Milling with the 62cc Chinese Chainsaw

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Decided to make a small chainsaw mill and try out the Yozhoukee chainsaw in it. The lil 62cc bugger did pretty good.
Milling starts around 11:20 in the video before that is just the making of the mill. Oh and I did paint it hence the thumbnail for the video.
The saw can be found at my affiliate link. rover.ebay.com/rover/1/711-53...

The best way I have found to keep it from pivoting on the bar and still keep the end open is to add a key that locks onto the bar nut bolts. Just as a side note for ya.

Maybe grind some grooves or cross hatches in the plates that clamp on the bar? It will mark up the center of the bar a little, but might keep it from slipping. Your welds look fine. It's flux core- it is what it is. Lol

You might want to add another bit of tubing half way between the middle one and the chainsaw to keep it level on the narrower logs at the start and end of the cut. I was also going to suggest drilling a couple of holes in the bar and add locating pins to the bracket that clamps onto the bar.

  • @DocJaeBass

Two fixes. The first is with the saw as is with the existing bar and chain. Make a second clamp with the same basic design as the primary clamp but that can bolt to the frame. Drill several holes in the mill frame so you can move the second clamp in or out depending on the size of wood you are cutting. Yes, you'll lose a couple inches as you approach the end of the bar, but you'll gain a lot in stability. If you exceed the capacity for this fix, see the second option. The second is to maximize the use of the mill. Weld a second clamp on the end cross beam of your frame. Exchange the bar with a bar long enough to extend past the end clamp and the end bearing so the chain will run free.

  • @DIYwithUncleCy

    @DIYwithUncleCy

The whole idea is to NOT have a bar at the end so that a 20 inch bar can mill a log 38 inches wide by cutting from each side and meeting the cuts in the middle. Both of your suggestions negate that a possibility.

That's not a bad idea. I would have to make it with a slotted hole like the Bar itself so it would fit other saws but that is doable. The idea of this rig has become that I can test the ripping capabilities of any of my saws (I have 11 currently LOL)

Jerry Stott: That is an option, but then you loose about 2-3 inches more of cutting width. He could put a guide pin on his existing clamp and put a mating hole in the bar to prevent the pivoting tendencies. The hole would only have to go through the first layer of bar, not all the way through.

Better clamp? Make the top of the T out of solid or much thicker wall tube. Add some very hard steel preferably with a bit of grip surface. A bit of a file or rasp. Use bigger bolts. Use fine pitch nuts as they squeeze harder for a given torque. Double nut to keep the nuts from backing off from vibration.

The idea is to be able to cut a log that is wider than the blade buy cutting from one end then turn around and cut from the other. If there is a bolt out there it would not do that. The answer was to make a piece that bolted onto the bar nuts that attached to the mill and kept it from twisting.

It's a handy device if you just need a few boards. But, a lot of people are buying and making Alaskan saw mills and investing in cheap band saw mills. (Sometimes darned expensive ones) They get the idea that they can make money selling slabs even though its an immensely slow process to cut them. What's your general plan? Is it just a hobby? Is it cost effective? Is there much demand for slab wood or is it just a passing fad?

  • @DIYwithUncleCy

I have a Bandsaw mill. I got the big chainsaw to cut slabs from a log that is too big for slicing on the bandsaw mil. I do sell the lumber I cut on the mill have had it for just over 2 years and it is approaching the break even point now. I don't advertise or anything just sell to people that know me, perhaps if I did I would do better. I have a whole barn for drying lumber 1 inch goes up for sale after six months air drying, slabs of course must sit longer a year or more. But I am in no rush, I'm a transplanted country boy living in the city I let the city dwellers get in a hurry, I don't.

The same way you clamped it to the bar close to the motor, do the same as far out to the end of the bar.

Uncle Cy, does your muffler glow red hot? I have a 40cc chinese saw and if I cut a log with the bar buried, it starts to burn the wood. I set some moss on an old log on fire in the middle of the forest while cutting blow downs on a trail. Not good.

No I have not had that problem. I have it tuned to faster RPMs now too, 12300.

I do have a tack. Never thought to check it's top end rpm. It's just funny that when you hit full throttle, you can watch the muffler turn cherry red at the spark arrestor.

IMO your clamp jig needs to be made of thicker steel with a piece cut from an old file welded to each side as to hold the bar like a bench vise. It will mar the surface but you won't need to drill holes in the bar or make another clamp jig for the end of the bar. Just my 2¢. Happy milling!

How is your welding machine possible without welding rod. For me, all electric welding I've know need a rod. Except gas welding
