It's not only what I knit when travelling ( small simple items: hat, cowl, socks, sophie's scarf etc) it's what I knit with- and JFM Making Tracks is my absolute go to for enduring the rigors of travel. It is unarguably the most comforting, rewarding yarn to have in your hands and before your eyes when you're on the road or in the air. The springy, squishy, firmness and lovely graded colors of M.T. are my favorite antidote to the wearying atmosphere of airports, coach class, layovers, flight delays etc. In the midst of travel ickiness my fingers and eyes are content and pleased thanks to Making Tracks, the yarn that travels well.

Oh Amanda you are so courageous with the sweater surgery!!! I always gift them away when they don't fit and I am such a lazy knitter....I love the new colors and the cowgirl blues, especially sage and steely blue..... I want to knit Ona's new cardigan so badly,,,,,still thinking about the colorwork colors.....Thank you for doing the mill cast solo! My favorite projects to knit while traveling are socks or something that I leave in Italy (where i usually travel to visit my family)

Oh, and travel knitting - since I just flew across the country to rescue my mom who needs more care, here is what I need: something small and simple enough to knit while waiting in lines, a chart-based lace or cable something to keep my brain busy on the plane, and something more interesting but fun to knit when I have free time. I also consider the size/"warmth" of the project - this trip I brought a brioche project that is lovely to work on while mom watches jeopardy, but it was just too hot on the plane that sat in 106 degrees in Las Vegas for several hours before we boarded...I also knit as I am falling asleep, which is ideally stockingette st and/or garter =)

Amanda, you did a great job on the Millcast and Cody’s sweater! When I travel I like to take small, mindless projects on a circular needle. On a recent trip to NYC I took my Clementine Cowl which is knit in a simple slip stitch pattern. Socks are another small portable project but sometimes fiddling with sharp DPNs isn’t the best, or safest while on a plane or riding in a car.

So enjoyed your podcast today you did very well amanda. I am sure we will need a whole podcast on Peggy's vacation 😊. The sleeve on the sweater turned out nicely. Its funny how you know when you don't like it it just bugs you to no end I did that with 2 sweaters didn't like the length after they were done and shortened them after. The yarn is lovely from cowgirl yarns and the shawl is so pretty. Cant wait for the kal 😊

Thanks for sharing the video on how you modified!! I usually take socks and something that requires more brain space. Socks are my go to and mindless knitting and don’t take up a lot of space if you’re on a plane or want something to easy to pick up and put down, but it’s also nice to have a more complicated project for when you have downtime. Curious to hear about everyone else’s.

I am headed off on a 5 week road trip with my family, so of course I have been agonizing for weeks about which projects to bring! The key for me is to have multiple projects so that at least one is always at a simple mindless stage. Also, nothing super bulky because it just takes up too much space. Here’s what I have settled on: 1. I have just the body left to knit on a summer tee, so lots of mindless stockinette. 2. I have another summer tee ready to cast on - merino and mohair stripes, so it is light and compact, but may be too fuzzy to work with, except in the air conditioning of the car, but there will be many hours of that. 3. A couple skeins of yarn for socks, so that I have a smaller project to stuff in my bag when out & about. Of course this is WAY too much. But I would hate to be without a project. One day I hope to visit JFM and squish some of your beautiful yarn in person.

Great job with the cuff! Here’s a curious thought for the bottom hem. What if at each side, you made a tuck on the inside and seamed it? You could even keep the ribbing aligned. There would be a little extra fabric bump but I bet it could be fairly inconspicuous, and you won’t have pulled any knitting out. So, if you don’t like it, you could just take it out. Then, no messing with the button band. Thanks for sharing all of the mill updates, Amanda, and welcome back, Peg!

Amanda, Cody's sweater is gorgeous and well worth your fix, which looks terrific! Thanks for showing us how you did it. I think blocking the bottom ribbing could easily lessen the slight flare; I've done that by just squinching (a technical knitting term) the rib area on the blocking mats. And, in the photo of you modeling that beautiful shawl, I kept wondering how you keep the deer out of those beds of veggies???

  • @junctionfibermill

You could try redoing the shawl collar bindoff to make it tighter. For the hem, i *think* if you do a kitchener close to the bottom, you can essentially add tightness

Your sleeve modifications look really amazing but, I can see that the hem is a lot more complex with the combined shawl collar/buttonband. What I would do is to buy some black elastic thread and hand sew it into the hem of the garment, on the inside. I wouldn't pull it too tight and it might require 2-4 rows of the elastic thread.
