Milwaukee PACKOUT Shop Storage

Milwaukee Packout Work Shop Storage
Packout Cabinet link: www.acmetools.com/milwaukee-p...
The PACKOUT shop Storage mounting plates have 14 different mounting hole locations and 4 labeled for mounting 16-inches on-center for a typical wall stud mounting application.
The issue that we found with these brackets is that the 30-inch size of the mounting plate does not allow for a continuous mating of plates horizontally across a wall with using just studs as anchor points.
In order to work well with all the existing PACKOUT products and their tabbed indexing system, nominal width of 10″ for the small plates and 30″ for the large plates was decided on.
Unfortunately, these are not multiples of the standard 16″ stud placement and it’s not possible to index the plates next to each other as intended AND find studs that line up with the mounting holes. If joined consecutively the plate will only hit a wall stud every 4th or 5 th mounting plate, and even then its will not be multiple fastening holes per stud.
To mount this system securely, we recommend using one of the three best-practice methods described
1. Install Blocking
2. Install horizontal wall strapping
3. Install plywood backer board
Using the PACKOUT Shop Storage system
We’ve had the PACKOUT Shop Storage system mounted and functional in one of our garage workshops for a few weeks at the time of this review.
We mounted multiple large plates and a few small plates on a wall of several 4×8 sheets of plywood.
The best thing about the PACKOUT Shop Storage system is it completely customizable and can be reorganized at any time.
In the first few weeks of use, we have reorganized our wall numerous times to optimize the efficiency of our space.
We have some favorites out of the 20 PACKOUT items
The first is the PACKOUT Cabinet.
Perhaps the most versatile item of the bunch, the cabinet features mounting tabs on the back for mounting to the wall as well as stacking tabs on the bottom and top.
This allows the cabinet to be quickly taken off the wall and added to a traditional PACKOUT stack.
A large garage-style door on the front allows for easy access to the inside. Place a few of the cabinets in a row on your wall and they serve as a great shelf.
Another item that we think the folks at Milwaukee hit a home run with is the Tool Station.
The tool station features two quick access tool slots primarily designed to securely hold a pistol grip style tool like drills or impact drivers.
We found the tolerances and the design of the spacings on the slots to be a sweet spot that can accept narrower tools like M12 Installation Drill/Driver as well as the much larger 1/2 Impact Drivers.
The Tool Station does not appear to be designed for a vehicle-mounted system as the tools could easily slide out of the holders in a moving vehicle.
Milwaukee has come out with new versions of their PACKOUT storage bins to take advantage of the wall mount system.
The new bins are the same small and large size bins found in the PACKOUT organizer boxes but have modified tabs on one side.
These tabs allow the bins to be mounted to wall plates or even other vertically mounted PACKOUT organizers.
We aren’t too sure how often this feature will be used but found it to be an insightful upgrade to the system.
One item that immediately caught our eye is the PACKOUT Roll Holder.
A wall-mounted roll holder is a great addition to any shop for paper towels or a roll of shop rags.
A simple hinged top with a pushbutton release allows for easy access and quick changing of rolls.
We even placed a stack of various tape rolls for quick access.
The PACKOUT battery racks come in two different varieties, the M12 and the M18 version. Each rack takes us a single row of mounting slots and can hold 4 batteries.
Unsurprisingly the mounts are well designed with tight tolerances like their battery connections on the tools and each type indexes in with an audible click.
The M12 Battery Rack has plenty of room and can accept both the CP Compact and XC Extended Capacity style batteries.
The M18 Battery Rack can accept [4] M18 Batteries of any size.
While designed to live on the wall mounts, we couldn’t help but place a few on our mobile PACKOUT boxes! They fit but don’t lock.
Room for Improvement
The Long Handle Tool rack is designed to hold outdoor power equipment, long-handled tools, and more.
The rack features three vertical spaces with locking cams to secure the handles in place.
While the locking cams work great at holding the tool in place, we found the tolerances on the cams were designed for relatively narrow tools, likely the metal rod commonly found on Milwaukee OPE tools.
Most of the items we had lying around like our brooms and brushes would not fit in the rubber grips.
We’d love to see future versions of the holder accept larger or thicker gauge material.

this is a great version 1. i don't see the point in a workshop only situation. its just an expensive French cleat . where i see the future benefits is in the van and trailer set ups. when you can have your tools in these holders and can unclip the holder from the wall and clip it onto a cart or trolley to create a mini work space that you can Tailor to the job at hand

They finally are popping up in Home depot! Kinda pricy but the modular option is nice cause you are not locked into one thing. Changing your workshop as you get more equipment is key to have an efficient workflow. I really like this system and will definitely get some pieces to try it out. I already have a packout i use for work so mounting some of it on the wall would be sweet!

