Minecraft Old-School VS New-School Let's Plays

Ойындар

I went undercover on KZread to see how the old-school Minecraft Let's Plays rank against the modern Let's Plays
To do this, I recorded a new let's play and made two videos out of it. One was the old-school Minecraft style and one was the effect-heavy modern let's play style. I uploaded both videos at the same time on two brand-new channels to see if one would outperform the other. Here's what happened...

    I do have to admit, The old pixelmon vids that Etho used to upload were slow and steady as he was learning the mechanics and style of modded minecraft but after a few episodes you understood where he was going with it. It made you feel like you were apart of the journey along with him. Some of the OG content creators like Etho had a way of making their videos engaging and for the audience and I personally enjoy watching the old style of content creation.

    Yeah, from my pov as a viewer, "old school" videos are very much based on personality and community, so it be harder to gain traction, vs "new school" videos which are very much based on editing and fast paced storytelling that is easy to consume and has wider appeal. Both good in their own right

    This was a fascinating video. A data point you might find interesting is well. my video... It feels weird since you could say I'm promoting my stuff, but I think it's pertinent. I posted an old-school style video to my second channel. 25 min of relaxed cutting. I expected it to flop by a mile. Don't get me wrong I thought it was good, but hadn't made something like it before. The video over performed everything; now sitting at 490k views in 2 weeks. It should be noted this is an outlier case though. I probably have a much more established personality on youtube than most, but it's proof people will watch oldschool style videos. Even one's posted this year.

    Can we get a ban on this guy 😂 kidding, but that's so sick! I think you're spot on that to pull off an old school episode, a lot more is riding on your personality and vibe compared to the new school stuff. The heavy editing process lets you construct the vibe, maybe that's why people think the new school stuff is successful more often. I think that's the point I was trying to get at by saying you need to identify your story, and figure out how to best tell it. If you want to increase your chances of success with old school episodes, you have to figure out how to tell the story as it's happening. It's cool to see ya here though dude! I'm curious to know how much impact the title / thumbnail made vs the editing styles. What would happen if you released each video with those elements switched? I'm guessing editing would still reign supreme, but would be interesting to see the impact since there is so much emphasis placed on the importance of title/thumbnail for videos.

    I think old school MC is really is harder to start. They’re still popular but most of us who watch it have our people that we watch. You have Etho in the thumbnail and I’d watch him regardless of what he posts. He can keep doing what he does because he has a massive borderline cult like audience bc he’s just so endearing and has been around since the beginning. Trying to build that now I think would be almost impossible but that’s just speculation…

    @@SwitchBackMongo I've been doing this youtube thing for going on 10 years so am always interested in the underlying data behind the success of videos. I'm sure others here feel the same. I'm honestly not surprised that suggested was the traffic source. Suggested is where you want to be. I wouldn't be worried about search tho. Search traffic requires that users actively seek out your content. If the content in question doesn't rank high, chances are it will get little views. These days search based traffic isn't the best for growth unless you are doing tutorials. Hence why a lot of folks don't even bother putting time into tagging/seo. Was a fun experiment to see!

    I love this experiment!! It is encouraging to see that there is still a place for the old school stuff since basically most of the channels I watch do the chill let's play content but in their own unique way and I hope they will succeed. I also think to make let's plays, people could combine aspects of both styles. Like play the way they want, build a cute house, not dig some giant hole and burn out lol but plan out a script and include some edits like subtitles once in a while. That's basically what I'm experimenting with atm haha And now I'm gonna track down those let's play videos you made on the new channels 😂😂

    (Just my personal take on this) I think there's still audiences for both types of content. Examples could be found in hermitcraft where it's not the exact same as old style content but it's a lot less energetic. Meanwhile if you look on your videos for dominion (obviously a much smaller server) it still shows that the audience is there for new form content as well. If I had to guess as to why, I think it would have to do with the last video I watched by xisuma blade. (On his second channel, I believe.) It's comparing Hermitcraft to DreamSMP and the massive difference in audience. He simply says it's the difference in demographic. I think that's the same case for old vs new style minecraft content.

