Show Notes
Who Am I? (Opening) - David Godman and Raghu discuss the great saint Ramana Maharshi and his heart-based Advaita Vedanta teachings. Raghu shares Ramana Maharshi’s importance to the Neem Karoli Baba satsang.
Hear Ram Dass’s experience practicing Ramana Maharshi’s Vichari ottma meditation practice on this episode of the Here and Now podcast.
Something Behind the Ego (6:30) - We hear about David’s first encounter with the teachings of Ramana Maharshi which quieted his mind and led him across the world in pursuit of deeper knowledge and truth.
“Somehow there was a power in the words, coming as they did from Ramana himself, that touched me in a place that silenced my mind. Although I wasn’t framing anything he said against any particular questions or doubts that I had, it somehow stopped my questioning mind. It showed me in a way what it was like to be truly quiet, to have no thoughts, to be peaceful.” - David Godman
Mischief of the Individual “I” (19:10) - David shares some of the core teachings of Ramana Maharshi and points out some of the effective ways we can put them into practice.
“Ramana Maharshi said the trick to getting rid of the ‘I’ is to stop it reaching out to connect and identify with anything other than itself. So this process of self-inquiry for which he is quite famous is simply being aware of what it is inside yourself that thinks your thoughts when you say, ‘I believe this or I am angry.’ There is an ‘I’ inside yourself that has taken possession of this thought or process and said, ‘I am doing this.’ He said to take attention off the object that your mind is experiencing and instead simply be aware of what it is inside yourself that thinks the thoughts.” - David Godman
For more on the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta, check out this episode of the Mindrolling podcast with Mooji.
In the Presence of Saints (36:45) - After spending much of his life in India, David has had the privilege of spending time with saints and great spiritual practitioners. He tells the story of Mathru Sri Sarada, a devotee of one of the last living disciples of Ramana Maharshi.
Find out more about Mathru Sri Sarada at mathrusrisarada.org.
Lakshmi the Cow (51:10) - David tells the tale of Lakshmi the cow, a true devotee of Ramana Maharshi.
“Lakshmi developed into a truly outstanding devotee. Everybody knew that she was not to be treated as an animal, she was treated as a devotee her whole life.” - David Godman

David Godman is an enlightened Jnani himself and Maharshi Ramana is within him. I must have heard the story of Keerai-Patti almost 50 times, whom David fondly translated as Green-granny. Laxmi-the cow and many other such narrations which I felt are directly coming from Ramana's blessing through David to many of us who are again lucky to have come under the aegis of Ramana's grace.

Michael James is another Ramana expert you will enjoy. Michael has a slightly different take than David Godman. Where David Godman believes the individual is a jnani, Michael James says that no person can become a jnani because there are no people!

Hi Moesy. Sorry to contradict you, but David doesn't think the individual is a Jnani. He frequently says the individuality disappears when realization occurs. He has a perfect understanding of Bhagavans teachings, as does Michael James.

They said the same thing in two different ways. There is no contradiction here. David Godman said it from the individual standpoint, as a concession to those who believe they are Individuals. Whereas Michael james gives no such concession and speaks from the standpoint of the absolute reality. Both addressing the level of understanding of the questioner.

How about us stop talking this person says this and that and focus on ourselves instead. What's the point of discussing other's opinions and never practice or experience yourselves and extinguish the questions. What's the point of saying James said there's no people and this and that , how does that help you or anyone but simply increasing a metaphysical intellectual curiosity.
