Mimi o Sumashite - Fujiwara Hazuki [KAN/ROM/EN Lyrics]

Музыка

Happy Birthday Hazuki! 🧡
This illustration is a bit cheerful for such a bittersweet song about Hazuki's struggles with her mother, buuuut I'm planning on using these sticker illustrations for the rest of the Sharp character songs too, so... didn't want it to be the odd one out haha. Oh well...!
I chose this song for her birthday because apparently the fan translation that already exists greatly mistranslated the most critical lines of these lyrics. So I figured I should set the record straight lol.

I'm Umeko, a longtime Ojamajo Doremi fan! I'm an American expat currently living in Japan, where I teach English.
Owaranai Monogatari was originally a lyrics website I created for the 10th anniversary of the final episode of Ojamajo Doremi, but at the time I became too busy to keep up with website updates and ultimately I misplaced everything except the text translations! So now I'm using those text translations to create lyrics videos (color-coded where applicable).
I'm experienced with fan translations but not so much with video editing, so please don't judge me too harshly on that front haha.

If there are any songs that you're really looking forward to seeing, make sure to fill out my survey for upcoming songs! 🌸forms.gle/hsY4e6yyy3cabKG68 I'll still be mostly prioritizing songs I want to work on, but if there's ever a toss-up for which I want to choose next I'll be looking to the survey results to help me decide!💖

Ahh ty for this! It always bugged me how the older translation out there messed up the perspective of the chorus (it's so obviously Hazuk singing to her mother, not the other way around?!). I think Doremi-Fansubs got it right for their V2, but of course that's in a less accessible place than Animelyrics lol, plus they only did the little bit of it that was in Sharp 38 anyways. It's so good to have an accurate translation of the full song out there! Such a haunting song. (also omg I just looked at your song survey - I'm so happy you're including "Himawari"! I know it's not actually a Doremi song, but at this point I feel like it's kind of an honorary one lol, we've adopted it.) edit: Also this is gonna sound oddly specific, but thanks for actually keeping "mama" (as in, mother) as "mama", lol. For some reason a lot of translators have this bizarre aversion to that word and I've never really understood why.

I saw a comment on another KZread upload of this song that was like "this is a song about listening to your mother for she is wise" and I was like ?????? no it is very much not?????????? and that was the moment that I decided this would be the song for Hazuki's birthday lol. Himawari is one of my absolute favorites! It was included with all the rest of the songs on the website where I'd get my Ojamajo MP3s back 20+ years ago, so it was aaaaages before I realized that it isn't _technically_ an Ojamajo song, but by that point it was so ingrained in my consciousness as part of the fandom's song library that I refuse to let go haha. As for "mama," I have to admit that I didn't really think too hard about that haha. There are other songs where I've localized "mama" and "papa" to "mom" and "dad" (Mahou de Choi^2 immediately comes to mind) simply because I feel that's more culturally fitting, but it's true that Ojamajo has always been quite deliberate with the girls' individual terms of address for their parents, going all the way back to Doremi and Hazuki clarifying how they call their parents in episode 2. (Not sure if there were ever updated subs for that episode that accurately translated the scene? I haven't watched fansubs in well over a decade because I don't need them, and the inaccuracies are just distracting, but I remember that none of the groups that ever translated that episode seemed to realize what that conversation was about...)

@@OwaranaiMonogatari haha WHAT?? oh man did they even watch the show.. the wrong TL always drove me nuts cause like... yes it can be difficult to determine stuff like who's being addressed etc just from lyrics... but Hazuki's entire character arc etc should provide enough context to clarify it, lol. The eps they use it in make the intent of the song very clear! I mean I dunno, give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe the person that mistranslated it originally wasn't a fan of the show and didn't have that context or something, but... geez! haha yesss I'm the same way with Himawari!! it's soooo good and I'm more than happy to consider it an honorary Doremi song :B I think there is at least one correct sub out there for that scene, yeah. I definitely remember the intent of it coming across clearly, anyway.

To be honest I don't really like Hazuki's speaking voice... but she sings like an angel. 💖 Which is a shame cause think the problem is she sounds unnaturally high-pitched like she's constantly talking in "falsetto." But when she sings, it's in a more natural register sounds more authentically cute and gentle.
