I use exactly all you have there and also crush up different types of mineral blocks and pick pots into my recipe also saline salt which has a little charcoal in it. I also find adding organic seaweed powder to their mix might be beneficial. Thank you Frank !

Sounds like you are doing a super job. You can feed them all separately or crush and mix together. They do waste more if you mix everything together. Seaweed powder is a great additive.

That’s fine thank you so much I just wanted to know because they do love the red grids and it smells pretty good believe it or not but I also bought the all in one by versa lager and it also smells good so I just mix both of them together, and I give it to them basically three times a week in a long tray. I have Birds divided in two different coops. I am not letting them out the weathers been bad out here, but they’re more in then out and they are breathing as well so I just did not want to overdo fill them or stuff them or get them sick by giving them so much I’m only having a problem with the verse Alaga plus jerry because they’re not eating the corn. I have to strain the food all the time but it’s not a big deal. I tried all of her Salada and it all boils down to this one. This is the only one they kind of like I tried the energy one thinking that being that it doesn’t have any corn it will work they just spit it out, anyway that was really important. Revisiting this, as well as your first video on minerals (10 years old). You know, in Rollers, we don't tend to feed extra minerals beyond basic grit and where kit birds are concerned, many of us don't feed grit at all because it tends to induce more thirst and water intake influences the roll. As well, we don't want the kit birds packing around a crop full of grit because they tend to regurgitate up any crop contents after landing and it's always been theorized that rolling with anything on the crop can result in choking. That's the theory at least. In 40+ years around Rollers, I only came across one person who gave minerals besides grit and that was the late Monty Neibel, who before his very untimely death on a car wreck 20 odd years ago, was considered the most successful Roller flier who ever lived. Interestingly enough, he used the pink mineral. But as a general rule, he was the only notable Roller breeder i ever heard of who used anything beyond grit. Well, guess what? I've followed your guidance on this subject with the Racers and what a HUGE DIFFERENCE in squab health there has been when you compare the two breeds. I tend to think I'll always refrain from giving my roller kits a bunch of grit, etc. for the reasons I mentioned (or maybe i shouldn't!), but from here out, the breeders will definitely get what the Racers are getting because the difference is definitely incredible. So two questions. On the pink mineral, I have seen it suggested to feed it either free choice in a crock or to dry mix it into feed. That being said, since it's really just a fine powder, do think a better uptake result would be had mixing it into feed with a light oil carrier to help it stick to the grain or do you think it's adequate offered simply in the dry powder form. ( Speaking of oils, do you use them at all in your program?). Secondly, Foy's offers a mineral product called MP 74 that contains a very broad range of trace elements. I am curious if you've ever used it? It seems like the most complete trace mineral product on the market, but I was surprised by the small quantity for the price. I guess I expected it to be more of a powdered product like the pink mineral than what is in reality a product that more closely resembles grit. It smells substantially of anise, so I can see them gorging themselves on it if it's offered free choice and at 14 bucks per 20 ounces, I can see even a small loft eating 1000 bucks worth of the stuff a year if you didn't mix it into a grit.

Hello Kerby, For starters I feel the Natural Vita Mineral is the best mineral if you are going to give only one mineral other than the grit mix. I would give it free choice in the pot and not force them to eat it by putting on the grain. Do not bother with any product loaded with anise because they only want to sell the product by making the pigeons eat plenty. $14 for 20 ounces is nuts. I would feed the rollers pink minerals and a good grit mix at minimum. They will be just fine and the not having grit in the crop is most likely an old wives tale past down for years. The babies are so much nicer and the breeders do not break down when you feed plenty of minerals. Keep up the good work.

@McLaughlin Lofts Thanks for the extra insights. You're right, the grit subject with flying rollers could be an old wife's tale, which the old time breeders certainly had plenty of. Case in point, I remember the late Ollie Harris of Birmingham telling me one about an old competition flier who, when Ollie was a kid (we're going back to 1910 or so here) used to actually pee in a bucket of crushed brick and the old timer would give that to his kit birds. And some of them would piss on bread crumbs and feed that to their kit birds on the day before a competition. They figured it made the kits more active on competition day!

Hi Vahik, The minerals are so very important. Most of the supply houses sell minerals. I have most of my minerals delivered with my feed. I also order from Siegel, Vita King, Jedds and Global.

The grits and minerals are in front of the pigeons at all times. For the race team I give fresh grits and minerals the day of return and Tuesday or Wednesday. Not too close to shipping because the salts will dehydrate the birds. The breeders are given fresh grits and minerals three times a week but they have it at all times.

Frank, what about sea salt and magnesium carbonate blocks? I know that Heitzman was a big proponent of the magnesium carbonate blocks broken up and mixed into the grit. Here on the Cal-Ore border, it's difficult to get grit/mineral other than the Winner's Cup brand red grit and garlic grit.

I do keep the magnesium blocks in front of the pigeons. I leave the blocks whole and the birds peck at them. Cup of sea salt or even better sale water aquarium salt. Sad about your grit but if that is all you can get it is okay. Can you get to the open ocean and collect small stones and shells? Some beaches have the most beautiful grit.

@McLaughlin Lofts Thanks for that. I don't get to the coast very often, but working in the gold mining industry I have a pretty much endless supply of fine river gravels. Most of it is very rich in native magnetite, chromite sands, calcium carbonate based rocks, etc. To some degree, there is a certain amount of small shells from fresh water snails, mussels, etc. I can pretty much classify it down to any size, anything from 1/8th minus down to about 1/200th minus which is pretty much silt.

Wow, You may want to collect this and go into the grit business. You can bake in the over to kill anything that might be on the pebbles and shells. If these are cool mountain rivers and healthy there will be no need to bake the grit.

@McLaughlin Lofts Interestingly enough, I probably could do that and the thought never crossed my mind before you mentioned it. We've also got some pretty big, heavily mineralized red clay deposits locally which could be the basis of some pretty good redstone. Lots of limestones as well, which back in the 20s were used to produce grit for local turkey farms when they were still produced commercially here.

I use a regular wooden feeder with the cups inside the feeder with loose Grit and Redstone in the feeder. See this in my Celibate hen loft tour.

I leave the grit in front of the pigeons at all times but never add fresh grit or minerals after Wednesday during the race season. I worry the race team will dehydrate if they eat grit and minerals close to shipping. There is much sald in all the mixes. Great question.

I buy mostly from Global because everything is delivered to me including all my grain. If I had to ship the minerals it would be costly.

Hi Steven, I buy from Global Pigeon Supply because they deliver all my feed, grits and vaccines. All the companies are good. VitaKing sells Jovati and most companies have an all in one type of grit mix. You can just feed all the other grits separately and skip the all in one mixes.

I am sorry you asked for VitaMineral. This is a Natural Product. I think Siegel and Son sells Vitamineral. The Natural brand is the best.

All I have found is steamed rolled barley. Is that equal to regular barley?

Livestock mineral is nearly 100% salt. Vitamineral is a much better product.
