Mini backstage tour of the control area.
Ғылым және технология
It was probably a bad idea to do a mini backstage tour on "loud shirt day". The one day a year we all turn up at work with the loudest shirt we can find. This is just a quick look at some of the stuff in the main control area of the show. The data from here then gets distributed to other parts of the arena and into the castle to control the power and lighting via a load of other racks.

To nerds like me, this is massively more entertaining than what goes on in the front of house in the Festival :D

I was thinking the same, i can't go anywhere without spending more time looking at the lx kit than the show.

I've always had to do my production sound and lighting with whatever I could cobble together (small school, not a very large drama budget). Getting a hold of nice kit is a real treat!
How comes its 'Loud Shirt Day' yet clives the only one in a loud shirt. ?
That entire structure including those offices are all temporary buildings/structures that have been erected for this show, amazing!
4:31 I like that Ashens Poster they have there! :) Also, the tour was amazing! I am so glad you did one!
I'm surprised for 'loud shirt day' you didn't rig up some speakers to your shirt and blast your favorite music. That way when someone tries to ask you a question you can say, "What?! Speak up! It's Loud shirt day!"

Really enjoying this series about the kit and backstage stuff at the festival. Takes me back to my days hiring out sound and lighting gear.
i am turning down the volume, but nothing changes the shirt....help!

Enjoying these work vid's. In weird way its like going to work with dad for the first time and seeing what he really does. Thank you also to those allowing you to film "their special places". What an awesome workplace, beats stringing lights in a coal mine any day.
Thanks for taking the time to do this! The shows I normally work on are normally fairly low budget compared to this so it's super interesting to see!
Fantastic, Clive. The BBC should have had you do a little walkaround of the backstage of the Tattoo presentation. For general geeks who don't have any idea of what it takes to put on a production like this it is fantastic to have a guide with specific knowledge as well as enough curiosity to try to understand the "other people's" jobs. This was genuinely educational.
Wow, thanks for the update and the share of behind the scenes. I used to be the Lead electrician for shows coming into our civic center / Theater. So I had to hook up the show's shore power to our mains, as well as be one of the follow spot operators. Love your videos. See you next time.
Thanks for taking the time to show us behind the scenes. Very cool.
This is my favorite video. I used to own a stage lighting business that was doing great until the crash in 2008. I really wish i could see a full functioning large stage in action. The largest concert i ever did was just over 10,000 people and it broke my heart to sell all my gear.
Wow I saw how much things have changed since 1976 when I was stationed with The Old Guard Communications Section. We were charged, in addition to our tactical Infantry duties to the Theatrical Lighting and Sound Stage equipment. We had a large selection of lighting equipment that took up nearly an entire basement under one of the barracks on Fort Meyer Va, and when we went out on jobs, we had two large van type trucks to haul the equipment. It was very interesting work, and since 1976 was our bi-centennial year, we had plenty of shows to put on, including Torchlight Tattoo, and The Spirit of America, with lots of explosion simulators and all sorts of lighting challenges.
Gorgeous sound desk and a fantastic looking setup. I do a lot of entertainment work and it still blows my mind as to whats possible
Well done for getting permission from the all the bosses for filming this I appreciate it can't be easy.
Clive, that tour was cool. Thanks so much for showing us around.
big Clive is the reason I have started doing lighting and I am so happy doing it
Thank you sooo much for this amazing video!!! I love seeing behind the scenes, this was like pure heaven! Keep up the great work!!
Thanks for the tour Clive!
Wow, the setup backstage is a lot more sophisticated that I imagined it would be. Don't get me wrong, I did think it would be quite sophisticated but it's just so more than I ever imagined.

AlpakaWhacker ...damn I was surprised too! Figured everything was done in your basement or garage. What is the place really used for ... Concerts? I figure you can make a satellite and launch it from the arena, then use gps & film the return trip & landing right from/ thru them windows. You can do it!
As a kid I always wanted to have a look round the control centers like that. Thanks!
Heh, heh... Good old beatup Clearcom. Good to see some things never change between a small little auditorium and a large venue like this! Thanks for the video Clive, Show Lighting is exactly what I intend to go into, I really appreciate the tech's view you've given us.
Love seeing your work videos and getting a look at what you do when you're not using the vice of knowledge on an light bulb.

brilliant back stage run down. nice one Clive. ..appreciated ☺
It always makes me happy to see Hog control. I am Hog 3/4 programmer in the US and from what I have noticed is that Hog seems to have a noticeably larger "martic share" in the UK and europe while GrandMA has a larger user base in the US. Wish I got to use Hogs more often, but it seems the trend in the US is more and more people are moving there systems to GrandMA. Great rig! That place looks like a fun worksite!
Everything I wanted to do and achieve when I left school and never did. Keep up the great work it's really interesting stuff.
As an Edinburgh lad this is a real treat to see behind the scenes of such a local institution! I was a sea cadet the last time I saw the Tattoo live so that's over twenty years now.
That was pretty cool, nice random picture of Ashens at around 4:32
GREAT show tonight!!!! Thanks for your part Clive!.... didn't notice any lights out!

