The flexible grids shown at 2:17 would retain soil better if interplanted with a diverse variety of plants. It is a healthy, diverse plant biome that causes roots to release glues which both hold the soil together and in place, and allow better drainage. Avoiding synthetic chemical additives is important as any will kill soil biome diversity. Would be great if this showed ways to incorporate bioswales into paved landscapes. Bioswales are depressed areas that gather rain runoff from roadways, other paved areas. They use mulch and biology (plants, typically including site-appropriate trees to reduce water from going into storm drains; reduce downstream flooding; reduce ground subsidence and concrete cracking; reduce irrigation costs for landscaping around businesses; city buildings, residetial areas; replace ugly, raised paved pork chops used for traffic control; reduce water runoff, lessen heat island effects; heat islands, control street litter; reduce air and water pollution; reduce crime by adding walkability and bikeability; reduce human waste from reaching waterways (often stormdrains and sewer lines share the same piping, this overwhelms treatment plants, so the excess is sent elsewhere 'into the wild'); increase quality water supply using natural processes to clean the water before it flows into watertables and aquifers; reduce the need to expand existing starmdrain systems; reduce pumping costs because free water has been localized instead of centralizef where it is metered and must be pumped (at great cost because water is heavy and uses a lot of electricity to pump it, as well as the costs from building and maintenance of related piping, other structures); reducing brownouts; regreening;adding beauty;adding comfort; etc. Bioswales are much better than the ugly pits used called detention/retention ponds.

The sheepswool insulation was tried in an upmarket housing scheme in Britain years ago & despite being treated with borax to kill insects, the drywall had to be stripped off and the sheepswool replaced with normal insulation... I remember reading about this maybe 10 years ago.... 🙄😂

3:50 The biggest problem with this drainage system is the use of corrugated pipe... Smooth wall pipe is significantly better for drains than the ridged corrugations that trap and hold water and restrict the ability of the system to flush debris out of the pipes...they also reduce the water's flow rate through the pipes, smooth pipe can carry far more water per minute than corrugated pipe can...

HOW can solar panels be installed ON TOP of a GREEN roof??? Doesn’t it need sunlight? Water? The heat from the panels will kill it too

  • @jimdob6528

Idk. Moss is super hardy and tend to grow in little to no sunlight areas. The caves around me have moss that grows inside them. The heat all I can say is my solar panels don’t get very hot because the mount we use allows air flow underneath it and I haven’t really seen any roof mounted ones that lack airflow but I’m not an expert. I just don’t see it as much of an issue.

Could use bifacial solar panels that sit clear of the plantings, and angled for best capture. Bifacial panels allow light through. If you have a flat roof -the bifacial panels could be part of a gazebo roof so you could have a covered area with a view. The water from the panels could be harvested/reused and used to maintain the plantings instead of funneling it directly off the roof.