    While I think there are a lot of advantages to the high production modern minecraft let's play style, one thing I do miss is the sense of intimacy and isolation the older lets plays had. These days there are a lot of twitch streamers, live chats, advertisements, plugs, youtube statistics, and other emersion breakers. It used to feel like I was watching pocket dimensions isolated from the real world where my favorite creators could play at their own pace, primarily for themselves and for fun.

  • @ashheilborn
    @ashheilborn Жыл бұрын

    Hermitcraft videos have seemingly minimal editing. Like, they *do* edit down to get a through line story, but most of their channels are just progress update style editing with a creative commons soundtrack behind it. (Or one the creator's made a deal with, those are pretty great!) While there is a lot of subtle editing, I don't think most of that is necessary to making a decent episode. The most important thing is just to have a good microphone, and to try. Cutting out the bits where you're not talking is good, but that also means if you want to show a clip, it's important to be talking through it, even if what you're saying is largely unrelated. I think a LOT of the other editing is literally just playing around with finding new settings and seeing how they work.

  • @RofoRex
    @RofoRex Жыл бұрын

    I love the idea of this comparison, I do believe there is scope for the older style to succeed but there needs to be some refreshing of the way the content is structured. You can have a great storyline without the need for high production value. Will it be as successful, I don’t believe so but do I think you can grow steadily as a creator still.

    Honestly my favorite content has been piropito's first time playing minecraft series. The videos are very short and he does a lot of time lapse stuff and edits in general. But his videos are extremely chill and he's not very loud. They also started off extremely aimless and even when he has goals formed it feels a lot freer than some of the heavily produced stuff I see on youtube. His videos are just very charming because it's cool seeing someone entirely new to the game tackle it without outside help. Like when I saw that he learned how to make redstone clocks with minecarts when he still doesn't know how the dust works I lost my mind. So it's this mix of a nice concept, a personality I like and short videos that I can easily watch that are generally laidback and chill affairs.

    cool experiment! i think it mostly comes down simply to the fact that the majority of the audience for minecraft lets plays are kinds with 0 attention span, so naturally the more flashy one wins. the more mature audience preferring the chill lets plays are definately there as well and probably make up most of your audience (hence the results in your poll), but overall i would estimate them making for maybe 20% of minecraft LP audience compared to the 80% kids (which is probably a very optimistic estimate and the ratio might even be much more extreme in reality).

    This was so interesting!! Some of us (me lmao) enjoy making/watching videos in a style that does evoke watching someone just play the game, pretty old school...but slightly modernised with faster pacing and more narrative than true older vids used to have. Definitely easier to stand out initially with great editing skills that not everyone has, though!

    Great video! Could you talk about how you learnt to edit beyond simple cuts? Do you visualize what you want to show on screen? And as for which content I like, it really depends on the length and storytelling. My mood determines if I'm up for a long video (regardless of style), and my I'm always looking for something creative in the story and presentation style. In fact, I dislike straightforward premise-conclusion/problem-solution style videos. Having an atypical structure, having twists, showing authenticity and personality is what makes youtube really difficult to do. Not to mention having to be up the creativity every once in a while could be draining. It doesn't help that in long form content, you wouldn't go out of your way to do something unique or chaotic, whereas you would in new-style videos. In fact, back in the days of the dreamsmp, I would watch the non-scripted streams, which were essentially old style videos.

    I feel like it age demographics may also play a decent role in this too, many (not all) younger people especially kids tend to like faster paced. Where as an older audience usually (not always of course) tends to not appreciate more scripted style videos as it can come as either too fast-paced, or "fake" in a way. There's also the nostalgia factor for older audiences too. And while both are needed the ones that appeal more to younger folks will probably see more overall views/subs bc let's be honest, there's a lot of kids on the platform.

    This is a really interesting video, I hope you continue to explore this topic a bit more. I think you focused a bit too much on the views side of the results. Seeing how long a person watches, comparing the comments that the two videos got, and other analytics are important to recognizing how well a video is doing. The two videos you made are both really good, although I think that the old style is a bit longer than what I remember videos from back then being. I mostly watched OG Minecrafters, Hermitcraft and other miscellaneous creators. There's a place for slower videos, but you hit the nail on the head saying that story is most important. I think that people also want more originality as well, either from the production or the content idea. But it's not like these are things that weren't played with back in the day, it's just the idea that new videos hyper focus on retention editing. Also, I'd argue Dream's videos are pretty relaxed in terms of how their edited. Most of his videos rely on tension and story rather that quick, attention grabbing visuals. This is just something I think about when the topic of new vs old comes up. Thought I'd tack it onto the end of this thought piece.

