This actually seems like a logical character arc following her version of Wednesday. I'll see it. It's a common theme but these actors should be able to put a great spin on it.

Ok so, I don't understand why people in this comment section going wild and crazy like bro... It's just a movie. The student keeps coming after the teacher willingly but the teacher keeps rejecting her.. It's the STUDENT wants the TEACHER, not the teacher wants the student.. I know it's bad but this is like a " Based on a true story " film because that kind of crazy stuff happen between teachers and students in real life but these kind of movies aren't advising you to "go hook up with the teacher" right? Movies like this telling you the danger of that if there are unwanted relationships or feelings between teachers and students, it can ruin the entire lives of the both teacher and student. But you (the teacher) can still fix the problem if you stand straight as the adult and you have the responsibility.

Dramatic much? Everyone in the film is adult aged both in reality and in character. It might be creepy but it's legal. And the people making it are telling a story that happens everyday somewhere but because of today's sensitive people getting up set by EVERYTHING these kind of stories are rarely told.

I am familiar with the lyrics, and if not for the Nabokov reference I'd agree with you. Humbert wasn't just accused.

No... Lolita was 12. Ortega's character is 18. This at least given the trailer is a relatively standard uni student seduces professor thriller. The only real question is if the sister/friend she lives with is real or not.

This looks VERY interesting.

Okay..."...yields complex results..." and they say the movie has complex themes. If you watch the trailer it seems clear that he likes her but doesn't pursue more than a proud professor/mentor role. She picks up on his interest, she is or becomes interested in him and tries to initiate a physical or maybe even romantic relationship that he turns down and then she has him in a bind because she can say something happened and ruin him if she chooses and who would doubt her? I think the studio is using the phrase 'complex themes' to try to handle people blasting the movie for showing a young woman making a false claim against an authority figure. It happens, but I think the studio's legal department shit a brick like, "In today's world you're going to have the girl claiming something happened be lying?!? WTF?!?" If the movie is done just right, not too far one way or another, it's still going to be divisive and discussed (argued) about at length. Freeman and Ortega are both great and both adored by various fanbases. I hope they pull it off because, even though (sadly) it might spawn shlocky exploitative knock offs, a success with what appears to be SUCH a loaded issue could mean an easier time for studios to approve other films that get people talking AND put butts in seats. Fingers crossed.

You're not far off. The script for the film is out there, (I've read it) and it has been widely praised on the blacklist, theres been a great deal of interest in it for some time. It was originally intended as stage play but that the author adapted it into a screenplay. The complexity comes from both Miller and Cairo. Miller is a conflicted character a failed writer, living in a not so super happy marriage who becomes friends with this new gifted student, but what starts as mere academic interest in this young students almost savant level gifts, begins to turn into lustful desire. It's not helped by the fact that Cairo is actively seducing him be it for genuine interest or a game shes playing with him. Either way its for personal gain. Miller ultimately rejects her but by the time he does he's dug himself into a hole he cant get out of. Millers side of the story is an examination of inappropriate thinking by teachers towards their students and the line that should never be crossed. The idea that this happens is unsettling to most but it DOES happen. Cairo to be clear is actually the villian of this story and not just metaphorically I mean literally. Shes manipulative, scheming, vindictive and self absorbed. She sets it upon herself to ruin Miller not only because he rejects her but mostly because he dares threaten to fail her for the pornographic story she turns in to him. It's a film that if handled correctly and is top quality could be up for several awards. It will undoubtedly get people talking but thats part of the point.

These kind of films rarely capture big box office numbers, its not even getting a wide release. Films like these tend to do better on the awards circuit. That said it does benefit from a couple things 1 is the star power of its leads. People will watch this movie simple because Jenna Ortega is in it. And 2 the subject matter is the kind of thing that people yell and scream about but go and watch because they have a morbid curiosity. In the end I think it has a good chance of doing well for the type of film it is. Sometimes the best kind of advertising is little bit of controversy.
