I actually think he made his decisions based on characters. He prefered Mimi to Uma who is way more immature and confrontational. When Mimi decided to stay true to herself stealing him back rather than recoupling with Omar. If Ayo wanted Uma he could have, she simply asked him to chose her over Mimi and he never did.