    For me personally: I go with a slow-paced kind of let’s play for Minecraft (especially for Beta 1.7.3 and Better Than Adventure) Too much editing can be distracting, while little to no editing can be boring for some. I believe it’s purely based on preference of every viewer. What matters the most is that you’re able to have fun while not only recording, but having fun as you’re playing the game while recording.

I find this video really interesting as I run a Minecraft series on my channel. which VERY VERY much so runs with this old school style. which is funny because I know how to edit; I even use premiere pro but I do the old school videos out of a love for a long past era. I have never really jived with the newer high energy style, as a lot of the time I found myself playing Minecraft whilst watching these lets play videos. and I've found that If I'm doing something Interesting in the video they tend to preform better. so I make a small crap house, ok that isn't a very interesting video, but if I make a new gold farm that will out perform the video in which I don't do something interesting. I am interested to see if you find a trick to the older videos that will make them more on par with an audience and once again great video!

    Next Experiment: One channel that makes both styles of videos for let’s play content. One is a long form classic playlist and the other is condensed. Will new viewers, brought to the channel from one style, watch both? Capture both audiences. Also, an experiment that revolves around a new channel making shorts vs one that doesn’t would be interesting. Especially if the channel contents are similar. Nice work!

    I’ve been trying to get into content creation for about a year now and have still yet to release a video despite having so many plans, and all of it is because every time I open up an editing software, I just get incredibly stressed and don’t know where to go. Seeing that not everything needs to be over the top is extremely encouraging

    What would’ve been cool to see alongside the views is the viewer retention. The average concentration span has dropped significantly and the new editing style holds those viewers in for longer further promoting the video which probably is the reason of the second getting more views because youtube pushes out content that holds people on the app. great video nonetheless

    I found this video shortly after launching my own channel. I was interested to see how the old style/new style comparison would play out especially as I am building "old style" videos. What struck me about your video is that you posted anonymously, yet still managed to garner 67 views in 5 days. What magic sauce did you use?! My first videos that are now months old are still sitting at below 30 views. I feel there is something you did subconsciously as an experienced creator that I am missing. Thoughts? Tips to share for new creators?

    This is so timely for me. I’ve joked for years about making ‘Momcraft’ but it never seems to be perfect or good enough or just…enough. So screw it, it doesn’t matter, maybe 63 weirdos will also want to watch an old mom play Minecraft. If not, at least I tried. I’m going to do the thing. Here’s my takeaway from this - You know what is guaranteed to fail on KZread? The video that never got made. Even the basic video got views. I love the messaging and encouragement!

    I think the problem with the new style of videos is that you don't really form a connection with the people making them. It feels less like a journey, because of the clear story. You don't get to see and feel what people go through, you just see the end result, and little bits along the way. An old school, low-editing video brings you on the journey WITH the player. This isn't to say the new style can't get you interested in the people who make them. But a lot of times they all blend together for me, and I end up not remembering, or straight up forget about who made what, or that they even exist. The problem with the old school style, is that you have to like the person going on the adventure. If you don't already know them, these videos are gonna be what draws you into their content. Without a draw into their content, they will likely be ignored.

    I think I'm biased based on what I started with. I began playing Minecraft during Alpha. In those days, they were all videos on exploring what this new in-development game called Minecraft had to offer. So paulsaursjr, davidr64yt, Kwantonium, etc. Where each episode was shorter(due to 10, and later 15, minute length restrictions) but had very simple goals in mind. Find a cave with iron, set up a small farm, find gravel, find your way back home, expand the fort, explore this new feature called redstone. As videos got longer, the content didn't change. This followed through beta and out to release. Then Minecraft exploded in further popularity and the new-style format videos became popular. Much more appealing to the wider masses. People want progress today, not 5 episodes from now. The video creation through all of KZread and other platforms has changed a lot. I like the longer format, slow pace videos.