Glad you enjoyed the show. A full check on all lights is carried out every evening before the audience comes in.
Very interesting - Thanks for taking the time to show us around! :)
Really interesting tour Clive, thanks. Maybe you should do a 'behind the scenes' documentary with the BBC :)
YOOO NICE ASHENS POSTER, I'm glad you guys did a vid together. You're both my favorite tech channels for obvious reasons
once again again again, cheers for sharing Clive. very impressive and I formative
I love the nod to ashes on the wall
That's a spectacular shirt! I love loud shirts.
Oh this takes me back. Good times working in stage and theater production.

Never mind the Beeb, I think you and your team could make one of the most awesome semi technical documentaries of the type that they don't show on dumbed down TV any more. Thanks for posting this, I wish you could have made this video about 45 mins long explaining a bit more about how the technology works, is used, connected together and the advantages of modern digital systems.
Love that pic of Ashens in the technic room!
Love the BC/DC bigclive.com poster behind your 'little studio'. I particularly like the way your lighting and camera rig is clipped on to a big tank of water to stabilise it. These backstage videos at the tattoo are excellent, really informative, impressive array of kit that gets used. The panoramic shots of Edinburgh make me miss Scotland a lot though. I'll be back some day.

Thanks for the tour. We are up there on Saturday 27th, a gift from our daughter. So we will get to experience the Tattoo live after watching it on TV for many, many years. Really looking forward to it, thanks for the video.
thanks for the tour! always wondered what these places look like
What an awesome office you have at the moment clive.
Looking good Clive!
Thanks Clive. I love 'industrial' electronics
Love Edinburgh and thank you for this video showing its true beauty.
Superb, great to get a look behind the scenes!
Awesome BigClive. Thanks
fascinating stuff Clive, your rocking that shirt.
fantastic engineering!! And happy to see that Ashens is on the job aswell :)
@3:53 "I'm not an expert in audio desks" This cracked me up... having been a touring lighting director for years I spent thousands of hours next to audio desks and their operators and they're still a complete mystery to me as well... as I'm sure my kit was to them.
That gothic cathedral in the background looked amazing.
Awesome! :) Reminded me of the days I spent with Rage Noise Audio in Nelson, New Zealand. In particular, the World of Wearable Arts shows we did the sound system for. But the kit we used was no way near as flash as this stuff!
wow that's some serious gear, man could have a field day... no wait... a field month or more with that lot. thanks for the tour, love ur vids
Saw the Tattoo last night (22/8). Many thanks to yourself and the rest of the crew, a flawless show. (also thanks for the video, it reminded me to pack my ticket! :-) )
Cool job you have. I been worked with sound to big shows. i miss that times. :)
Great little vid - always interesting stuff
Thanks Clive, really interesting!
Great tour, thank you!
Nice tour Clive, love the shirt lol
Love the Ashens logo snuck onto the wall!
Fantastic video!
Wow, nice to see that. I was actually attending the show about a week and a half ago and was wondering what it would need like technically.
Awesome and interesting job you have.
What a massive support structure to run it all wow.
Seems like a pretty cool setup really, not much wrong with that! Love the idea if keeping spares on top!
Thanks for showing us round. Bah humbug to PRG.

+bigclivedotcom so they require you to have an nda, and are they exclusively designed for yourselves? If not then a wannabe competitor will just buy one to reverse engineer despite the fairly high price tag. If their product is decent and they are strong in other areas such as CX, people seeing inside won't be an issue at all and may even benefit them if it shows their product quality in a good light. No pun intended!

It is surprisingly hard to buy PRG equipment. Google "PRG lighting retailer", nothing comes up, their website doesn't have an obvious list of dealers, much less do they publish rough pricing.
I would literally do what ever it took to have the job of narrating. that sounds like a blast.
Thanks for sharing you days at work.👍

You need to make that BC/DC as a shirt! Awesome video, like always!
Loving that shirt!
love your videos and you inspired me so much i decided to going to school for electronic.
ive been waiting for this for sooo long :D
That shirt looks pretty cool.
That does look like a rather interesting place. Gotta say, I like the shirt, too. Might see if I can find one or two like it in my area next time I go clothes shopping.
Great tour - I really hope that the punters appreciate what goes on behind the scenes to make the whole show work, but sadly I doubt it. It's incredible the amount of tech that is involved. The next time someone starts complaining about the price of concert tickets, I'm going to show them this ;-)
Good lord the frames on this video is glorious!
Love it. Move videos like this! Would love to have taken that route in work.
Love the shirt!!!
I'm super jealous of the awesome opportunity!!! I need a job like this
Great tour, looks like you have the best views in all of Edinburgh.
Thanks for the tour. The Tattoo is a bucket list item for me. I've been working backstage off and on for about 50 years but I've never been involved in a big outdoor production like that. None of the equipment I work with needs to be IP67.
i love this type of video and technical equipment :o
Cool, thanks for the tour
Cool Clive thanks!
love the shirt clive
Very in, i love behind the scenes stuff like this
Amazing to see behind the scenes :)
1) wow what a treat, never saw this one before 2) tell me you won the Loud Shirt Competition, Clive
Nice to see the place like that.
very cool tour
