an the same in neutral. The last time I drove it BC I had to get it home I had to start out in 4th downhill but once it got going it was fine if I left it in 5th an 4th but if I tried to Let off gas it has a grinding sound. Im at a lose but I seen you were a former PSA tech so any suggestions is greatly appreciated. I was thinking the sycro in gears or maybe throw out bearing to clutch or s.cylinder needs bled BC he said he added some and it was the wrong kind of grade but thanks for your time and happy holidays.. please help it's my only car at moment

So happy you posted this video. I just worked on my car and it was the exact same issue with oil AND coolant leaking from that area. Oil comes through the bottom and coolant comes through the top (as far as I can tell). So, if you're seeing oil leaking and smelling coolant, this is your video.

I use copper sealing washers all the time and they work great. The trick is copper "Hardens" at room temp over time. You need to anneal copper by heating with a torch until red hot and allow to air cool. Install within 48 hours or anneal again. Learned that trick in aviation school

Ace work Eric! A friend has entrusted me (can u believe it?) to nurse his MY09 cooper s back to health, so this series is hugely useful. First job was overcooling (heater element failure in thermostat housing), so new Thermostat etc etc then signs of oil in coolant seen, so most likely oil cooler or head gasket. There's that to be investigated next. Thanks, man and season's greetings to you and yours! 🎄💪🏻

Awesome job and video :) I don t own a Mini but love looking at your progress :) I am amazed to see the amount of parts you need to remove for accessing the oil feed line! (and that a feed line can be so poorly designed to break and leak, possibly killing the turbo (turbo running out of oil is bad...). With turbos on the rear of the engine, it is almost trivial compared to this !!! take the exhaust collector and few parts out, and this is done. But yeat, VW Audi cars are becoming money dragging autos to get you to the dealership for replacing anythning ... (a friend had to send his Seat car (VW as well) for an EGR valve replacement, takes 6 hours and you have to get the engine out or alomost... The assembly with the oil filter which leaked coolant is the (in)famous oil heat exchanger, beware cat converter heatshields tend to get loose with time (bit around the mounting bolts break), perforating these exchangers if too close to the heatshield. Fix it well :)

I am currently looking at how to fix this same leak in my oil feed and return line and this is helping me decide if I want to tackle it myself vs paying the dealership to do it.

On mine, the top banjo bolt on the oil feed line had a tiny hole for the oil, but the replacement banjo bolt had a big gaping hole for the oil. I wasn't sure if this mattered, so I just reused the original bolt *shrug*

I get most of my stuff from Detroittuned too. My r56 makes 244WHP. You should autocross it. Great fun with a Mini🚗🔥💨

Great stuff! Quick Q: I am just learning so still taking it to a mechanic. Have. A 2011 Countryman S massive oil leak out of nowhere. They’re stumped but said leak is coming from galley plug? Can’t figure out why. Any thoughts? Thx

Eric we LOVE the return of these more normal repair videos. Fun to watch and helpful to those who might own the vehicle. HOWEVER...the POV cam you’re doing is making me and my pals nauseated. It’s the jerky motion we think. I know this is an easier method of filming for you and we get it. Just passing along info.

Thanks for the feedback. There seems to be 2 camps. One that loves it, the other that doesn't. For me it helps move things along for filming. I still get detail but I don't have to move the camera. It saves me a ton of time.

How do I know if the oil feed line needs to be replaced? Are the ends supposed to be tight? Mine have like 4mm play