    When I was younger I used to love the OG Let's Play type videos on Minecraft, especially from Etho, Dallasmed65 and a few others (like the Hermitcrafters). Although since then, obviously, editing has changed for these types of videos. I was getting into the over-edited content until this last year where I feel like it's now getting too much for me and I rarely watch Minecraft content because of this. I tend to just enjoy the relaxed and slow-paced videos.

  • @TheMysticCrafter

    I'm creating videos that are probably classified as "old school" but I feel this pressure to switch to more "new school" style since they seem to perform so much better. But after watching this video I think that maybe there is still hope for more relaxing let's plays. I kind of want to be somwhere in-between, but that's just me :) Another aspect to video creation as a really tiny channel is how to approach shorts. Sometimes they randomly outperform anything you do on your channel and other times just get no views and the benefit to the channel seems to be inconsistent. Maybe it's something else you can investigate. Also, next time you could compare other metrics such as impressions, click through rate and retention. Cause I'll better have 100 views with high retention than 1000 with really terrible one

    >"I don't think people don't click on the video because of name or avatar" >Proceeds to use AI avatar for the channels XD Jokes aside, thanks for very important vid on this topic. I wouldn't say it was sole reason why I stopped doing Let's Plays (because it was more personal), but lack of editing skills was huge factor why I felt quite meh with the results. However, just like you, I also made the same mistake of making loose story. After all, it's hard to make distinct barrier between old school and new school. Thumbnail-wise, the only old school Let's Plays from two guys I know are made by Etho - and even he makes edits, just like eastern movies, there's a difference on how long parts are used before each cut (eastern movies had longer parts, while Hollywood had shorter). Mumbo would be quite modern in this case, which is the case why I watch him relatively late when there's any even on HC / Life series - it's because he will cut out a lot of interesting stuff, even more than Grian. The reason why I understand him being old school is the difference of adrenaline - Mumbo still keeps this old school vibe of peaceful Let's Plays, but peaceful doesn't mean fast, in this case. If we understand "old school" as such, there's a lot of hope for this genre - HermitCraft is amazing example that people still love this vibe, just needs modern approach to some aspects of the video. But personally, I think Etho nails it the most. It's my favourite KZreadr, but also there's the thing that he is one of the most old school Let's Playing guys - but he makes those interesting. And that's a huge difference, which I think a lot of old school let's players didn't achieve, counting me. A lot of that could be story and coherent idea, as you just said, because this is what shines there. And also, probably, personality, because there's no voice, no laugh or cry of despair more unique than Etho. Being person talkative on interesting topics also may help.

    I've been involved in KZread creation since 2013 and been watching Minecraft let's play videos since 2010... Here's my take on the ever evolving KZread Algorithm: YTA can scan text and images to reveal data about that video. The easier it is for the YTA to get a "feel" for your video the easier it is for it to recommend your video to the people who typically watch videos that "feel" the same. Thumbnails make things clickable, that's data each time it is clicked, titles have words that connect to other clicked titles, and descriptions are filled with lots of data to process and connect with other data. So the more of those things done, the better viewing results ... However, once all that has been done, even properly, the bottom line is the channel itself and the content. So what you say in the end is the biggest point here. If the content you create is good, people will eventually see it. Tell a better story! The old school let's plays were ideal because we (the viewers) were hungry for it because there wasn't anything else like that to watch at the time. TV was sitcoms and dramas. Let's plays were unique. It was like watching a friend play a game you also played. You might learn something, you might laugh, you might watch them fall to their death as you have done a hundred times yourself. Now, that's been done a thousand times or more and it's not unique or new. The gigantic builds in 2 weeks or 2 months to make a 20 minute video is becoming standard/normal. Eventually this too will fade. So, stick with a good story telling theme and the rest will sort itself out. The good story tellers are still going and their stories are still being heard. A good case in point is THIS video. I have never watched one of your videos but this one was recommended to me because the YTA said, hey! we think you will like this one. They weren't wrong...this time.

    Im actually interested to see the analytics of those videos, especially the average viewing ages of those videos are. See if that leans into the "more cut edits appeal to much younger viewers with shorter attention spans" or if it really is the better story telling method right now.
