Mimi Casteel & Abby Rose - Regenerative Viticulture Series

This session is a conversation between Abby Rose, co-founder & CEO of Vidacycle, and Mimi Casteel, vineyard manager & winemaker at Hopewell Wine in Oregon. Mimi grew up working in the vineyard and winery of her parents, Bethel Heights Vineyard in Oregon. After graduating from university, she worked in forests, which led her to study forest science and then on to work as a botanist and ecologist for the US Forest Service. She returned to Bethel Heights in 2005 where she worked for ten years, before leaving to create Hope Well, where she works to create beautifully regenerative, biodiverse & resilient ecosystems with the vines.
The Regenerative Viticulture Series are a series of conversations hosted by Vidacycle in collaboration with the Regenerative Viticulture Foundation, with the aim of sharing the latest experimental thinking in building diversity, resilience & soil health on vineyard land.
Vidacycle is the creator of simple tools for farmers & vineyards, supporting the use of observation to support regenerative practices. Sectormentor is the regenerative viticulture app by Vidacycle.
The Regenerative Viticulture Foundation are a global non-profit organisation bringing together producers, scientists, educators, agricultural advisors and environmental organisations to share learnings and build up the data and resources required to enable viticulturists to make the transition from conventional or organic to a more biodiverse viticulture.

Certainly some great information here, Mimi's a great person. Maybe a debate... bad choice of words, conversation along with someone who didn't come from a family that already owned vineyards or some other productive farm and whom had to "build" their own operation with $$ they saved without an investor would be incredibly interesting. There are many of us that love the idea of regenerative farming but simply can't see it making financial since. I've been apart of many certification, and the one thing they all have in common is not allowing $$ (profit or not) into the conversation. Ultimately, if you can't pay the bills and don't have a wealthy uncle or trust fund, you wont be farming long.