Looks infinitely smarter than the worthless Festool Systainers. I used to have a wall full of Systainers and sold them all. They are terrible quality for the money - usually not closing properly and damaging the lip when you try to close them with something heavy in them because the whole box will twist. But the real piss-off is that every single time you need something you have to unstack the whole stack, and since I store tools in them they were heavy. Always wondered why they didn't have large drawer systainers that could fit a saw, or like this system where you have a cover that comes down. Plus wall mounting is genius.

I like and own some Packout cases. However the major issue I have with them is that while they work together quite well, Milwaukee appears to have not put a lot of thought into how to make them work with their tools: None of their tools are sold in Packout cases. There are no pre-cut inserts made to fit the tools nor even suggestions on how to fit tools into them. When they do show their tools in the cases it’s a bit haphazard and as well fitted as tossing everything loosely into a milk crate. While the Festool Tanos Systainers are not as durable as the Packout, their tools are sold in the Systainers and make incredibly efficient use of the space inside them.

They don’t wanna tetris it so that you’re more inclined to “I need more boxes because I can’t fit them all in this one, guess I’ll go buy another”. It would be nice if they gave you all tools in some kind of packout case. I have dewalt but I’m so inclined to change over. I like organizing, but not a fan of crazy amounts of storage boxes with empty space. I might change over slowly when I begin to modify my trailer.

@@jackjmaheriii That’s actually my problem with Makita is that they use the 1850 cell batteries never upgraded to 2170 and now have pretty much bailed on everyone that has invested so much into the 18 V platform. Instead of coming out with better technology for the existing 18 V platform they’re moving to 40 V. I know they say they’re still going to support the 18 V platform but ultimately it’s just not sustainable. There is way too much competition in the tool industry right now and that’s like competing with yourself. Honestly Makita is one of my favorite tool companies. But in my opinion and it’s just an opinion Milwaukee has become the dominant force in the 18/20 V market.

Good video. The system looks impressive, but I'm torn. I like my tools organized... but I'm not a contractor. This would go in my garage and would be reasonably handy when working in the garage or driveway. But I don't want to be walking back to the garage every time I decide I need a new bit, blade, or tool for a project in the house. So I'd end up loading up some sort of box or tray with everything I thought I'd need for the task and carrying it in with me. It's so much handier to have spare blades and bits on hand or to have a wrench a size up or down from your original guess. If you have all that in a box, do you really need it on the wall? Maybe a section of this for things I know I'd only be using in the garage. Or to hold boxes that contained the tools and accessories so I could grab my drill box or my multitool box when needed. I just don't know. Because I also don't like tossing tools into generic boxes.

11:54 -- It's a huge miss that Milwaukee did not make those wall plates compatible with 16" on center walls. But that problem could be solved if Milwaukee makes static spacers to join wall plates so that the wall plates on now 16" on center. The static spaces would just clip in between two wall plates and hopefully line up the holes of the wall plates with where the wall studs should be.

I use a wall-mount bookcase-like over-bench cabinet using a french cleat with the bottom shelf being a comb-type style with 13 slots (in 48" width) and the second shelf having a series of Milwaukee battery charges. In a bigger shop now, I'm making a second similar cabinet to hold some non-Milwuakee tools and chargers. I have 28 or so Milwaukee battery tools. Not all of them will fit in a slot of course (chainsaw, light tower, etc.) but many will. It doesn't look as cool as what you're showing there, but it looks plenty cool enough and cost about a sheet of plywood, most of it repurposed.

Nice design but this would make it too easy for someone to just walk into my garage and take my expensive tools. I'll have to pass on this one

Stuff is great but WAY WAY WAY OVERPRICED!!!!!!!! $50.00 to hang two a drill and an impact, oh ya and that’s not counting another $20.00 for back plate!!!!! REDICULOUS!!!! I’ll come up with something else. The price for the tools and batteries is bad enough. Dam it’s just plastic for Christ sakes!
